Chapter 5 - The Name Behind the Prison Sentence

Thomas Reed survived.

Barely.

Police found him unconscious in his Arizona rental home after someone forced entry through the rear door.

His laptop was gone.

His phone remained.

That mistake changed everything.

Investigators recovered deleted messages connecting him to Evelyn Price.

And to Celeste Blackwood.

Mariana sat in Rachel's office when the first recovered exchange appeared.

CELESTE: She cannot remain near Daniel.

THOMAS: Removing her from the company is easy.

CELESTE: I need permanence.

Mariana stared at the word.

Permanence.

Eighteen months in prison.

Five years branded a felon.

Lucas growing up watching her count coins at grocery stores.

Permanence.

Adrian read silently beside her.

His face was rigid.

"I need to know whether my mother ordered the theft."

Rachel shook her head.

"The messages don't prove that."

Another recovered text appeared.

THOMAS: The transfer solves both problems.

CELESTE: I don't want details.

THOMAS: That's why you pay me.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Mariana felt no triumph.

Only exhaustion.

Celeste had built a system where she never needed to say the ugliest part aloud.

Other people understood.

Other people acted.

She paid.

Mariana suffered.

Thomas regained consciousness the following morning.

This time police protected the room.

He asked for a lawyer.

Then he asked for Mariana.

Rachel advised against meeting him.

Mariana insisted.

She needed to hear it.

Thomas looked smaller in a hospital bed.

Five years earlier, he had worn expensive suits and spoken confidently to jurors.

Now bruises covered his face.

He couldn't look at her.

"I'm sorry."

Mariana sat across from him.

"No."

He looked up.

"You don't get to start there."

Thomas swallowed.

"What do you want?"

"The truth."

He began.

Celeste had approached him after learning Mariana was pregnant.

At first, the plan was simple.

Fire Mariana.

Destroy her professional reputation.

Make employment difficult.

Then Daniel resisted his family's marriage arrangement.

He told Thomas he intended to leave Hawthorne and build a life with Mariana.

Celeste panicked.

Thomas had already been stealing from the company.

Small amounts.

Hidden through layered accounts.

He saw an opportunity.

He transferred $2.8 million and made Mariana the apparent culprit.

Celeste didn't design the theft.

But once Thomas explained what he'd done, she paid Evelyn Price to support the story.

"Why?" Mariana asked.

Thomas stared at his hands.

"Because you going to prison solved her problem."

Adrian stood near the door.

His jaw tightened.

Mariana asked, "What about Daniel?"

"The accident happened before your arrest."

"Accident?"

Thomas hesitated.

Adrian noticed.

"What?"

Thomas looked toward him.

"It wasn't supposed to happen."

The room went still.

"What wasn't?"

"Daniel found out about the transfer."

Mariana felt cold.

"He confronted you."

"Yes."

"He knew I was being framed?"

"Not yet. He knew money was missing."

Thomas's breathing quickened.

"He said he was going to Adrian."

Adrian stepped forward.

"And?"

"I followed him."

Mariana whispered, "You caused the crash."

Thomas began crying.

"I wanted to stop him."

"How?"

"I tried to force his car to pull over."

Adrian lunged.

Rachel blocked him.

Thomas recoiled.

"The road was wet. He lost control."

"You killed my brother."

"No. He survived."

"You caused the injuries that killed him."

Thomas covered his face.

"I'm sorry."

Adrian turned away.

Mariana stared at Thomas.

"Did Celeste know?"

"Not before."

"After?"

"Yes."

"And she protected you?"

Thomas nodded.

"Why?"

"Because if I went down, everything about you came out."

There it was.

Daniel's life traded for a family secret.

Mariana stood.

She couldn't hear more.

Then Thomas said, "There's a recording."

She stopped.

"What?"

"Daniel recorded me."

Adrian turned back.

"When?"

"At the rehabilitation facility."

"How?"

"He called me."

Thomas's voice shook.

"He remembered. Not everything, but enough. He tricked me into admitting the transfer."

"Where is it?"

"I don't know."

"You said there was an original file."

"Daniel mailed it."

"To Adrian?"

Thomas nodded.

"But Celeste intercepted the package."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Where did she put it?"

"I don't know."

Mariana remembered the bank key.

The empty box.

"Was it in Evelyn's safe-deposit box?"

"No."

"Then where?"

Thomas hesitated.

"Daniel had another copy."

"Where?"

"Blackwood Mansion."

Adrian stared.

"My house?"

"Daniel hid it before he went to Switzerland."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

Thomas swallowed.

"But he told me the clue."

Mariana leaned forward.

"What clue?"

Thomas looked directly at Adrian.

"Where we learned not to be afraid of the dark."

Adrian went completely still.

He left the hospital without another word.

Mariana followed.

"What does it mean?"

He got into the car.

"The attic."

They reached Blackwood Mansion forty minutes later.

Adrian ignored everyone and climbed three flights.

Mariana followed.

At the end of the upper corridor was a narrow staircase.

The attic smelled of cedar and old books.

Adrian walked toward two antique wooden trunks.

"When Daniel and I were kids, storms scared him."

He knelt.

"We used to hide here with flashlights."

He moved the first trunk.

Nothing.

The second.

Nothing.

Then he looked at the floor.

One board was darker.

He pried it up.

Underneath sat a metal box.

Mariana's heart hammered.

Adrian opened it.

A digital recorder.

Documents.

A sealed letter.

And a tiny knitted baby sock.

Mariana covered her mouth.

She recognized it.

She had given Daniel a pair after telling him she was pregnant.

He had kept one.

Adrian picked up the recorder.

Pressed play.

Static.

Then Daniel's voice.

Weak.

But unmistakable.

"Thomas, I know Mariana didn't steal the money."

Mariana began crying.

The recording continued.

Thomas admitted everything.

The theft.

The falsified access logs.

Evelyn's testimony.

Celeste's payment.

Then Daniel asked a final question.

"Does my mother know Mariana kept the baby?"

Thomas answered.

"Yes."

Mariana closed her eyes.

The recording ended.

Adrian sat on the attic floor.

For a long time neither spoke.

Then he handed Mariana the sealed letter.

Her name was written on it.

She opened it.

Daniel's final words were simpler than the earlier letter.

He told her he loved her.

He told her he believed her.

He told her that if their child lived, he wanted that child to know his father had tried to come home.

Mariana pressed the letter to her chest.

Years of anger dissolved into grief.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

Grief.

Below them, a door slammed.

Adrian stood.

Footsteps rushed up the stairs.

Rachel appeared.

"Police are here."

"For the evidence?"

"No."

Her expression was grave.

"They're looking for Celeste."

Adrian frowned.

"She's with her attorney."

"Not anymore."

"What happened?"

"She disappeared."

Mariana stood.

Rachel held up her phone.

"Before she vanished, she withdrew three million dollars."

Adrian's face tightened.

Then Mariana's phone buzzed.

A text.

Unknown number.

She opened it.

There was a photograph.

Lucas.

Sitting in the mansion kitchen.

Taken minutes earlier.

Below it were four words.
