Chapter 3 - The Man Behind The Door

The whisper outside my office disappeared.
For three seconds, nothing moved.
No footsteps.
No voices.
No sound from the hallway.
Only darkness.
I stood there holding my phone, staring at the final message on the screen.
I KNOW YOU FOUND THE BABY.
My fingers tightened around the device.
Someone knew.
Someone had been watching.
Someone knew about Lily before I even understood what was happening.
I turned toward Clara.
"Take her."
Clara looked confused.
"What?"
"Take Lily. Now."
The urgency in my voice made her move.
She grabbed the baby from the sofa and held her close.
Lily didn't cry.
She only stared at me.
Those gray eyes followed mine.
Like she knew something terrible was happening.
I walked toward the office door.
"Adrian, don't."
I stopped.
Clara's voice was barely a whisper.
"Julian told me never to open that door if someone came looking."
I looked back at her.
"What did he mean?"
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"He said the person outside would not come to talk."
The room felt colder.
I reached for the emergency button beneath my desk.
Nothing happened.
No alarm.
No security response.
I pressed it again.
Still nothing.
My building had one of the most advanced security systems in the city.
Everything was controlled.
Everything was monitored.
And yet, my private office had suddenly become a locked room with no connection to the outside world.
I looked at the cameras.
The screens were still black.
That was impossible.
I grabbed my phone and called my head of security.
No answer.
I called again.
Nothing.
"Someone cut the system," I said.
Clara looked at me.
"Julian warned me this would happen."
I turned.
"What else did he tell you?"
She hesitated.
"That if you ever discovered the truth, you would become the next target."
The words stayed between us.
The next target.
I had spent my entire life believing power protected people.
Money.
Influence.
Security.
Reputation.
I had built everything around the idea that nobody could touch me.
But standing there in the dark with my brother's child in my office, I realized something.
The people who wanted me gone were not outside my world.
They were already inside it.
I moved toward the desk and opened the hidden compartment beneath the drawer.
Inside was a small handgun.
I never liked keeping weapons.
Julian always joked about it.
"You trust contracts more than bullets."
He was right.
I trusted agreements.
Promises.
People.
And maybe that was why I never saw the betrayal coming.
I checked the weapon.
Clara watched me carefully.
"You're going after them."
"I'm finding my brother."
She looked down.
"Adrian..."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"There is something you need to know about Julian."
I waited.
"He wasn't just hiding from someone."
My expression changed.
"What does that mean?"
Clara swallowed.
"He was looking for someone."
"Who?"
She looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
"Your mother."
My chest tightened.
"My mother died twelve years ago."
"I know."
"Then why would Julian be looking for her?"
Clara didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she walked toward my desk.
She picked up the old photograph.
The one showing Julian outside my company headquarters.
She pointed at the man standing beside him.
"You recognize him?"
I looked again.
The image was blurry.
But the face was clear enough.
My father's former business partner.
Richard Hale.
A man who had disappeared from public life after my father's death.
A man everyone believed had left the country.
"What does Richard have to do with this?"
Clara's voice became quiet.
"Everything."
Before I could respond, something hit the office door.
A loud impact.
Lily moved slightly in Clara's arms.
The second impact was harder.
The lock shook.
Someone was trying to get inside.
I stepped forward.
"Adrian."
Clara's voice warned me.
I ignored it.
I needed answers.
I needed to know who had followed me.
Who had watched me.
Who had spent eighteen months hiding the truth.
The door handle moved.
Slowly.
Someone was outside.
Waiting.
Then my phone vibrated.
Another message.
Unknown number.
I looked down.
The message contained only one sentence.
OPEN THE DOOR. YOU NEED TO SEE WHO I BROUGHT WITH ME.
My heart stopped.
Because whoever was outside wasn't threatening me.
They wanted me to look.
The door handle moved again.
This time, the lock clicked.
Someone had unlocked it.
From the outside.
The door opened slightly.
A shadow appeared in the gap.
Then a voice spoke.
A voice I recognized.
A voice that belonged to someone who should have been impossible.
"Adrian..."
I couldn't move.
I couldn't breathe.
Because standing on the other side of my office door was my brother's voice.
But the person behind the door was not Julian.
May you like
It was someone else.
And he was holding a photograph of the night Julian died.
