Chapter 6 - Midnight at the DeLuca Estate

Marco did not shout.

That frightened everyone more.

He placed the tablet on the desk.

Then he looked at his mother.

"Say it again."

Isabella's hands shook.

"Antonio survived."

"You buried him."

"I buried a body."

"You made me stand beside his coffin."

"I know."

"You let me believe my father was dead for twenty-two years."

"I was trying to keep you alive."

Marco laughed once.

That same empty laugh Elena had heard earlier.

"Again."

Isabella cried.

"Marco—"

"No. Say the sentence again. Maybe the hundredth time will make it sound less insane."

Elena stepped near him but did not touch him.

He noticed.

His eyes softened for one second.

Then he looked back at Isabella.

"Where has he been?"

"I don't know."

"Lie."

"I don't."

"Who knew?"

"Thomas Rusk."

Vincent shook his head.

"My father died fourteen years ago."

"He knew Antonio survived the first attack."

"And after?"

"I don't know."

Marco turned away.

Nico waited.

"What do you want to do?"

Marco looked at the security image.

"Bring him home."

Antonio DeLuca arrived at 1:07 a.m.

Not in chains.

Not under guard.

He came willingly.

The front doors opened.

An older man entered with a cane.

Marco stood in the center of the foyer.

Elena remained several feet behind him.

Antonio stopped.

Father and son looked at each other.

Twenty-two years of absence stood between them.

Antonio spoke first.

"You got tall."

Marco hit him.

The punch knocked Antonio sideways.

His cane fell.

No one moved to help him.

Antonio wiped blood from his mouth.

"Fair."

Marco hit him again.

Elena caught Marco's arm before a third.

"Marco."

He was shaking.

Not from fear.

From grief.

Antonio looked at Elena.

His expression changed.

"Sofia's daughter."

Elena released Marco.

"You know me?"

"I know who you are."

"Then you know what your choices did to my mother."

Antonio lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

"Look at her."

Sofia's wheelchair entered the foyer.

Mateo pushed it.

Antonio went still.

"Sofia."

Her voice was ice.

"You look terrible."

A broken laugh escaped him.

"So do you."

"Mine wasn't voluntary."

Antonio flinched.

Rafael appeared under guard.

The older man stared.

"Gabriel's boy."

Rafael stepped forward.

"Who killed my father?"

Antonio looked toward Isabella.

"No more lies."

She nodded.

Antonio exhaled.

"The Architect killed Gabriel."

"Who is the Architect?"

Antonio looked at all of them.

"By now? Me."

Marco stared.

Elena felt cold.

Antonio raised one hand.

"Not by choice."

Marco's voice was dangerous.

"Explain quickly."

Antonio sat.

"The system couldn't function without an administrator. After Gabriel died and Thomas Rusk withdrew, someone had to keep records, enforce agreements, prevent retaliation."

"So you became the Architect."

"I became the caretaker."

"People died."

"Fewer than would have."

Marco looked disgusted.

"That's your defense?"

"No."

Antonio met his son's eyes.

"It's my confession."

Sofia spoke.

"Did you pay to keep me medicated?"

Antonio looked at her.

"No."

"Do not lie."

"I didn't."

"Who did?"

He turned toward Isabella.

She stood.

"No."

Antonio stared.

"Belladonna account 406."

Isabella shook her head.

"That wasn't me."

"You controlled the foundation."

"I controlled grants, not shadow disbursements."

Antonio frowned.

Marco noticed.

"You don't know?"

"No."

Antonio stood.

"Then someone else took control."

Nico said, "The midnight call came from the foundation."

Antonio looked sharply at him.

"What call?"

Marco told him.

Antonio's face changed.

"The system is being hijacked."

Rafael laughed bitterly.

"By who? The assistant Architect?"

Antonio ignored him.

"Where's the original ledger?"

Marco held it up.

Antonio went pale.

"You opened the vault."

"Yes."

"Then we're out of time."

"For what?"

"The ledger contains more than names."

"What?"

"Account access. Judges. shell companies. Emergency protocols."

Elena frowned.

"Emergency protocols?"

