Chapter 5 - The Secret Hidden Beneath The Vale Name

The message was still in Adrian’s hand.
Four words.
Four words written in my mother’s handwriting.
I know where Lucia is.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.
Someone who was supposed to be gone had just reached across twenty years of silence.
I stared at the paper.
My mother’s handwriting.
The same handwriting I remembered from birthday cards.
From notes she left beside my breakfast before school.
From the small letters she wrote when she wanted me to know she loved me.
But my mother had been dead for years.
Or at least, that was what I believed.
"Clara."
Daniel’s voice pulled me back.
I looked at him.
His face had lost all color.
"You recognize it."
It wasn't a question.
I nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Adrian looked between us.
"How?"
I didn't answer.
Because I didn't know how to explain the feeling of seeing a piece of your childhood appear in the middle of a nightmare.
A handwriting that belonged to someone you buried.
A message that shouldn't exist.
A secret that should have stayed buried.
Lucia held my hand.
"Mommy, who wrote that?"
I looked down at my daughter.
The hardest thing about being a parent was pretending the world was safe when it wasn't.
"It's okay, sweetheart."
But even I didn't believe my own words.
Daniel took a step closer.
"Adrian."
His brother looked at him.
"We need to leave."
Adrian shook his head.
"Not until I know who entered the building."
Daniel looked at the note.
"They don't want to hurt us."
His voice was quiet.
"They want Lucia."
My body immediately reacted.
I pulled Lucia behind me.
"No one is taking my daughter."
Daniel looked at me.
"I know."
"Do you?"
The anger came faster than I expected.
"You disappear for six years. Your family hides secrets from me. A stranger sends a message saying she knows where my child is. And now everyone is telling me they understand?"
The room went silent.
I realized I was shaking.
But I didn't care.
Because everyone else had spent years making decisions about my life without asking me.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"You have every right to hate me."
"I don't hate you."
The words surprised him.
"I don't know you."
That hurt him more.
And somehow, that hurt me too.
Adrian walked toward the door.
"I need my security team."
He opened his phone.
"No."
Daniel stopped him.
Adrian looked back.
"What?"
"If they find out Lucia is with us, they'll know exactly where she is."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"That's already happening."
Daniel looked at the message.
"No."
He shook his head.
"Not yet."
I looked at him.
"What are you talking about?"
Daniel took a deep breath.
"Your mother didn't just run away from the Vale family."
He paused.
"She ran from someone inside it."
The room became quiet again.
"Who?"
Daniel looked at Adrian.
And for a moment, Adrian looked like he already knew.
"My father."
The words shocked me.
"Your father?"
Daniel nodded.
"The former head of the Vale family."
Adrian looked away.
"My father died years ago."
Daniel's eyes stayed on him.
"That's what everyone was told."
Nobody spoke.
Because the impossible had become normal in the last few hours.
People who were dead were appearing.
Names that were forgotten were returning.
Truths that had been hidden were breaking through.
I looked at Adrian.
"What did your father do?"
He didn't answer.
Daniel did.
"He discovered Elizabeth was pregnant."
I froze.
"And?"
"He believed the child would destroy everything he built."
My eyes moved to Lucia.
My daughter.
Daniel continued.
"He spent years controlling the family. The company. The reputation. Everything."
"And my mother?"
Daniel swallowed.
"She tried to protect you."
I shook my head.
"From him?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't she tell me?"
Daniel looked devastated.
"Because she thought telling you would put you in danger."
I laughed quietly.
But there was no happiness in it.
"So instead she left me with nothing?"
"She left you alive."
The sentence hit harder than I expected.
I looked away.
Because a small part of me understood.
A small part of me hated that I understood.
Adrian walked toward the table.
He placed his hands on it.
"I spent my entire life believing my sister abandoned us."
Daniel looked at him.
"She didn't."
"Then why didn't she come back?"
Daniel didn't answer.
That silence was enough.
Something terrible had happened.
Something nobody wanted to say.
"What happened to her?"
Daniel looked at me.
"She disappeared."
I felt my chest tighten.
"Like you?"
He nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Daniel looked at the note again.
"Because someone wanted both of them gone."
A sudden sound interrupted us.
A loud crash came from the hallway.
Lucia jumped.
I held her.
Adrian immediately moved toward the door.
"Stay here."
This time, nobody argued.
He opened the door slightly.
The hallway was empty.
Too empty.
The security lights flickered.
Then Adrian noticed something on the floor.
A photograph.
He picked it up.
His face changed.
"Adrian?"
I saw his hands tighten around it.
"What is it?"
He didn't answer.
Daniel walked closer.
Then he saw the picture.
And he stopped.
Because it showed three people.
My mother.
Daniel.
And a baby.
But there was something written on the back.
A date.
A hospital name.
And one sentence.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My mother's handwriting.
Daniel whispered:
"She knew."
"What?"
He turned the photo over.
The message was clear.
Lucia was never supposed to belong to the Vale family.
I felt cold.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
Again.
He answered.
At first, he listened.
Then his expression changed.
His eyes moved slowly toward Lucia.
"Who is this?"
Silence.
Then Adrian's face went completely pale.
Because the person on the other end said something only one person could have known.
Something that proved the impossible.
Adrian lowered the phone.
May you like
And whispered:
"Elizabeth is alive."
