Chapter 7 - Before Sunrise

Chicago Union Station was already waking when Sophia arrived.
Commuters moved through the Great Hall.
Coffee shops opened.
Announcements echoed beneath the high ceiling.
A hundred ordinary lives crossed paths while Sophia carried a tiny key that men had spent decades trying to find.
Adrian stayed beside her.
Marco moved ahead.
No weapons visible.
No confrontation unless necessary.
Too many people.
Too many cameras.
Locker 302 was located inside a private luggage facility near the south concourse.
Sophia approached.
Her hands shook.
Adrian noticed.
"You don't have to open it."
"Yes, I do."
"That's different from having to."
She looked at him.
"Why do you keep giving me exits?"
"Because you should have them."
Sophia stared at him for a moment.
Then inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a small metal case.
No money.
No documents.
A phone.
Old-fashioned.
Basic keypad.
And another envelope.
Sophia opened it.
Her father's handwriting.
CALL ONE NUMBER.
Below it was a number.
Adrian frowned.
"Could be trapped."
"It's been sitting here twenty years."
"That doesn't make it safer."
Sophia smiled faintly.
"You're very optimistic."
"I'm alive."
She dialed.
The phone rang once.
Then connected automatically.
A recorded voice began.
Thomas Reed.
"If Sophia is hearing this, then the network found you."
Her eyes filled.
Adrian looked away.
"Do not trust anyone who asks you to hand them the archive."
Sophia glanced at Adrian.
"That includes police. Prosecutors. Morettis. Anyone."
Adrian's mouth tightened.
Thomas continued.
"The archive is stored in an encrypted trust account. The key you carry is only half the access."
Sophia frowned.
"The other half belongs to Carlo Moretti's son."
Adrian froze.
Sophia turned.
"What?"
The recording continued.
"Adrian Moretti does not know he has it."
Adrian stared at the phone.
"If he grew into his father's son, walk away."
Sophia watched him.
"If he grew into his mother's son, trust him with the choice."
The recording ended.
Adrian looked shaken.
Sophia whispered, "What could you have?"
He thought.
His mother's belongings.
Her jewelry.
Letters.
Then remembered.
A signet ring.
His mother had given it to him the week before she died.
He still wore it on a chain beneath his shirt.
Adrian pulled it out.
Sophia stared.
The ring had the Moretti crest.
Marco looked closer.
"Inside."
A tiny sequence of engraved numbers ran along the interior.
Sophia's pulse jumped.
"That's probably the second key."
A voice behind them said, "Correct."
Judge Elias Ward stood ten feet away.
Daniel beside him.
Vittorio behind them.
Sophia froze.
Three enemies.
Except Vittorio wasn't standing with Ward willingly.
Two men flanked him.
Daniel smiled at Sophia.
"Morning."
She felt no fear this time.
Only disgust.
Ward was seventy-two.
Silver hair.
Tailored coat.
He looked exactly like the respected federal judge seen on television.
Calm.
Measured.
Decent.
Sophia hated him immediately.
"Ms. Reed," Ward said. "You've caused an extraordinary amount of trouble."
"I've been told."
He smiled.
"Give me the phone."
"No."
Daniel stepped forward.
Adrian moved slightly.
Ward raised a hand.
"Let's not make a public scene."
Adrian looked around.
"You brought men into a train station."
"I brought insurance."
Sophia looked at Vittorio.
"Did he catch you?"
Vittorio smiled without humor.
"I'm having a bad morning."
Ward ignored him.
"Sophia, your father made a mistake."
"He exposed you."
"He stole records."
"Records of crimes."
"History is filled with ugly transactions."
"That's a polished way to say corruption."
Ward's smile disappeared.
"You don't understand what happens if that archive becomes public."
"People get arrested?"
"Governments destabilize. Businesses collapse. Families are destroyed."
Adrian spoke.
"Sounds like consequences."
Ward looked at him.
"Your father understood."
"My father was a monster."
Ward studied him.
"At least you're realistic."
Daniel stepped closer to Sophia.
"Give him the key."
"No."
"Sophia."
She laughed.
"No."
His face tightened.
"Stop doing that."
"Doing what?"
"Acting like you're different now."
"I am different."
"You've known Moretti for six hours."
"And he's treated me better in six hours than you did in three years."
Daniel's face twisted.
Adrian almost stepped forward.
Sophia didn't need him to.
Daniel said, "You think he's going to love you?"
The word hit the air unexpectedly.
Sophia stared.
Adrian's expression changed.
Daniel laughed.
"Oh, come on. Look at him."
Ward sighed.
"This is tedious."
Daniel ignored him.
"He doesn't love women like you, Sophia."
