Chapter 6 - The Key Around Her Neck

They reached the storage facility at 4:21 a.m.

The front gate hung open.

One security booth window had been shattered.

Sophia jumped from the SUV before it fully stopped.

Adrian caught up.

"Stay behind me."

She didn't argue.

Not because she suddenly enjoyed instructions.

Because someone had broken into a storage building connected to her dead father and a federal judge.

Sometimes stubbornness had limits.

Unit 318 sat at the end of a long corridor.

The lock was gone.

Sophia stopped.

The door stood slightly open.

Adrian looked toward Marco.

Two men flanked the hallway.

Adrian pushed the door upward.

Inside, boxes had been ripped apart.

Her mother's clothes.

Old schoolbooks.

Family photographs.

Christmas decorations.

Everything scattered.

Sophia stepped inside slowly.

"This was her whole life."

Adrian watched her.

"We'll fix it."

She looked at him.

"You can't fix everything."

"No."

"Then stop saying things like that."

"Okay."

She crouched beside a broken jewelry box.

Empty.

Her breathing changed.

"The pendant was here."

Adrian scanned the floor.

"What did it look like?"

"Silver. Round. About the size of a quarter."

Marco knelt near the back wall.

"Footprints."

Sophia turned.

Dusty shoe marks.

Two people.

One set led in.

Another out.

Adrian looked at the floor.

"Whoever searched this knew what they wanted."

Sophia closed her eyes.

"I had it for years."

"When did you put it here?"

"After Mom died."

"Did Daniel ever see it?"

"Yes."

Adrian looked at her.

"When?"

"Early in our relationship."

"What did he say?"

Sophia remembered.

A dinner.

Daniel holding the pendant.

Asking where she got it.

She had told him it belonged to her father.

Daniel had stared at it longer than seemed normal.

At the time she thought he was being sentimental.

"Oh."

Adrian heard it.

"What?"

"He knew."

"Daniel?"

"He asked about it the first month we dated."

Adrian's face hardened.

"Then Vittorio lied."

Sophia nodded.

"Daniel wasn't just introduced to me."

"He was assigned."

The realization hit differently.

Three years.

Three birthdays.

Three Christmases.

Trips.

Arguments.

Apologies.

Promises.

Had any of it been real?

Sophia sat on a cardboard box.

Adrian crouched several feet away.

"He may have been assigned to meet you."

She looked at him.

"Don't."

"I'm not defending him."

"Then don't tell me some part was real."

"I wasn't going to."

"What were you going to say?"

"That what he did after meeting you was still his choice."

Sophia looked down.

"That's worse."

"Maybe."

"I loved him."

Adrian didn't react.

"I know."

"Do you?"

"Enough."

She laughed once.

"Why are you so good at this?"

"At what?"

"Knowing when not to tell me how stupid I was."

Adrian looked at the boxes.

"My mother thought loving my father could change him."

Sophia went quiet.

"Did it?"

"No."

"I'm sorry."

"She eventually stopped trying."

"Did she leave?"

"Not soon enough."

Sophia looked at him.

"Maybe nobody ever leaves soon enough."

Adrian met her eyes.

"No."

For several seconds the warehouse, Vittorio, Daniel, Judge Ward—all of it disappeared.

Sophia saw Adrian differently.

Not as the name Chicago whispered.

Not as a dangerous man in an expensive coat.

As a son who had spent years watching his mother survive.

He stood.

"Let's find the pendant."

They searched for twenty minutes.

Nothing.

Then Sophia noticed a small white jewelry envelope beneath a broken frame.

She picked it up.

Inside was a handwritten receipt from years earlier.

GOLDEN LOOP JEWELERS — REPAIR.

Her mother's name.

And beneath it:

CUSTOM DUPLICATE INSERT CREATED.

Sophia stared.

"Duplicate?"

Adrian looked over her shoulder.

"Your mother made another one."

"Where?"

The receipt listed no description.

Then Sophia saw a note on the back.

FOR M.

She whispered, "Megan."

Adrian's eyes widened.

Sophia grabbed the phone.

Megan answered sleepily.

"Soph?"

"Do you have Dad's necklace?"

"What?"

"The silver pendant."

"No."

"Think."

Megan was quiet.

"Mom gave me a bracelet."

"What bracelet?"

"A silver charm bracelet. Why?"

"What charms?"

"I don't know. Heart. Bird. Round coin thing."

Sophia looked at Adrian.

"Do you have it now?"

"I think it's in my purse."

"Don't touch it."

"What?"

"Get Elena."

"Sophia, you're freaking me out."

"Please."

Megan called for Elena.

Adrian contacted hotel security.

"Lock the floor."

