Chapter 4 - The Name in the Ledger

Elena dropped the metal box and whispered, “Dad?”

Antonio Moretti stood behind the altar holding a wooden cane.

A scar crossed the side of his face.

Around his wrist was the cheap silver watch Elena remembered from childhood.

He was alive.

She could not move.

For nine years, Elena had imagined seeing him again.

In dreams.

In crowded train stations.

Walking past strangers who had the same shoulders.

She had imagined screaming.

Crying.

Running into his arms.

Instead, she stood frozen.

Antonio took one step forward.

“Ellie.”

That broke her.

Elena crossed the distance between them and struck him in the chest.

“You’re alive.”

Antonio flinched but did not stop her.

“You’re alive!”

She hit him again.

Matteo turned away slightly, giving them the smallest illusion of privacy while Dario’s men gathered outside the church.

Antonio caught Elena’s wrists.

“I’m sorry.”

She pulled free.

“Don’t say that.”

“I had no choice.”

“You had nine years.”

“I know.”

“Mom died thinking you were dead.”

Pain crossed Antonio’s face.

“I know.”

“She waited for you.”

“I know.”

“She kept your coat in the closet until the day she died.”

Antonio’s eyes filled.

Elena hated that his tears affected her.

“You don’t get to cry.”

“No.”

“You don’t get to be sad.”

“No.”

“You left us.”

“I did.”

“Why?”

Antonio looked toward Matteo.

“Because if I came back, you would have been killed.”

Outside, Dario shouted.

“You have sixty seconds!”

Antonio reached toward the metal box.

“We don’t have time.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“I’ve waited nine years.”

“And I will spend whatever life I have left explaining. But not if Dario finds that box.”

Matteo crouched.

“What’s in it?”

“The reason your father died.”

Matteo went still.

“My father had a stroke.”

Antonio shook his head.

“No.”

Matteo’s voice dropped.

“What are you saying?”

“Salvatore was poisoned.”

Silence.

Even Elena forgot her anger for a moment.

Antonio opened the box.

Inside were bank records.

Photographs.

Audio tapes.

A handwritten ledger.

He pointed to a name repeated across several pages.

Dario Bellini.

“He started small,” Antonio said. “Selling routes. Police schedules. Names of protected witnesses.”

Matteo stared at the pages.

“Why didn’t my father know?”

“He did.”

“Then why keep Dario?”

“He was building a case.”

Antonio looked toward the door.

“I helped him.”

Elena understood.

“That’s why you disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“Dario tried to kill you?”

“He arranged the crash.”

Her stomach turned.

“The body?”

“A man Dario had already killed.”

Matteo’s jaw clenched.

“And my father?”

“Dario began dosing his medication after the crash. Slowly. By the time Salvatore realized, it was too late.”

Matteo gripped the ledger until his knuckles whitened.

Outside, glass shattered.

“They’re coming in,” Antonio said.

Matteo grabbed the box.

A gunshot cracked.

Then another.

The church doors burst open.

Dario entered with four men.

He looked at Antonio.

For the first time, his confidence vanished.

“You,” he whispered.

Antonio smiled grimly.

“Disappointed?”

Dario recovered.

“Very.”

Matteo stepped in front of Elena and Antonio.

“You poisoned my father.”

Dario shrugged.

“Your father was already dying.”

“You betrayed him.”

“Your father was weak.”

Matteo’s expression became terrifyingly calm.

Dario continued.

“He wanted to turn the organization legitimate. Sell properties. Close routes. Stop paying officials. He would have destroyed everything.”

“He wanted to change.”

“He wanted to become soft.”

“And you killed him for it.”

“I preserved what he built.”

“No,” Matteo said. “You stole it.”

Dario’s eyes flicked to the ledger.

“Give me the box.”

Matteo smiled.

“No.”

Dario raised his weapon.

Elena saw movement behind him.

Rosa.

Standing near the church entrance.

Holding a phone.

Dario did not see her.

Elena did.

Rosa pressed one finger to her lips.

Recording.

Good.

Elena stepped around Matteo.

He grabbed her arm.

She whispered, “Trust me.”

Then she faced Dario.

“You framed me.”

Dario laughed.

“At least you finally figured something out.”

“Why?”

“Because you were asking questions.”

“I wasn’t.”