Adrian spoke quietly.
"Enough."
Daniel smiled.
"Did I hit a nerve?"
Adrian stepped forward.
Sophia touched his arm.
He stopped.
She looked at Daniel.
"You don't get to define what anybody feels about me anymore."
Daniel's expression cracked.
Ward moved his hand.
His men advanced.
Marco's team appeared from the crowd.
Everything tightened.
Ward looked annoyed.
"You think cameras protect you?"
Adrian answered, "No."
Then police lights flashed beyond the station windows.
Ward frowned.
More officers entered.
Not Nolan.
Federal internal affairs.
State investigators.
Sophia looked at Marco.
He smiled.
"Robert Halpern talked."
Ward's face finally changed.
Adrian said, "You should have killed him when Daniel had him."
Daniel looked at Ward.
"You said he wouldn't—"
Ward slapped him.
Hard.
Publicly.
Daniel stumbled.
Sophia stared.
For the first time, Daniel looked like what he was.
Not powerful.
Useful.
Disposable.
Ward looked toward the exits.
Blocked.
Vittorio laughed.
"Now who's having a bad morning?"
Ward's men backed away.
Investigators approached.
"Elias Ward, do not move."
Ward looked at Sophia.
"You have no idea what you've done."
She looked back.
"Maybe not."
He smiled coldly.
"You'll spend the rest of your life wondering who lost everything because of you."
Sophia considered that.
Then shook her head.
"No."
Ward frowned.
"My father spent his life being afraid of what men like you would do if somebody told the truth."
She held up the phone.
"I'm done inheriting his fear."
Agents arrested Ward.
Daniel tried to move toward an exit.
Marco blocked him.
Daniel looked at Sophia.
"Tell them."
She said nothing.
"Sophia."
Officers grabbed his arms.
"You know me."
She looked at him.
"That's the problem."
They led him away.
Vittorio remained.
An investigator approached him.
"Vittorio Moretti?"
He smiled.
"Allegedly."
Adrian looked at him.
Vittorio's expression softened strangely.
"You look like your mother."
Adrian said nothing.
"She would be proud of you."
"Don't use her."
"I'm not."
Agents handcuffed Vittorio.
He didn't resist.
As they led him away, he glanced at Sophia.
"Your father was brave."
Sophia looked down.
"Too late."
Vittorio nodded.
"Usually is."
Then he was gone.
Sophia and Adrian remained beside locker 302.
The station continued around them.
Normal life.
Commuters.
Coffee.
Rolling suitcases.
Sophia looked at him.
"The note said you'd betray me."
"I saw."
"Did Vittorio write it?"
"Probably."
"Why?"
"To separate us."
She nodded.
Adrian held out the ring.
"You decide."
"What?"
"Whether we activate the archive."
Sophia stared at it.
"My father said the choice belonged to both of us."
"Then here's my half."
He placed the ring in her palm.
She looked up.
"You trust me?"
"Yes."
"That quickly?"
"No."
She almost smiled.
"That makes no sense."
"It took me about fifteen minutes."
Sophia laughed.
A real laugh.
Small.
Exhausted.
Unexpected.
Adrian looked at her.
Something shifted.
Neither of them spoke.
Then her phone buzzed.
Megan.
Sophia answered.
"Soph?"
"We're okay."
Her sister exhaled.
"Thank God."
"Daniel's arrested."
Silence.
Then Megan began crying.
Sophia closed her eyes.
"It's over."
But even as she said it, Adrian's phone rang.
Marco checked his.
His face hardened.
Adrian answered.
Listened.
Then looked at Sophia.
"What?"
He slowly lowered the phone.
"Ward triggered something before they arrested him."
Sophia's stomach tightened.
"What?"
"The archive."
"I thought we controlled it."
"So did I."
Marco stepped closer.
"Financial accounts are dumping files onto public servers."
Sophia stared.
"All of them?"
Adrian looked toward the station television screens.
Breaking news banners began appearing.
A senator resigning.
A police commander suspended.
Three CEOs under investigation.
Names scrolling.
Then another headline appeared.
MORETTI ENTERPRISES LINKED TO DECADES-OLD CRIMINAL NETWORK.
Sophia looked at Adrian.
He stared at the screen.
Everything he owned had just become evidence.
She whispered his name.
Adrian didn't answer.
Then another banner appeared beneath the first.
ARREST WARRANT EXPECTED FOR ADRIAN MORETTI.
Marco swore.
Sophia turned toward Adrian.
Police officers at the far end of the concourse looked in their direction.
May you like
Adrian took one step back.
And Sophia realized the man who had saved her from being hunted was about to become the most hunted man in Chicago.
