Chapter 4 - The Photograph That Changed Everything

The man standing outside my office door did not move.

Neither did I.

For several seconds, we stared at each other through the narrow opening.

The hallway lights flickered behind him.

His face remained hidden in the shadows.

But I knew that voice.

I had heard it before.

Not recently.

Not in eighteen months.

But every day before that.

"Adrian..."

My grip tightened around the gun.

"Who are you?"

The man slowly stepped forward.

The light touched his face.

And my entire body went cold.

It wasn't Julian.

It was Richard Hale.

My father's former business partner.

The man who disappeared after my father's death.

The man Julian had been investigating before he vanished.

The man who should have been thousands of miles away.

Richard looked older than I remembered.

His hair was gray.

His face was thinner.

But his eyes were the same.

Calm.

Cold.

Calculating.

He raised both hands slowly.

"I'm not here to hurt you."

I almost laughed.

"You're standing outside my locked office after my security system went dark."

I lifted the gun slightly.

"Forgive me if I don't believe you."

Richard looked past me.

His eyes stopped on Lily.

For the first time, his expression changed.

Not fear.

Not surprise.

Something closer to guilt.

"You found her."

Clara immediately stepped between Richard and the baby.

"You stay away from her."

Richard looked at Clara.

"You still protected him."

Clara's face tightened.

"Protected who?"

Richard didn't answer.

That was enough.

Because I already knew.

Julian.

I stepped closer.

"You know about Lily."

Richard looked at me.

"I know more than you realize."

"Then start talking."

He glanced toward the hallway.

"We don't have much time."

I didn't move.

"You have exactly one chance."

Richard looked at the gun in my hand.

Then at my face.

"Your brother wasn't killed in that accident."

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because I had already heard them.

But hearing them from another person made them real.

I felt my chest tighten.

"Then what happened?"

Richard reached into his coat.

Clara immediately moved backward with Lily.

But Richard wasn't reaching for a weapon.

He pulled out a photograph.

The same photograph he had mentioned through the door.

He held it toward me.

"Your brother wanted you to see this."

I didn't take it.

"Why didn't he show me himself?"

Richard's expression changed.

"Because he couldn't."

"Why?"

"Because the people who arranged his death were watching everyone close to him."

I looked at the photograph.

Slowly, I reached out.

The image was old.

Nighttime.

A dark road.

A burning car in the distance.

The accident scene.

The same accident that had destroyed my family.

But something was wrong.

I looked closer.

My breathing stopped.

Because the photograph showed something the police report never mentioned.

A second vehicle.

Parked behind Julian's car.

Someone standing beside it.

Watching the fire.

I looked at Richard.

"Who took this?"

"Julian."

My eyes narrowed.

"He was there?"

Richard nodded.

"That was the first mistake they made."

I stared at him.

"Explain."

Richard stepped inside the office.

Clara watched him carefully.

"Julian discovered someone inside Vale International was moving money through secret accounts."

My stomach tightened.

"The company?"

Richard nodded.

"He found transactions hidden behind fake investments. Millions disappeared without anyone noticing."

I thought about all the strange reports Julian had reviewed before his death.

The meetings.

The late nights.

The arguments.

He hadn't been stressed.

He had been searching.

"He knew someone was stealing from us."

Richard looked at me.

"Not just stealing."

The room went quiet.

"What does that mean?"

Richard looked at Lily.

"Someone was building a case against your family."

My expression changed.

"My family?"

Richard nodded.

"Your father."

Again.

That name.

The same name Julian had written.

DON'T TRUST YOUR FATHER.

"My father died seven years ago."

Richard's face remained serious.

"Yes."

"Then stop speaking like he was involved."

Richard didn't respond immediately.

Instead, he walked toward my desk.

He placed another photograph beside the first one.

This time, it showed my father.

But not alone.

My father was standing with a group of men.

One of them was Richard.

Another was a man I had never seen before.

And beside them...

Was Julian.

But the date written on the bottom made my blood run cold.

It was taken two years after my father died.

I picked up the photograph.

"That is impossible."

Richard looked away.

"I know."

"Julian was with my father?"

"No."

Richard's voice became quieter.

"He was investigating why someone wanted you to believe that."

I looked at Clara.

She looked just as shocked.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Richard looked at me.

"Because Julian made me promise."

The anger returned.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

I threw the photograph onto the desk.

"Julian made Clara promise. Julian made you promise. Everyone knew something except me."

My voice cracked.

"I was his brother."

Richard looked at me.

"Exactly."

That answer stopped me.

"What?"

"He wasn't protecting strangers."

Richard pointed at me.

"He was protecting you."

The office became silent.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Lily started crying.

A small sound.

But enough to bring everyone back.

Clara held her closer.

Richard looked toward the door.

"We need to leave."

"No."

I looked at him.

"I'm not running."

"You don't understand."

"I understand enough."

I stepped forward.

"My brother disappeared. My company was compromised. My family has been lying to me for eighteen months."

I stared directly at him.

"I'm done being protected."

Richard studied me.

Then he slowly nodded.

"That is exactly what Julian wanted."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"He knew this moment would come."

Richard reached into his pocket again.

This time, he pulled out a small black device.

A memory drive.

My heart stopped.

"Julian left this for you."

I stared at it.

"What's inside?"

Richard's expression changed.

"The truth."

I reached for it.

But before my fingers touched the device, every screen in my office suddenly turned back on.

The cameras.

The computers.

The monitors.

All of them.

The security system had returned.

But there was something different.

The main screen showed the hallway outside my office.

And I saw myself.

Standing there.

Holding a gun.

Talking to Richard.

Someone had been watching the entire time.

Then a new window appeared.

A live video feed.

A room.

Dark.

Empty.

Except for one person sitting in the center.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that face.

Even after eighteen months.

Even after the funeral.

Even after believing I would never see him again.

Julian looked directly into the camera.

Alive.

And then he spoke.

"Adrian, if you're watching this..."

The video froze for one second.

Then Julian whispered:

"Richard is not the person you should be afraid of."

The screen changed.

A second figure appeared behind him.

Someone stepping out of the darkness.

May you like

Someone I recognized.

And beneath the video, a name appeared on the screen.
