Chapter 6 - The Daughter They Erased

Evelyn couldn't breathe.
The photograph remained on the screen.
A little girl.
Maybe four.
Brown hair.
Wide smile.
Arms around Evelyn's neck.
"No."
Thomas reached for her.
She stepped away.
"No."
"Evelyn—"
"I would remember having a child."
His silence answered her.
She looked at Voss.
"Tell me he's lying."
Voss couldn't.
Evelyn's voice broke.
"Tell me."
"You had a daughter."
The room seemed to shrink.
"Where is she?"
Voss looked toward Thomas.
"Where is my daughter?"
Thomas answered.
"Alive."
Evelyn nearly collapsed.
Cole caught her.
She pulled away.
"Where?"
"We don't know."
"That's not good enough."
"After you discovered the child trials, you tried to take Emily and disappear."
Memory flashed.
A child's hand.
A red backpack.
Evelyn driving at night.
Someone following.
Thomas continued.
"They caught you."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"They altered me."
"Yes."
"And Emily?"
"They relocated her."
"To where?"
"Protected identity."
"Who ordered it?"
Thomas looked at the door through which Shaw escaped.
Evelyn understood.
"Katherine Shaw."
"Yes."
Evelyn picked up her phone.
"We find her."
Hale said, "Shaw has the ledger."
"We sent copies."
Hale almost smiled.
"Three copies."
The situation changed instantly.
Shaw believed she'd recovered the only evidence.
She hadn't.
Cole contacted Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Defense Department Inspector General through channels Hale personally verified.
The evidence spread.
Not publicly.
Not yet.
But far enough that nobody could erase it again.
Within two hours, warrants were issued.
Shaw's authority was suspended pending investigation.
Voss surrendered voluntarily.
Samuel Warren was arrested.
Briggs survived surgery.
And Evelyn sat beside Ruiz.
"You saved my life," he said.
"You nearly died because people wanted to manipulate me."
"Still saved it."
She looked at him.
"Go sleep."
He smiled.
"You first."
For the first time in seventy hours, Evelyn almost laughed.
Then Hale entered.
"We found something."
He placed a file before her.
Emily Carter had been given another identity.
ELLA MORGAN.
Adopted by a military family after her records were altered.
Evelyn's hands shook.
"Where?"
Hale hesitated.
"What?"
"She's nineteen now."
Evelyn did the math.
Her daughter.
Nineteen.
An entire childhood gone.
"Where is she?"
"Virginia Beach."
Less than twenty miles away.
Evelyn stared.
All those years.
So close.
"Does she know?"
"No."
"About me?"
"We don't know."
Evelyn stood.
Cole stopped her.
"You haven't slept."
"My daughter is twenty miles away."
"She'll still be there after you sleep."
Evelyn looked at him.
He was right.
She hated that.
She slept for six hours under medical supervision.
When she woke, the world had changed.
The video of Cole striking her had leaked.
It was everywhere.
News networks.
Social media.
Millions of views.
Cole had already issued a statement.
No excuses.
No mention of Evelyn's classified history.
He accepted responsibility and requested immediate administrative review.
When Evelyn saw him outside the ward, he looked older.
"You didn't blame fatigue."
"No."
"Or stress."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I hit you."
Simple.
Evelyn studied him.
"I haven't forgiven you."
"I know."
"I might never."
"I know."
"But you protected me afterward."
"That doesn't erase what happened."
"No."
Cole nodded.
"I'm learning that."
Evelyn appreciated that answer.
Hale drove her to Virginia Beach.
They stopped outside a small college medical training center.
Ella Morgan was studying emergency medicine.
Of course she was.
Evelyn almost laughed at the cruelty and beauty of genetics.
A young woman exited.
Brown hair.
Same eyes.
Evelyn knew instantly.
Ella walked toward the parking lot.
Then stopped.
She looked directly at Evelyn.
Neither moved.
Hale whispered, "Do you want me to come?"
"No."
Evelyn walked forward.
Ella watched cautiously.
"Can I help you?"
Evelyn had rehearsed a hundred sentences.
Every one disappeared.
"My name is Evelyn Carter."
Ella's face changed.
Just slightly.
"You know that name?"
Ella stepped backward.
"Who are you?"
Evelyn's heart broke.
"I think you already know."
Ella's eyes filled.
"No."
"Ella—"
"Don't call me that."
Evelyn froze.
Ella whispered:
"My name is Emily."
Evelyn couldn't speak.
Emily pulled something from her bag.
An old photograph.
The same photograph from the file.
Evelyn holding her.
"You had this?"
"My adoptive mother gave it to me when I turned eighteen."
"She knew?"
"Some."
"Why didn't you find me?"
Emily's expression hardened.
"I did."
Evelyn stared.
"What?"
"I found you six months ago."
"Then why—"
"You didn't have a daughter."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Emily's voice cracked.
"Your records said you never had children. Your interviews said you weren't a mother. I watched you talk about your life like I never existed."
Evelyn started crying.
"I didn't know."
"I know that now."
Emily looked at the viral video on her phone.
"Because this morning, someone sent me everything."
"Who?"
Emily showed her.
An encrypted email.
Sender:
KATHERINE SHAW.
Evelyn's blood went cold.
"What did she send?"
"Files."
"What files?"
"About Meridian."
"Emily, don't open anything else."
"I already did."
Evelyn's heart raced.
"What did you see?"
Emily looked toward a parked car across the street.
"Something about me."
Evelyn followed her gaze.
The car's engine started.
"Get inside."
"Mom—"
The word stopped both of them.
Emily looked shocked she'd said it.
Evelyn didn't have time to react.
The car accelerated.
Hale shouted.
Evelyn pulled Emily behind a concrete barrier.
The vehicle sped past.
Security moved.
It disappeared around the corner.
Evelyn held Emily tightly.
For one second, nineteen missing years vanished.
Emily clung to her.
Then Evelyn noticed something taped beneath the concrete bench.
An envelope.
Her name.
She opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
Katherine Shaw standing beside a teenage Emily.
Taken two years earlier.
Emily stared.
"I've never met her."
Evelyn turned the photograph over.
A sentence had been written across the back.
ASK EMILY WHAT SHE REMEMBERS ABOUT AGE FOUR.
Evelyn looked at her daughter.
Emily had gone pale.
"What?"
Emily whispered:
"I remember the room."
"What room?"
"The white room."
Evelyn stopped breathing.
Emily's eyes filled with terror.
"And I remember the woman who took me away."
"Shaw?"
Emily shook her head.
"No."
"Who?"
Emily looked past Evelyn.
Someone was approaching from the medical building.
Emily's entire body stiffened.
"Her."
Evelyn turned.
Dr. Amelia Voss was walking toward them.
May you like
And Emily whispered:
"That's the woman who told me my mother was dead."
