Chapter 3 - The Price of Protection

Marco moved before Elena understood what she was seeing.

He pulled her behind him.

Nico struck the gunman's wrist against the elevator frame.

The weapon hit the carpet.

Two of Isabella's security men rushed forward.

The stranger was down in seconds.

No shots.

No screaming.

Only the brutal efficiency of people accustomed to danger.

Marco crouched beside the man.

"Who sent you?"

The attacker smiled through blood at his lip.

"You're already late."

"For what?"

"Midnight."

Marco's voice stayed flat.

"Try again."

The man looked toward Elena.

"Ask the fiancée."

Marco's expression darkened.

Elena stepped closer despite Nico's attempt to stop her.

"Where is my mother?"

The attacker's smile widened.

"Safer than your brother."

Marco grabbed him by the collar.

"Where?"

The man laughed.

Then bit down.

Nico forced his jaw open.

Too late.

The attacker began convulsing.

Elena recoiled.

"Poison?"

Marco stood.

"Call medical."

Nico did.

Elena stared at the man gasping on the floor.

"People actually do that?"

"Not often."

"That doesn't make me feel better."

"It wasn't meant to."

Marco turned toward the elevator.

"We're leaving."

Isabella followed.

"Marco."

"No."

"You don't know what you're walking into."

"Neither do you."

"I know more than you think."

He stopped.

"Then this would be a useful time to stop keeping secrets."

Isabella's face tightened.

Elena waited.

Finally Isabella said, "Antonio did save Sofia."

Mateo's accusation echoed in Elena's head.

His father didn't save Mom.

Isabella continued.

"But not the way I told you."

Marco looked at her.

"What did he do?"

"He made a deal."

"With Gabriel Velez?"

"Yes."

"For what?"

Isabella's answer was almost too quiet.

"For you."

Marco went still.

Elena felt the shift.

Isabella looked at her son.

"You were five. Gabriel had men waiting outside your school. Antonio learned about it. Gabriel demanded the ledger."

"And Father gave it to him?"

"No. He gave him Sofia."

Elena's skin went cold.

"What?"

Isabella closed her eyes.

"Not literally. Antonio told Gabriel where Sofia was hiding."

Marco stared at his mother.

"You said he saved her."

"He came back for her."

"After betraying her location?"

"He couldn't lose you."

Elena stepped backward.

The room seemed to tilt.

"My mother trusted him."

"Yes."

"And he sold her out."

"He regretted it every day."

"I don't care."

"Elena—"

"I don't care what he regretted."

Isabella's voice broke.

"Neither did Sofia."

Silence.

Marco looked sick.

Elena had never imagined a man like him could look that way.

He turned away from his mother.

"Did Gabriel get to her?"

"No. Sofia escaped before his men arrived."

"How?"

"Someone warned her."

"Who?"

"I never knew."

Elena thought of her mother.

All those years.

All those silences.

All those moments she would wake from sleep frightened and refuse to explain.

"What happened to the ledger?"

Isabella shook her head.

"Antonio hid it again after realizing Sofia had escaped. Then he was killed."

Marco looked back sharply.

"You told me Father died in a robbery."

"I lied."

Another silence.

Marco laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"Anything else you'd like to rewrite about my childhood?"

Isabella flinched.

"I was protecting you."

"No. You were managing me."

Elena understood that phrase too well.

People called control protection when they wanted gratitude for it.

Marco seemed to realize she was watching.

His expression steadied.

"We go to Saint Agnes first."

"My mother."

"Yes."

"And Mateo?"

"Nico's team watches the estate. Nobody goes in until we know whether your brother is there willingly."

"He called to warn me."

"That means he's alive."

Elena swallowed.

It was something.

At Saint Agnes, Sofia Reyes's room was empty.

The bed was made.

Her closet stood open.

A nurse was crying at the station.

"I'm so sorry."

Elena grabbed the counter.

"Where is she?"

"A man came with transfer papers."

"What man?"

"Mr. Velez."

"You didn't call me?"

"The papers had your signature."

Elena's stomach twisted.

"They were forged."

The nurse covered her mouth.

Marco's men were already checking exits and cameras.

Elena ran to Sofia's room.

She tore through the nightstand.

No necklace.

"Where is it?"

Marco entered.

"What?"

"Her Saint Christopher medal."

"Not here?"

"No."

Elena searched the drawers again.

Then she saw a tiny scrap of silver thread beneath the bed.

She dropped to her knees.

A broken chain.

Marco crouched beside her.

He lifted it.

"The pendant was taken."

Elena's eyes burned.

"Rafael has the key."

"Maybe."

"What else could it be?"

"Your mother may have hidden the real thing."

"She's sick."

"She survived people who wanted her dead."

That stopped Elena.

Marco continued.

"Don't mistake vulnerability now for weakness then."

She sat back.

"She never told me anything."

"She may have believed silence was the only way to protect you."

"Like your mother protected you?"

Marco's face tightened.

Elena regretted the cruelty immediately.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be."

"I didn't mean—"

"You meant exactly what you said."

He stood.

"So did she."