“Not intentionally. But you kept finding things. You found Matteo’s photograph. You asked Rosa about old employees. Then you wore his shirt.”

Elena frowned.

“What does the shirt have to do with anything?”

Dario’s mouth twisted.

“Everything.”

Matteo looked at him.

Dario smiled.

“Everyone knows what happens when Matteo Valente cares about someone.”

Matteo’s expression hardened.

“They become leverage.”

Dario looked at Elena.

“I needed him distracted.”

Elena suddenly understood.

The missing watch.

The money.

The accusations.

It was never about removing her.

It was about making Matteo suspicious of her.

Keeping them apart.

“Why the thirty thousand?” Elena asked.

Dario tapped the ledger.

“Covering payments.”

“To who?”

Dario smiled.

“You won’t live long enough to care.”

Rosa moved.

One of Dario’s men spotted her.

“Hey!”

Everything exploded.

Matteo fired.

Rosa ducked.

Antonio pulled Elena behind the altar.

Gunshots shattered wood.

People screamed.

Matteo moved with brutal precision.

Within seconds, two of Dario’s men were down.

The others retreated.

Dario ran toward a side exit.

Matteo followed.

“Elena, stay!”

Of course she did not.

She grabbed the box and ran after him.

Outside, rain had begun.

Dario jumped into a black SUV.

Matteo fired at the tires.

The vehicle swerved.

Then sped away.

Elena reached Matteo.

“You let him go?”

“I need him alive.”

“For what?”

“To find everyone working with him.”

Police sirens sounded in the distance.

Antonio emerged with Rosa.

Elena stared at her.

“You knew my father was alive.”

Rosa’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Nine years.”

Elena’s heart cracked again.

“Everyone knew except me.”

“No,” Antonio said. “Very few.”

“Enough.”

“Elena—”

She walked away.

Matteo followed.

“Leave me alone.”

“You can’t be alone right now.”

“Stop telling me what I can’t do.”

He stopped.

She turned.

Rain streaked down his face.

Elena pointed toward her father.

“He abandoned me to protect me.”

Then toward Rosa.

“She lied to protect me.”

Then Matteo.

“You watched my family from the shadows to protect me.”

Her voice broke.

“I’m tired of being protected by people who never ask what it costs me.”

Matteo said nothing.

She wiped her face.

“I want truth.”

“You’ll have it.”

“All of it.”

“Yes.”

“And after that, I decide what happens to me.”

Matteo nodded.

“Yes.”

It was the first promise she believed.

They returned to the mansion before sunrise.

Antonio was placed in a secure guest suite.

Matteo sent copies of the ledger to three lawyers and one federal contact Salvatore had trusted years earlier.

For the first time, Dario was the hunted man.

Elena could not sleep.

She returned to the ballroom.

Matteo found her there.

She stood beneath the chandelier.

“Why is it never lit?” she asked.

He leaned against the doorframe.

“My mother died seven years ago.”

Elena looked at him.

“She loved this room?”

“Yes.”

“What was she like?”

“Loud.”

Elena smiled faintly.

Matteo did too.

“She danced badly,” he said.

“So do I.”

“I saw.”

Elena turned.

“You watched me?”

Matteo realized his mistake.

“You waved.”

“I was waving at the camera.”

“You knew?”

“I guessed.”

Elena folded her arms.

“So you watched.”

“For security.”

“In your shirt.”

Matteo looked almost uncomfortable.

Elena had not known that was possible.

A laugh escaped her.

Real.

Small.

Unexpected.

Matteo stared at her as though the sound had physically touched him.

Then his phone rang.

The moment vanished.

He answered.

Listened.

His face changed.

“What?”

He ended the call.

Elena’s smile disappeared.

“What happened?”

“Dario made a move.”

“What kind?”

Matteo looked at her.

“He sent copies of the stolen accounts to every major family in Chicago.”

“So?”

“He told them you have the originals.”

Elena went cold.

“Why?”

“To make you a target.”

Her phone began vibrating.

Unknown calls.

One after another.

Matteo took it from her.

Another message arrived.

WE WANT THE LEDGER.

Then another.

MIDNIGHT.

Then a photograph appeared.

Elena’s blood froze.

It showed Antonio’s empty guest room.

The window open.

Blood on the floor.

Her father was gone.

Beneath the photograph were six words.
