Chapter 6 - The Daughter Who Returned From The Shadows

"Elizabeth is alive."
The words stayed in the room.
Nobody reacted.
Not immediately.
Because sometimes the truth was too impossible for the human mind to accept.
My mother.
Alive.
The woman I had buried in my heart years ago.
The woman whose voice I could barely remember anymore.
The woman who had left behind only questions.
She was alive.
I stared at Adrian.
"Say that again."
His hand slowly lowered from the phone.
"I don't know how."
"Say it again."
His eyes moved to Lucia.
Then back to me.
"The person who called said your mother is alive."
My knees almost gave out.
Daniel moved quickly and pulled a chair toward me.
I sat down.
Lucia climbed onto my lap.
"Mommy?"
I wrapped my arms around her.
"It's okay."
But my voice broke.
She noticed.
Children always noticed.
"Are you sad?"
I looked at her.
How could I explain that the person I missed most in the world might have been alive all this time?
How could I explain that every birthday without my mother.
Every holiday without her.
Every night I cried quietly so Lucia wouldn't hear.
Might have been built on a lie.
Daniel stood near the window.
His face was full of regret.
"You deserve to know everything."
I looked at him.
"Then tell me."
He nodded.
"Your mother didn't die."
I waited.
"She disappeared because she wanted people to believe she was gone."
"Why?"
"Because of Lucia."
My arms tightened around my daughter.
Daniel continued.
"When Elizabeth found out she was pregnant, she knew the Vale family would try to control the situation."
"Control?"
He looked at Adrian.
"Your grandfather believed the family name mattered more than anything."
Adrian looked away.
"He wanted the child hidden."
My anger rose.
"Hidden from who?"
Daniel hesitated.
"From everyone."
The answer made no sense.
"Why?"
Daniel looked at Lucia.
"Because Lucia carried something your grandfather feared."
I frowned.
"What?"
"Proof."
"Proof of what?"
Nobody answered.
That silence made me stand.
"I am tired of secrets."
My voice echoed through the room.
"I have spent six years protecting my daughter from a world that never cared about us. I worked every job I could. I skipped meals. I stayed awake when she was sick. I did everything alone."
I looked at Adrian.
"And now I find out she is connected to one of the most powerful families in the country?"
Then Daniel.
"And her father disappeared."
Then the room.
"And my mother may have been alive this entire time."
My eyes filled.
"I don't want another secret."
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian quietly said:
"You're right."
I looked at him.
He walked toward the table.
For the first time, he didn't look like a billionaire.
He looked like a brother who lost his family.
"We should have told you everything."
I almost laughed.
"Yes."
He nodded.
"You should have."
A long silence followed.
Then Adrian reached into his jacket.
He removed a small black folder.
"I found this in the Vale archives before they were broken into."
Daniel immediately looked concerned.
"What is that?"
Adrian opened it.
Inside were old documents.
Photographs.
Medical records.
And one file with my mother's name.
Elizabeth Vale.
I stopped breathing.
Adrian handed it to me.
"I never knew this existed."
I opened the folder.
The first page was a birth certificate.
Not mine.
Lucia's.
My hands shook.
Because beside her name was a note.
A handwritten note.
From my mother.
I read it silently.
If anyone finds this, protect my daughter.
Not the family name.
Not the company.
My daughter.
I touched the paper.
My vision blurred.
Then I saw the next line.
She must never know what happened to her father.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
"Daniel."
He closed his eyes.
"I wasn't allowed to tell you."
"By who?"
He didn't speak.
"By who?"
Finally, he whispered:
"By Elizabeth."
That hurt more than I expected.
"She didn't trust me?"
Daniel looked at me.
"No."
His voice softened.
"She was protecting you from what would happen if you knew."
I shook my head.
"I deserve the truth."
Daniel nodded.
"You do."
He reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small key.
A simple metal key.
"What is that?"
"The key to Elizabeth's final message."
My heart stopped.
"Final?"
Daniel looked down.
"Before she disappeared, she left something behind."
"Where?"
He looked toward Adrian.
"Somewhere your family could never reach."
Adrian immediately understood.
"The old Vale estate."
Daniel nodded.
The room became tense.
"The estate was abandoned after the scandal."
"What scandal?"
Adrian looked at me.
"The official story was that my brother died in an accident."
He paused.
"But the truth was different."
My stomach tightened.
"What happened?"
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Daniel answered.
"I was attacked."
Silence.
"Someone wanted me gone."
"Who?"
Daniel looked at the floor.
"I never saw his face."
"Then how do you know?"
"Because he said one thing before he left."
The room went quiet.
"What?"
Daniel looked at Lucia.
"He said the Vale bloodline would end with my child."
I felt cold.
A six-year-old girl.
My daughter.
Someone had wanted her erased before she was even born.
Adrian immediately grabbed his phone.
"I'm calling security."
Daniel stopped him.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because if they know we're going there, they'll get there first."
I looked at both men.
"Where are we going?"
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian said:
"The old Vale estate."
I looked at Lucia.
"No."
Everyone looked at me.
"I'm not taking my daughter into another dangerous situation."
Daniel nodded.
"I understand."
But Adrian stepped closer.
"Clara."
I looked at him.
"Your mother left something there."
"What?"
"The truth."
I hated that he was right.
Because after everything.
After all the lies.
All the years stolen from me.
I needed answers.
Not for the Vale family.
Not for Adrian.
For Lucia.
Because she deserved to know why people wanted to take away the only life she had ever known.
An hour later, we left the gala.
The city lights passed outside the car window.
Lucia slept beside me.
Her head rested on my shoulder.
For the first time that night, she looked peaceful.
I watched her sleeping face.
And I promised myself something.
No matter what the Vale family had hidden.
No matter who wanted her.
Nobody would take my daughter from me.
When we arrived at the old estate, the gates were already open.
That was the first sign something was wrong.
Adrian stopped the car.
Nobody spoke.
The mansion stood in darkness.
Waiting.
Daniel looked at the building.
"Someone has been here."
I felt my heart race.
"How do you know?"
He pointed.
The front door.
It was slightly open.
Adrian reached for the handle.
Then stopped.
Because from inside the house came a sound.
A woman's voice.
Soft.
Familiar.
Singing the same melody Lucia had danced to.
Daniel whispered:
"No..."
I stepped closer.
The voice continued.
And then the person inside spoke my name.
"Clara..."
The door opened wider.
May you like
And standing in the darkness was the woman I had spent years believing was gone.
My mother.