Nico appeared.

"Camera footage."

They watched on a tablet.

Rafael entered Saint Agnes at 9:58.

Sofia sat in a wheelchair.

He crouched before her.

Even without sound, Elena could see her mother recognized him.

Sofia slapped him.

Hard.

Elena almost laughed through her fear.

"That's my mother."

Marco's mouth twitched.

Then Rafael leaned down and whispered something.

Sofia's expression changed.

He showed her a photograph.

She agreed to leave.

"What did he show her?" Elena asked.

Nico enlarged the frame.

Blurry.

A young man tied to a chair.

Mateo.

Elena closed her eyes.

"He used my brother."

Marco studied the timestamp.

"They left at 10:04."

"Old estate?"

"Likely."

"Then we go."

This time Marco did not argue.

The DeLuca estate stood outside Greybridge, surrounded by dead orchard land.

The rebuilt mansion looked almost abandoned.

One light glowed on the second floor.

Marco's people had taken positions around the property.

Nico spoke quietly.

"Thermal shows seven inside."

"Mateo?"

"Could be."

"Sofia?"

"One seated figure."

Elena stepped forward.

Marco blocked her.

"No."

"You said—"

"I said we'd come. I didn't say you'd walk through the front door."

"If they see your men, they may panic."

"Exactly why you're staying behind cover."

A speaker crackled above the gate.

Rafael's voice filled the night.

"Marco."

Everyone froze.

"Send Elena in."

Marco looked at the camera above the gate.

"No."

"Then Mateo loses a finger."

Elena stepped forward.

Marco caught her.

"Don't."

Rafael laughed through the speaker.

"She's brave, Marco. Braver than Antonio."

Marco's jaw clenched.

"Let them go."

"Bring the ring."

Elena looked at him.

"The engagement ring?"

Rafael said, "You did bring Grandmother DeLuca's ring, didn't you?"

Marco's expression sharpened.

Isabella had insisted they take it.

It sat in his pocket.

"Why do you want it?"

"Because the DeLucas always hide keys inside symbols."

Elena stared.

"The ring is another key."

Marco removed it.

He examined the setting.

Inside the band was an engraving neither had noticed.

S.R.

Elena's initials.

Or Sofia Reyes.

Marco's expression changed.

Rafael's voice returned.

"Now you understand."

Marco looked at Elena.

She whispered, "He wants both keys."

"Yes."

"To the ledger?"

"Or to something worse."

The front doors opened.

Mateo appeared.

Alive.

Elena gasped.

"Mateo!"

He stood twenty yards away.

No restraints.

No visible injuries.

He held the black ledger.

Rafael stepped behind him with a gun.

Sofia's wheelchair appeared next.

Another man pushed her.

Elena's mother looked small beneath a wool blanket.

But her eyes were clear.

Too clear.

She saw Elena.

Then Marco.

Then the ring.

She began shaking her head violently.

"No!" Sofia shouted.

Everyone froze.

It was the loudest Elena had heard her speak in months.

"Mom!"

Sofia pointed at the ring.

"Don't give him that!"

Rafael pressed the gun against Mateo.

"The ring."

Marco's voice was quiet.

"Let Elena's family walk out."

"Then you get the ledger."

"I don't want the ledger."

Rafael smiled.

"Your father killed for it."

"My father made many mistakes."

"One of them was leaving you alive."

Marco's men shifted.

Rafael pressed the weapon harder against Mateo.

"Easy."

Elena looked at her brother.

Something was wrong.

Mateo wasn't afraid of Rafael.

He was watching Marco.

Angry.

"Mateo."

He looked at her.

"Tell her."

Rafael smiled.

Mateo swallowed.

"Elena, Mom didn't get sick naturally."

Elena's heart stopped.

"What?"

Sofia began crying.

Mateo raised the ledger.

"This has payments. Doctors. Caregivers. Everyone who kept sedating her whenever she remembered too much."

Elena stared at Marco.

He looked genuinely stunned.

"Who paid them?" she asked.

Mateo's eyes shifted toward him.

"The DeLuca Foundation."

Marco went still.

Elena felt herself pull away.

"No."

Marco looked at Nico.

"Find out."

"Already doing it."

Rafael laughed.

"You still think you're the good DeLuca?"

Marco ignored him.

"Who authorized the payments?"

Mateo opened the ledger.

He read a line.

Then looked up.

"Isabella DeLuca."

Elena's stomach turned.

Marco's mother.

Rafael smiled.

"And that's only page twelve."

Marco stared at Mateo.

"What else?"

Mateo hesitated.

Sofia began shaking her head again.

"Don't."

Mateo looked at her.

"Mom, she deserves to know."

"Know what?" Elena demanded.

Sofia covered her face.

Mateo turned the page.

"Elena..."

The mansion lights went out.

Gunfire erupted from the orchard.

Marco threw Elena to the ground.

Someone screamed.

The ledger fell open beside them.

A page fluttered in the grass.

Elena saw her own name printed across the top.

May you like

And underneath it, a date twenty-eight years earlier.

A year before she was born.