Antonio looked at her.

"The Architect can freeze half of Greybridge's underground economy in an hour."

Marco's eyes narrowed.

"And somebody wants the ledger to do that."

"Or to seize it."

Nico's phone rang.

He answered.

His face hardened.

"Boss."

"What?"

"Foundation servers just went offline."

Antonio whispered, "Too late."

Marco grabbed his coat.

"Who's inside?"

Nico checked.

"One executive badge used."

"Name?"

Nico looked at Isabella.

"Her chief of staff."

Isabella froze.

"Daniel Crowe?"

Antonio's face changed.

Elena noticed.

"You know him."

Antonio sat back.

"Oh, God."

"Who is he?" Marco demanded.

Antonio looked at Sofia.

"Eva's son."

Elena stared.

"My aunt had a child?"

Sofia looked stunned.

"No."

Antonio nodded.

"She did."

"You never told me."

"She never told anyone. Except me."

"Why?"

"Because the father was Gabriel Velez."

Rafael went white.

"That makes Crowe..."

Antonio looked at him.

"Your half-brother."

Silence.

Every family in the room rearranged itself.

Elena sat down.

Her aunt's son.

Rafael's half-brother.

Isabella's trusted chief of staff.

A man positioned inside the DeLuca Foundation.

The perfect invisible bridge between every old enemy.

Marco looked at Antonio.

"How long has he known?"

"Probably always."

Rafael whispered, "He took my wife and daughter."

Antonio nodded grimly.

"He had motive."

"For what?"

"To punish every family that destroyed his parents."

Sofia closed her eyes.

"Eva."

Elena took her hand.

"Tell me."

Sofia cried.

"Eva loved Gabriel."

Rafael looked stunned.

"My father?"

"Yes."

"Then why did everyone say they were enemies?"

"Because after she became pregnant, Gabriel tried to send her away."

"To protect her?"

Sofia nodded.

"The Architect system was already swallowing us. Eva refused to leave me."

Antonio continued.

"She was killed three weeks after giving birth."

Elena's heart hurt for a cousin she had never known.

"Who raised Daniel?"

"Thomas Rusk."

Vincent stared.

"My father?"

Antonio nodded.

"He gave Daniel another last name. Placed him with relatives. Brought him into the foundation years later."

Vincent sank into a chair.

"So my father knew everything."

"Enough."

Marco headed for the door.

Elena followed.

"Where are you going?"

"Foundation."

"I'm coming."

"Elena."

"My cousin is trying to destroy the city because our families destroyed his. I'm coming."

He stared at her.

Then nodded.

"Stay beside me."

The phrase landed differently now.

Not command.

Promise.

They reached the DeLuca Foundation tower at 1:39.

Emergency lights glowed.

The lobby was empty.

Nico's team secured elevators.

Daniel Crowe was on the twentieth floor.

Server room.

Marco, Elena, Rafael, and Antonio went up.

The doors opened.

Daniel stood behind glass.

Late forties.

Elegant.

Gray at his temples.

A pistol rested on the desk.

Beside it were photographs of Rafael's wife and daughter.

Alive.

Rafael moved.

Daniel lifted the gun.

"Stay."

Rafael froze.

"You have them."

"They're safe."

"Where?"

"When this is finished."

Elena stepped forward.

"Daniel."

His eyes moved to her.

"Cousin."

The word made her ache.

"Why didn't you ever come to us?"

He smiled sadly.

"Would you have welcomed me?"

"Yes."

"You didn't know I existed."

"Because everyone lied."

"Exactly."

She looked around at the servers.

"What are you doing?"

"Ending it."

"By becoming what they were?"

His smile disappeared.

"I am erasing them."

"How many innocent people lose jobs when you freeze everything?"

"Collateral."

Rafael laughed without humor.

"You sound like Father."

Daniel's face twisted.

"Do not compare me to him."

"Why? He hurt people to protect family. So did you."

Daniel's gaze flicked to Elena's bruised wrist.

Rafael saw it.

His shame returned.

Daniel said, "I told you to frighten her."

Rafael stared.

"You told me to make her cooperate."

