Chapter 4 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The elevator doors opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because the man standing inside wasn't supposed to exist.
He looked older than the photographs from the past.
His hair was darker in some places and gray in others.
His face carried years of pain.
But his eyes were exactly the same.
The same eyes I had seen every day when I looked at Lucia.
My fingers tightened around the letter.
I couldn't breathe.
Adrian stood frozen beside me.
"Daniel."
The man's expression changed when he heard his name.
Not surprise.
Not fear.
Something worse.
Regret.
He stepped out of the elevator.
Every movement was careful.
Like he wasn't sure whether he belonged in this world anymore.
Lucia looked at him.
Then she looked at me.
"Mommy?"
I immediately stepped in front of her.
Protecting her was automatic.
No matter who this man was.
No matter what anyone claimed.
He stopped several feet away.
His eyes moved to Lucia.
And the second he saw her, his entire face collapsed.
Not dramatically.
Not like the movies.
Just a quiet kind of pain.
The kind people showed when they saw something they had spent years believing they would never see again.
"She's older than I imagined."
His voice was rough.
I stared at him.
"You know her?"
Daniel looked at me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he whispered:
"I knew her before she was born."
My heart started racing.
"No."
The word came out before I could stop it.
Adrian stepped forward.
"Daniel, you need to explain."
Daniel looked at his younger brother.
A strange emotion passed between them.
Anger.
Pain.
Love.
All at once.
"You still think you deserve the truth?"
Adrian's face tightened.
"I spent twenty years believing you were dead."
Daniel looked away.
"I know."
"Do you?"
Adrian's voice became sharper.
"Do you know what happened after you disappeared?"
Daniel didn't answer.
"Do you know what happened to our family?"
Silence.
I stood there watching two brothers who looked like they had lost decades of their lives.
But I didn't care about their past.
I cared about my daughter.
I cared about the secrets surrounding her.
"Someone needs to explain why my child is connected to all of this."
Both men looked at me.
And Daniel finally said:
"Because Lucia is my daughter."
The hallway disappeared.
Everything stopped.
I stared at him.
No.
My mind refused to accept it.
"You don't get to say that."
My voice shook.
"You don't get to walk into my life after six years and call yourself her father."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I know."
"Where were you?"
He closed his eyes.
A painful silence followed.
"Trying to keep her alive."
The answer made me angry.
"Alive?"
I laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
"I raised her alone."
"I know."
"You missed her first steps."
"I know."
"You missed every birthday."
"I know."
His voice cracked.
"And I remember every one of them."
That made me stop.
Because people who were lying usually defended themselves.
They usually had excuses.
Daniel looked like a man carrying a punishment he had chosen.
Adrian looked at him.
"What happened twenty years ago?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Lucia.
"Can I speak to her?"
"No."
My answer was instant.
Daniel nodded.
"I expected that."
He looked at the necklace around Lucia's neck.
"The pendant."
My body became tense.
"What about it?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Your mother gave it to her."
I looked down.
"My mother gave it to me."
"Yes."
"She never mentioned you."
"Because she was protecting you."
I hated hearing those words.
Everyone kept saying them.
Protecting me.
Protecting Lucia.
Protecting secrets.
But nobody asked what it felt like to be the person left behind.
"What was she protecting me from?"
Daniel looked at Adrian.
Then at the empty hallway behind us.
"We shouldn't talk here."
Adrian nodded.
For the first time, I saw something unexpected.
He trusted Daniel.
Even after everything.
That scared me more than anything.
We moved into a private room near the ballroom.
A small sitting area reserved for important guests.
I sat with Lucia beside me.
Adrian stood near the window.
Daniel remained across from us.
Like he didn't deserve to come closer.
The silence was unbearable.
Finally, I spoke.
"Start from the beginning."
Daniel nodded.
"Your mother and I met when we were young."
I waited.
"Her real name wasn't Elizabeth Bennett."
My hands tightened.
"What was it?"
He looked at me.
"Elizabeth Vale."
The name felt impossible.
My mother's entire life suddenly had another identity.
"She was Adrian's sister."
I looked at Adrian.
He looked down.
"She wasn't supposed to leave the family."
Daniel continued.
"But she did."
"Why?"
His jaw tightened.
"Because she discovered what the Vale family was hiding."
The room became quiet.
"What were they hiding?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he reached into his jacket.
He pulled out an old envelope.
Another one.
Another secret.
"I kept this because I promised your mother I would only give it to Lucia when she was old enough."
I stared at him.
"She's six."
"I know."
"Then why now?"
Daniel looked at Adrian.
"Because someone already found her."
My blood ran cold.
"What does that mean?"
Before Daniel could answer, Adrian's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Nobody heard the voice on the other end.
But Adrian's face said enough.
He walked away from the window.
"Are you sure?"
A pause.
Then:
"When?"
Another pause.
His hand tightened around the phone.
"No. Keep them away from the house."
I stood.
"Who was that?"
Adrian didn't answer.
"Who was that?"
He looked at me.
And for the first time since I met him, I saw genuine fear.
"Security."
"Why?"
His eyes moved to Lucia.
"Because someone broke into my family archives."
Daniel immediately stood.
"No."
Adrian looked at him.
"They found the records."
Daniel's face went pale.
"What records?"
"The ones about Elizabeth."
The room went silent.
I looked between them.
"What records?"
Neither answered.
I stepped forward.
"What records?"
Adrian finally spoke.
"The records proving Lucia's identity."
My stomach dropped.
"What identity?"
Daniel moved toward me.
"Clara."
"No."
I shook my head.
"I want the truth."
Daniel looked devastated.
Then he said:
"The truth is that Lucia wasn't the only child someone tried to erase."
I felt my blood turn cold.
"What does that mean?"
Before he could answer, the lights in the private room flickered.
Everyone stopped.
Adrian looked toward the hallway.
A security alarm began ringing somewhere inside the building.
Daniel whispered something that made Adrian immediately reach for his phone.
"What?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Someone knows she's here."
A loud sound came from outside the room.
A heavy impact.
Then silence.
Adrian moved toward the door.
"Stay here."
He reached for the handle.
But before he opened it, a small piece of paper slid underneath the door.
Nobody moved.
Adrian picked it up.
He read the message.
His face changed.
Then he slowly turned the paper around.
Only four words were written on it.
Four words that made Daniel step backward.
May you like
Because they were written in Elizabeth Vale's handwriting.
"I know where Lucia is."
