Chapter 6 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The first thing my mother did was look at Adrian.
Not me.
Not the gun behind her.
Him.
And that was when I understood something worse than all the secrets I had discovered.
My mother knew Adrian.
"Put the weapon down."
Adrian's voice was calm.
Too calm.
The kind of calm that meant he was already calculating every possible outcome.
The person behind my mother stepped forward.
I expected a stranger.
A threat.
Someone I had never seen before.
But when the figure moved into the light, my entire body froze.
Because I knew him.
Not personally.
But from the photographs.
From the documents.
From the stories Adrian's family tried to bury.
"Impossible."
Victor whispered the word.
Luca stopped breathing.
And Adrian looked like he had just seen a ghost.
Because standing in front of us was the man everyone believed had died fifteen years ago.
Daniel Carter.
My father.
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
My mind rejected what my eyes were seeing.
For fifteen years, I had carried the same memory.
My father leaving.
My mother crying.
The empty chair at the dinner table.
The unanswered questions.
The birthdays where I waited for a phone call that never came.
The nights I wondered if he ever missed me.
And now...
He was standing five feet away from me.
Older.
Different.
But still him.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same scar above his eyebrow that I remembered from when I was a child.
"Dad?"
The word barely escaped my mouth.
His face changed.
For one second, he wasn't the mysterious man holding a weapon.
He was just my father.
The man who used to carry me on his shoulders.
The man who taught me how to ride a bicycle.
The man who disappeared.
Then the moment passed.
And the walls returned.
"Miranda."
His voice cracked.
Hearing my name from him hurt more than I expected.
Because I had spent years imagining this moment.
But never like this.
Never with a gun.
Never surrounded by strangers.
Never with a thousand unanswered questions between us.
My mother stepped forward.
"Daniel, please."
He looked at her.
Pain crossed his face.
"You brought her here."
My mother shook her head.
"No."
She looked at me.
"I came because I knew she was in danger."
I stared at both of them.
"You both lied to me."
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
I laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
"Fifteen years."
My voice shook.
"Fifteen years I thought you were gone."
My father lowered the weapon.
Only slightly.
"I was trying to protect you."
"From what?"
He looked at Adrian.
And that was when my anger returned.
"Don't."
I stepped between them.
"Don't look at him like he's the reason."
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew.
I deserved the truth.
"Tell me everything."
My father looked older than he had seconds ago.
"I can't."
My chest tightened.
"After everything?"
"Miranda."
"No."
I shook my head.
"I am done being protected by lies."
The room went silent.
Even Adrian looked away.
Because he knew I was right.
My father slowly lowered the weapon completely.
"Your mother and I never abandoned you."
I swallowed.
"Then why?"
"Because someone wanted you gone."
The words chilled me.
"Who?"
My father looked at the folder on the table.
"The same person who wanted Adrian dead."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Who?"
Daniel looked at him.
For a moment, the two men stared at each other.
Two people connected by a past I never knew existed.
Then my father said:
"Your father."
Adrian froze.
"My father?"
Daniel nodded.
"No."
Luca shook his head.
"That's impossible."
"Is it?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Do you really believe everything your family told you?"
Nobody answered.
Because everyone was tired of being lied to.
My father walked toward the table.
He picked up the old folder.
"The evidence was never against Adrian."
He opened it.
"The evidence was to find the person controlling everything behind him."
I looked at the papers.
"What are you saying?"
Daniel looked at me.
"I'm saying Adrian was never the enemy."
My eyes moved toward Adrian.
He looked just as shocked.
"Then why did you write evidence against him?"
My father sighed.
"Because I needed someone to believe Adrian was the target."
I frowned.
"What?"
"I knew someone was watching."
He looked around the apartment.
"The moment they believed I was investigating Adrian, they stopped looking at the real person."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Who?"
My father didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Adrian.
"You never told her about the night you found the account."
Adrian's face changed.
"What account?"
I looked between them.
"Adrian?"
He stayed silent.
My father continued.
"The financial records."
Victor suddenly stepped forward.
"Daniel."
"No."
My father looked at him.
"She deserves the truth."
Victor looked defeated.
Adrian's voice was low.
"What records?"
My father answered:
"The records proving someone inside the Moretti family was selling information to Julian Hayes."
The name hit me.
Julian.
Even now.
After everything.
His shadow was still there.
"Julian?"
My father nodded.
"He wasn't just your ex-husband."
My hands became cold.
"He was investigating the Moretti family."
Adrian looked confused.
"Why?"
"Because he wanted control."
My father placed the papers down.
"Julian discovered secrets about your family. Instead of exposing them, he decided to use them."
I remembered his smile.
His confidence.
His certainty that he always won.
Everything suddenly looked different.
"He knew about Adrian."
"Yes."
"He knew about me."
"Yes."
My father's voice became softer.
"And he knew about our connection."
The room went silent.
"What connection?"
My father looked at me.
"Miranda..."
Then he stopped.
Like saying the words was dangerous.
"What?"
He looked toward the window.
"Your mother wasn't hiding from the Morettis."
My heart raced.
"Then who was she hiding from?"
My father looked directly at me.
"The man who created this entire war."
Before anyone could ask another question, every phone in the room vibrated at the same time.
Mine.
Adrian's.
Luca's.
Victor's.
My father's.
Everyone looked down.
A message.
Same sender.
No number.
No name.
Just a black screen.
I opened mine.
There was a picture.
My blood turned cold.
It was taken inside my apartment.
Minutes earlier.
While we were all standing there.
The person who sent it had been watching us.
Below the picture were four words.
"Look behind your father."
I slowly lifted my eyes.
Everyone noticed.
Adrian immediately turned.
My father looked confused.
Then the apartment lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
And from the dark hallway behind him...
A familiar voice whispered:
"Daniel Carter."
May you like
My father froze.
Because the person standing in the shadows was the one man he thought he had escaped from fifteen years ago.
