Chapter 3 - The Man Behind the Disappearance

A man stood outside the mansion gate, staring into the security camera: "Emily..."

When Adrian Blackwood saw the stranger's face, he grabbed the wheelchair controls and moved toward the monitor.

The name written in the old photograph suddenly appeared alive.

My father was standing outside.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't even understand what I was seeing.

For twenty years, I had carried one painful memory.

My father leaving.

The empty chair at the dinner table.

My mother's silence.

The neighbors whispering.

The police report saying there was no evidence.

The day everyone told me I needed to accept that he was gone.

But now he was standing outside Adrian Blackwood's mansion.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

But alive.

"That isn't possible."

The words left my mouth before I realized I had spoken.

Adrian didn't answer.

He stared at the security screen like he was looking at a ghost.

Victoria stood behind us, completely frozen.

"You know him," I whispered.

Adrian's hands tightened around the wheelchair controls.

"Emily..."

"No."

My voice became louder.

"You don't get to say my name like you understand what I'm feeling."

I pointed at the monitor.

"That man is my father."

Adrian closed his eyes.

For a second, he looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had spent years waiting for this exact moment.

"I thought he was dead."

I looked at him.

"You thought?"

Adrian slowly turned toward me.

"Your father wanted everyone to believe that."

The room went silent.

"What does that mean?"

Before Adrian could answer, the security alarm suddenly sounded.

Victoria looked at her phone.

"Someone cut the outer camera feed."

Adrian's expression changed instantly.

"Lock every door."

Victoria didn't move.

"Mr. Blackwood..."

"Now."

The authority in his voice made her immediately obey.

I stared at him.

"Why are you afraid?"

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw the man behind the billionaire.

Not the businessman.

Not the powerful person from magazines.

Just a man who had been hiding from something for years.

"Because your father never came back for no reason."

My heart pounded.

"What happened between you two?"

Adrian looked toward the security monitor again.

The image had disappeared.

The screen was black.

"He saved my life."

I frowned.

"Then why would my father leave?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he moved toward his desk and unlocked the cabinet I had noticed earlier.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Photos.

Files.

Evidence.

He removed one folder.

The name on it made my stomach twist.

Thomas Carter.

My father's name.

I stepped closer.

"You kept a file on him?"

Adrian nodded.

"I kept everything."

"Why?"

He looked at the folder.

"Because I knew one day you would come looking for answers."

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

"You expected me?"

"No."

His eyes met mine.

"I hoped you would never have to."

He opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

My father.

Adrian.

Another man I didn't recognize.

They were standing beside a warehouse.

The date on the photograph was twenty-one years earlier.

Before my father disappeared.

I picked up another photo.

My hands shook.

There was my father holding something.

A small black device.

The same type of memory card I had found hidden in Adrian's belongings.

"What is this?"

Adrian looked at the photo.

"That was the reason your father disappeared."

"What was on it?"

He hesitated.

"A list."

"Of what?"

Adrian looked at me.

"People."

I waited.

But he didn't continue.

"People who were involved in illegal operations."

My breathing slowed.

"My father was investigating something?"

Adrian nodded.

"He discovered a network that reached higher than anyone imagined."

"Who was behind it?"

Adrian's face became serious.

"Someone you trusted."

I felt a chill.

"Who?"

Before he could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The mansion fell into darkness.

I heard Victoria gasp.

Then came the sound of glass breaking downstairs.

Someone was inside.

Adrian immediately moved closer to me.

"Stay behind me."

I almost laughed.

"You're in a wheelchair."

His eyes stayed focused on the hallway.

"And you still need protection."

The confidence in his voice scared me more than the darkness.

Because Adrian wasn't guessing.

He knew exactly what kind of danger was coming.

A few seconds passed.

Then footsteps echoed through the mansion.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone wasn't trying to hide.

They wanted us to know they were there.

Victoria whispered:

"How did they get past security?"

Adrian didn't answer.

He looked at me.

"Emily, whatever happens, don't let them take that photograph."

I looked down.

The photograph was still in my hand.

"Why?"

His voice dropped.

"Because your father left it for you."

The footsteps stopped outside the office door.

Everyone became silent.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

Then a voice came from the other side.

A voice I hadn't heard in twenty years.

Older.

Rougher.

But impossible to forget.

"Emily."

My knees almost gave out.

Adrian looked at me.

The fear in his eyes confirmed what I already knew.

The person outside wasn't a stranger.

The door handle slowly turned.

May you like

And my father's voice whispered:

"Open the door, sweetheart."
