Chapter 6 - The Basement That Held My Father's Truth

The basement door was already open.
Someone had been waiting inside.
I stared at the picture on my phone.
The old Blackwood mansion.
The basement entrance.
The door slightly open.
My father's message was still on the screen.
"Come to the basement alone."
My hands were shaking.
Not because I was afraid of the dark.
Not because I was afraid of what might be waiting there.
I was afraid because for the first time in twenty years, I felt like my father was close.
Close enough to answer every question I had buried.
Close enough to explain why he left.
Close enough to tell me why my mother lied.
"Emily."
Adrian's voice pulled me back.
I looked at him.
He was watching me carefully.
"You can't go there."
I laughed quietly.
A tired, broken laugh.
"You said that before."
"And I was right."
I looked down at the photograph.
"My father wants me to find something."
Adrian shook his head.
"Or someone wants you to think that."
The words made me stop.
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying your father knew how people worked."
Adrian looked toward the window.
"He knew how to leave clues. He knew how to make people follow a path."
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"You make him sound like a criminal."
Adrian's eyes met mine.
"No."
His voice softened.
"I make him sound like a man who knew he was being hunted."
I didn't know what to believe anymore.
Every person in my life had given me a different version of the truth.
My mother gave me one.
Adrian gave me another.
And somewhere between them was the person who had spent twenty years hiding from me.
My father.
"I need to go."
Adrian immediately shook his head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because if that message came from him, he would never ask you to come alone."
I looked at him.
"What if he did?"
Adrian went silent.
That silence bothered me.
Because it meant he had considered that possibility.
Victoria stepped closer.
"Mr. Blackwood."
Adrian looked at her.
"We need to leave."
Victoria frowned.
"Leave?"
He nodded.
"The people who sent that message know Emily has the evidence."
I looked at him.
"What evidence?"
Adrian stared at me.
"The thing your father hid."
My heart started beating faster.
"The thing he put with me."
I thought about my childhood.
The wooden box.
The one my mother told me never to open.
The one I had forgotten about.
"I know where it is."
Adrian looked surprised.
"Where?"
"At my apartment."
His expression changed immediately.
"Then we go there first."
I shook my head.
"No."
"Emily."
"If someone is watching my apartment, they already know where I live."
I held up the phone.
"They sent me a picture."
Adrian's face became serious.
"They're not trying to hide anymore."
"No."
I looked toward the basement door.
"They want me to come."
Nobody spoke.
Because we all knew what that meant.
Someone had planned this.
Someone wanted me to find the truth.
The only question was why.
Twenty minutes later, I stood outside the basement entrance.
Adrian was behind me.
Victoria stayed upstairs with security.
I knew Adrian didn't want me there.
But he also knew he couldn't stop me.
The basement door looked ordinary.
Old wood.
Rusty handle.
Nothing special.
But my entire life had led me to this door.
I reached for the handle.
Before I touched it, Adrian spoke.
"Emily."
I looked back.
"If something happens..."
I waited.
He looked like he wanted to say something more.
Something personal.
Instead, he simply said:
"Trust your instincts."
I nodded.
Then I opened the door.
The air inside was cold.
The basement was darker than I expected.
I stepped down slowly.
Each footstep echoed.
The walls were covered with old shelves.
Boxes.
Documents.
Things nobody had touched in years.
Then I saw it.
A small wooden table in the center of the room.
On top of it was a box.
My box.
The same one my mother gave me when I was a child.
I stopped breathing.
"How..."
Adrian came closer.
He looked at the box.
"I've never seen that before."
I walked toward it slowly.
My fingers touched the wood.
There was a small carving on the top.
A symbol.
The same symbol on Adrian's chest.
My father's warning.
My mother's secret.
Everything was connected.
I opened the box.
Inside was a small recorder.
Several photographs.
And a letter.
My name was written on the front.
Emily.
My hands shook as I opened it.
The letter was short.
Only a few lines.
"If you found this, then they failed to stop you."
"But before you listen to the recording, remember this..."
"The person who betrayed me was not the person you think."
I looked at Adrian.
Neither of us spoke.
I picked up the recorder.
There was one audio file.
No title.
Only a date.
The night my father disappeared.
I pressed play.
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then a voice.
My father's voice.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
"Emily..."
My eyes filled with tears.
"If you're hearing this, I'm sorry."
I covered my mouth.
I had spent years imagining what I would say if I ever saw him again.
I never imagined I would hear him like this.
"I need you to know the truth."
The recording continued.
"Your mother did not betray me."
I looked at Adrian.
He froze.
The next words changed everything.
"She was trying to protect you."
My heart stopped.
"But the person who destroyed our family..."
The recording became quieter.
Like my father was afraid someone would hear him.
"...was someone we trusted more than anyone."
A loud noise suddenly came from upstairs.
A crash.
Adrian immediately turned.
"What was that?"
Then the basement lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
And went out.
Complete darkness.
I heard Adrian moving.
"Emily, stay where you are."
I held the recorder tightly.
Then I heard something else.
A sound from the far corner of the basement.
A slow breath.
Someone was there.
Someone who had been hiding.
Adrian whispered:
"That's impossible."
I couldn't see his face.
"Who is it?"
No answer.
Then a small light turned on.
A phone screen.
May you like
A figure stepped forward.
And the person holding the phone was someone I thought had disappeared twenty years ago...