"I never told you to touch her."

Elena looked at Daniel.

"That's your excuse?"

He faltered.

"You created the threat."

"To get the ledger."

"You kidnapped my mother."

"To bring the families together."

"You took Mateo."

"I needed leverage."

"You took Rafael's wife and daughter."

His jaw tightened.

"They're safe."

"You keep saying that as though fear doesn't count as harm."

Daniel looked away.

Elena stepped closer.

"That's what they all said."

His eyes returned.

"Who?"

"Everyone. Antonio betrayed Mom to protect Marco. Isabella lied to protect Marco. Rafael hurt me to protect his family. You terrorized all of us to avenge yours."

Silence.

"You aren't ending the system."

Daniel's face tightened.

"You're proving it works."

The words hit.

Marco watched Elena.

Pride flickered in his eyes.

Daniel's hand trembled.

Then alarms sounded.

Nico shouted through Marco's earpiece.

"Server transfer started!"

Antonio looked at the screens.

"He's executing the shutdown."

Marco moved.

Daniel raised the gun.

Elena stepped between them.

"Elena!" Marco snapped.

Daniel froze.

She looked at him.

"You want revenge?"

Tears appeared in Daniel's eyes.

"I want them to feel what my mother felt."

"Then tell the truth."

"They'll bury it."

"Not if we release the ledger publicly."

Antonio stared.

Marco turned toward her.

Elena continued.

"All of it. Every politician. Every payment. Every crime. No family controls it."

Daniel shook his head.

"You don't know what that will do."

"It will destroy people who deserve it."

"And others."

"Then redact victims. Protect witnesses. Give it to investigators, journalists, courts outside Greybridge."

Marco said quietly, "She's right."

Daniel laughed.

"The mafia boss wants transparency?"

Marco's mouth curved without humor.

"Apparently my week has changed."

Daniel looked at Antonio.

"You agree?"

Antonio stared at the floor.

Then nodded.

"Yes."

"You built this."

"And I should have destroyed it before you were born."

Daniel's eyes filled.

"You let my mother die."

Antonio's face broke.

"I know."

Daniel's finger tightened on the trigger.

Marco moved.

A gunshot exploded.

Elena screamed.

Daniel fell.

But he had not been shot.

Rafael had.

He collapsed against the wall, blood spreading across his shoulder.

Daniel stared at his weapon in horror.

"I didn't—"

Rafael slid down.

Marco kicked the gun away.

Nico rushed in.

Medical team followed.

Daniel did not resist when they restrained him.

He looked at Elena.

"I didn't mean to shoot him."

She believed him.

That did not erase what he had done.

Nothing could.

As paramedics carried Rafael away, he grabbed Daniel's sleeve.

"My family."

Daniel whispered an address.

Nico sent men immediately.

Minutes later came confirmation.

Alive.

Safe.

Rafael closed his eyes.

Daniel began crying.

Elena watched him.

Not a monster.

Not innocent.

A wounded man who had become dangerous because he believed pain gave him permission.

She looked at Marco.

He was watching her.

The servers beeped.

Antonio moved to cancel the shutdown.

Then stopped.

"What?"

Marco approached.

Antonio stared at the screen.

"The transfer already finished."

"To where?"

"I don't know."

A new message appeared.

UPLOAD COMPLETE.

Marco's phone buzzed.

Then Elena's.

Then Nico's.

Then every phone in the room.

A news alert.

CONFIDENTIAL GREYBRIDGE LEDGER RELEASED ONLINE.

Elena stared.

"Someone published it."

Antonio went pale.

"No."

Marco looked at him.

"Why?"

Antonio pointed at the screen.

"Because Daniel wasn't the only one logged in."

A second administrator name appeared beneath the upload record.

SOFIA REYES.

Elena stopped breathing.

Her mother's account had authorized the release.

Then her phone rang.

MOM.

She answered.

"Mom?"

Sofia spoke clearly.

Too clearly.

"Elena, I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"I couldn't let them bury it again."

"Where are you?"

Silence.

"Mom?"

May you like

Sofia whispered, "The man who poisoned me is here."

The line went dead.
