Chapter 3 - The Woman Hidden in the Envelope

The first thing I heard after the lights went out was Adrian whispering:
"Stay behind me."
Then the apartment door unlocked itself.
I froze.
Not because someone was trying to break in.
Because someone had already opened the lock.
Someone who knew the code.
Someone who should never have been able to enter.
Adrian moved quickly.
The calm man I knew disappeared.
In his place was someone trained to survive.
Someone who had spent his entire life surrounded by danger.
"Miranda, take the envelope."
His voice was quiet.
But there was no hesitation.
I grabbed the black envelope from the table.
My hands were shaking.
Not because I was afraid of the person outside.
Because I was finally realizing something.
The life I thought I had escaped from with Julian...
Was nothing compared to what I had walked into.
The door opened slowly.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
His eyes immediately found Adrian.
Not me.
"You're late."
Adrian's expression changed.
"How did you get in?"
The man ignored the question.
His eyes moved toward me.
Then toward the envelope in my hand.
And suddenly, his face changed.
"You opened it?"
I looked down.
"I didn't."
The man exhaled.
Almost relieved.
"Good."
Adrian stepped between us.
"Who are you?"
The man's expression hardened.
"You know exactly who I am."
A long silence followed.
Then Adrian whispered:
"Victor."
The man's eyes narrowed.
"I see you still remember."
I looked at Adrian.
"You know him?"
Adrian didn't answer.
That scared me more than anything.
Because Adrian always answered me.
Even when the truth was painful.
Even when it was complicated.
But this time...
He looked afraid.
Victor looked at me.
"Miranda, you need to leave."
I stared at him.
"Excuse me?"
"You don't understand what you're involved in."
I almost laughed.
Everyone kept saying that.
Julian.
Adrian.
Now this stranger.
Apparently, everyone knew something about my life except me.
"I think I've heard that enough."
Victor studied me.
"You really don't know."
"Know what?"
He looked at Adrian.
Then back at me.
"Why his father wrote your name."
The room became silent.
I felt Adrian tense.
"Victor."
But the older man continued.
"Five years ago, before Adrian's father disappeared, he spent months investigating one person."
I swallowed.
"Who?"
Victor didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
"You."
The word hit harder than I expected.
I looked at Adrian.
"No."
His voice was immediate.
"Miranda, listen to me."
But I stepped away.
"Your father was investigating me?"
"I didn't know."
"How could you not know?"
"Because he hid everything from everyone."
I wanted to believe him.
I did.
But the questions were growing faster than the answers.
Victor walked toward the table.
"Your divorce from Julian Hayes was not random."
My eyes narrowed.
"What does Julian have to do with this?"
Victor looked at Adrian.
And that look told me everything.
Something connected them.
Something Adrian hadn't told me.
"Julian was never just a billionaire businessman."
I laughed quietly.
"Of course."
The pieces were becoming impossible.
"Everyone has secrets."
Victor looked serious.
"Julian Hayes built his fortune by buying companies that were connected to powerful people."
"So?"
"Some of those people were connected to the Moretti family."
The room felt smaller.
"You think Julian knew about your family?"
Adrian finally spoke.
"We think he knew more than he admitted."
I looked at him.
"And you married me knowing this?"
His face changed.
"No."
The answer came too fast.
"I married you because I loved you."
I looked away.
Because that was the hardest part.
I believed him.
That was why it hurt.
Victor reached into his coat and removed a small photograph.
He placed it on the table.
"Your father-in-law found this."
I picked it up.
And my heart stopped.
The picture showed a young woman.
Me.
But younger.
Before Julian.
Before the marriage.
Before I knew Adrian existed.
I stared at it.
"Where did he get this?"
Victor's expression became darker.
"That's the question."
I turned the photo over.
There was writing on the back.
A date.
And three words.
"Protect her always."
My fingers went numb.
"Who wrote this?"
Nobody answered.
I looked at Adrian.
His face told me he already knew.
"Adrian."
He closed his eyes.
"Miranda..."
"Who wrote it?"
Finally, he said:
"My father."
The apartment felt completely silent.
I sat down.
Because my knees suddenly didn't feel strong enough to hold me.
"My father died when I was young."
Adrian looked confused.
"What?"
I looked at the photograph.
"My father disappeared from my life when I was eight."
Victor became still.
"Your father?"
I nodded.
"He wasn't dead."
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood the same thing at the same moment.
There was another missing person.
Another secret.
Another connection.
Adrian slowly approached.
"Miranda, what was your father's name?"
I looked at him.
"Daniel Carter."
Victor's face changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
"That's impossible."
"What?"
He stepped backward.
"Daniel Carter was the man who helped my father build the first foundation of the Moretti empire."
I stared at him.
"No."
"My father trusted him."
I shook my head.
"My father was a mechanic."
Victor looked at me.
"That was the story you were given."
The words destroyed something inside me.
Because suddenly, my entire childhood felt like a lie.
The father I remembered.
The quiet man.
The man who disappeared.
The man my mother refused to discuss.
Maybe I never knew him at all.
My phone suddenly vibrated.
Everyone looked at it.
Unknown number.
Again.
Adrian reached for it.
"Don't answer."
But it was already ringing.
I picked it up.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a voice.
A woman's voice.
Older.
Shaking.
"Miranda?"
My blood froze.
Because I knew that voice.
Even after years.
Even after everything.
"Mom?"
Adrian looked at me.
Victor stepped closer.
The voice continued.
"Listen carefully. You cannot trust the Moretti family."
I couldn't breathe.
"Where are you?"
A pause.
Then:
"I've been hiding from them for fifteen years."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Mom, that's impossible."
"No."
Her voice cracked.
"It was the only way to keep you alive."
Adrian looked alarmed.
"Miranda, hang up."
But I couldn't.
Because my mother whispered one final sentence.
A sentence that changed everything.
"The man you married is not the only Moretti who knows your name."
The call ended.
At that exact moment, the apartment television turned on by itself.
Static filled the screen.
Then a video appeared.
A man sat in a dark room.
Older.
Gray hair.
A scar across his face.
Adrian stopped breathing.
Because he recognized him.
"My father."
The man on the screen looked directly into the camera.
Then he spoke.
"Miranda Carter."
The screen flickered.
"Before you trust Adrian..."
A pause.
"He needs to tell you what he did the night your father disappeared."
The video stopped.
And Adrian's phone immediately received a message.
One sentence.
May you like
One name.
"Ask him about Daniel Carter."
