Chapter 6 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The photograph stayed on Daniel's phone screen.

He couldn't move.

He couldn't breathe.

Because the person standing beside his mother wasn't a stranger.

It was impossible.

The man in the picture was Michael Torres.

Maria's father.

The man everyone said disappeared thirty years ago.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

Daniel zoomed in.

The image was old.

The quality was poor.

But the face was clear.

Older.

Different.

Yet unmistakable.

Michael Torres was alive.

And he was standing beside Elizabeth Hale after the day everyone claimed she died.

Daniel looked at Maria.

She was already crying.

"You knew."

Maria shook her head.

"Not this."

Daniel held up the phone.

"Then explain this."

Maria looked at the picture.

"I thought he was gone."

"Everyone thought he was gone."

Daniel's voice became colder.

"But someone took this picture."

Maria nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"Who?"

She didn't answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Maria."

Her eyes met his.

"The person who took this picture was the reason my father disappeared."

Daniel felt the room shift.

Everything was connected.

Every secret.

Every lie.

Every missing piece.

But one question kept returning.

Why now?

Why reveal everything after thirty years?

Why show Daniel the truth only after he became powerful enough to protect himself?

He looked at the basement.

At the hidden documents.

At the photographs.

At the secrets his father buried.

"Your father knew Michael was alive."

Maria looked away.

"Yes."

Daniel froze.

"How?"

"Because Charles was the one who helped him disappear."

The answer hit him harder than expected.

His father.

The man who taught him that emotions were weakness.

The man who built an empire on control.

Had secretly protected the person who knew the truth.

"Why?"

Maria swallowed.

"Because Michael knew something Charles couldn't allow anyone else to know."

Daniel waited.

"What?"

Maria whispered:

"Your mother didn't die because Charles wanted her gone."

Daniel stared.

"What does that mean?"

Maria looked at him.

"Your mother chose to disappear."

Silence.

Daniel felt like the entire world stopped.

"No."

The word came out quietly.

"My mother died."

Maria shook her head.

"Daniel..."

"No."

He stepped back.

"Everyone saw the accident."

Maria's eyes filled with sadness.

"Everyone saw what they were supposed to see."

Daniel looked away.

For years, he had carried one pain.

The pain of losing his mother.

But this was different.

If she didn't die...

Then she left him.

The thought hurt more than he wanted to admit.

A child didn't care about reasons.

A child only knew one thing.

Someone he loved disappeared.

"Why would she leave me?"

Maria's voice softened.

"Because she believed staying would put you in danger."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Danger?"

He looked around the mansion.

"My father raised me here."

Maria stayed silent.

Daniel continued.

"He taught me how to run companies. How to negotiate. How to win."

His voice lowered.

"But he never taught me how to love."

Maria looked at him.

"Because he was afraid."

Daniel looked at her.

"Afraid of what?"

"That you would become like him."

Those words stayed between them.

Because Daniel had wondered the same thing.

How much of Charles Hale lived inside him?

The ambition.

The coldness.

The inability to trust.

The walls.

A sound came from upstairs.

A small voice.

"Mr. Hale?"

Daniel immediately looked up.

"Lily."

He ran upstairs.

Lily stood in the hallway holding another piece of paper.

Her face looked worried.

"What happened?"

She handed it to him.

"I found it."

Daniel unfolded the paper.

Another message.

His mother's handwriting.

This time, only one sentence.

"Daniel, if you found Michael, you are closer than I thought."

Daniel stared.

Closer to what?

He turned the paper over.

Nothing.

Then Lily pointed toward the old hidden room.

"There was another one."

Daniel looked at her.

"Another what?"

"A door."

Maria arrived behind him.

Her face changed.

"What door?"

Lily pointed inside.

"The little door."

Daniel walked back into the hidden room.

He searched the walls.

At first, he saw nothing.

Then he noticed something.

A small line behind one of the old shelves.

A hidden entrance.

His father had hidden an entire room.

And now Daniel had found another one.

He moved the shelf.

Behind it was a narrow wooden door.

No handle.

No lock.

Only a small symbol carved into the center.

The same symbol from the old documents.

Daniel touched it.

The door clicked.

It opened.

Inside was a small room.

Not a basement.

Not a storage area.

A place someone had lived.

There was a chair.

A table.

A lamp.

And on the table...

A journal.

Daniel walked closer.

The cover was worn.

But the name written on it made him stop.

Elizabeth Hale.

His mother's journal.

His hands shook as he opened it.

The first page contained a date.

Three days before her supposed death.

Daniel read the first line.

"My dearest Daniel, if you ever find this, then Charles failed to keep you away from the truth."

Daniel stopped.

His father failed.

Not succeeded.

Failed.

He continued.

"I need you to understand something. I did not leave because I stopped loving you."

Daniel's vision blurred.

The words became harder to read.

"I left because someone inside our family wanted you gone."

Daniel froze.

Someone inside our family.

Not his father.

Someone else.

He turned the page.

The next entry was shorter.

More urgent.

"Michael knows the name."

Daniel's heartbeat increased.

"The person who betrayed me is someone Daniel trusts."

He stopped.

Someone Daniel trusts.

Not trusted.

Trusts.

Present tense.

Meaning the person was still in his life.

Still close.

Still watching.

Daniel flipped through pages faster.

Most were missing.

Someone had torn them out.

Only one final sentence remained.

"If Daniel finds this journal, tell him not to trust..."

The rest was gone.

The page had been ripped away.

Daniel stared at the empty space.

Not trust who?

His father?

A friend?

A business partner?

Someone in his home?

Someone near Lily?

A noise came from outside the hidden room.

Daniel turned.

Maria was standing at the doorway.

But her expression had changed.

She looked terrified.

"What?"

She pointed toward the hallway.

Daniel listened.

Footsteps.

Someone was walking through the mansion.

Slowly.

Confidently.

Like they belonged there.

Maria whispered:

"Daniel..."

He looked at her.

"Who is it?"

Maria didn't answer.

Because she recognized the footsteps.

And then a voice came from the hallway.

A voice Daniel had spent his entire life trying to forget.

"Daniel."

His blood turned cold.

Because he knew that voice.

It was the same voice from his childhood.

The same voice that told him to stop crying.

The same voice that buried every secret.

Charles Hale.

Daniel stepped out of the hidden room.

The hallway was empty.

Then the figure appeared at the end of the corridor.

Older.

Different.

But alive.

The man smiled.

May you like

And said:

"Your mother was right. You finally found me."