Marco looked toward the entrance.

"We've got company."

Headlights swept through the broken gate.

Three vehicles.

Adrian moved Sophia behind a concrete pillar.

Men stepped out.

Not Vittorio's.

Professional.

Dark jackets.

No visible insignia.

One held up a badge.

"Federal agents!"

Adrian's face went cold.

Sophia looked at him.

"Could be real."

"Could be."

A man approached.

"Adrian Moretti?"

"Yes."

"Special Agent Collins. Step away from Ms. Reed."

Sophia frowned.

"Why?"

The agent looked at her.

"Ms. Reed, you're in danger. Come with us."

"From who?"

"Moretti."

Adrian almost smiled.

Sophia didn't move.

Agent Collins continued.

"We have evidence he orchestrated tonight's events to obtain financial documents."

"That's ridiculous."

"Ma'am, you don't know him."

Sophia looked at Adrian.

Maybe she didn't.

That remained true.

But she knew Daniel.

She knew fear.

And she knew Adrian had repeatedly given her choices when taking control would have been easier.

"Show me your credentials."

Collins held up a badge.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Wrong seal."

Collins looked at him.

"What?"

"Current federal credential design changed eight months ago."

Marco reached inside his coat.

The fake agents did the same.

Everything exploded at once.

Adrian pulled Sophia behind the pillar.

Marco's men drew weapons.

One shot hit concrete.

Another shattered a fluorescent light.

Darkness swallowed half the corridor.

Adrian pushed Sophia toward a side exit.

"Go."

"What about you?"

"Go!"

She ran.

This time she didn't argue.

Marco followed.

They reached the SUV.

Adrian appeared ten seconds later.

"Drive."

They sped toward the hotel.

Sophia's phone rang.

Megan.

She answered.

"Sophia."

Her sister was crying.

"What happened?"

"Someone came upstairs."

Sophia's blood went cold.

"Who?"

"Elena didn't let them in."

"Where are you?"

"In Adrian's office."

"Do you have the bracelet?"

"Yes."

"Good."

Megan's voice dropped.

"Soph?"

"What?"

"The round charm opened."

Sophia looked at Adrian.

"What was inside?"

"A tiny key."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

Then Megan whispered, "And something else."

"What?"

"A piece of paper."

"What does it say?"

Silence.

"Megan?"

Her sister read it.

"Locker 302. Union Station."

Sophia sat back.

Adrian looked at her.

Union Station.

Public.

Crowded.

Old lockers had mostly been removed years ago.

But some private luggage storage facilities remained.

Maybe her father had planned around exactly that.

"Don't tell anyone," Sophia said.

Megan hesitated.

"Too late."

Sophia froze.

"What do you mean?"

"The man outside the office heard me."

Adrian took the phone.

"What man?"

Megan whispered.

"He said he was your uncle."

Adrian's face changed.

"Vittorio is there?"

A second voice came through the phone.

Calm.

Older.

"Hello again, nephew."

Adrian gripped the phone.

"If you touch either of them—"

"I came to keep Ward from getting there first."

"Where's Elena?"

"Fine."

"Megan?"

"Fine."

"Then leave."

Vittorio laughed softly.

"Not yet."

Sophia leaned toward the phone.

"Why?"

"Because the locker isn't the end."

"What does that mean?"

"The key opens the locker."

"And?"

"The locker contains instructions to the archive."

Adrian said, "You knew."

"I suspected."

Sophia clenched her fists.

"Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because I needed you to find the key."

Adrian closed his eyes.

Of course.

Everything Vittorio did was leverage.

"Stay away from Megan."

"Then meet me at Union Station."

"No."

Vittorio's voice hardened.

"Five-thirty."

The call ended.

Sophia looked at Adrian.

"You aren't going to tell me to stay behind, are you?"

"I've learned that doesn't work."

"Good."

Adrian looked out the window.

"There's another problem."

"What?"

"If Vittorio knows about the locker..."

Sophia understood.

"Ward might too."

Marco accelerated.

They reached the hotel.

Megan and Elena were safe.

Vittorio was gone.

On the desk sat the bracelet.

And the tiny key.

Sophia picked it up.

A folded piece of paper lay underneath.

She opened it.

Not her father's handwriting.

Different.

Fresh ink.

One sentence.

ADRIAN MORETTI WILL BETRAY YOU BEFORE SUNRISE.

Sophia stared.

Adrian read it.

Neither spoke.

Then Marco entered.

His face had lost all color.

"Adrian."

"What?"

Marco held up his phone.

"We traced Judge Ward."

"Where?"

Marco looked at Sophia.

"Union Station."

Adrian checked the clock.

5:12 a.m.

They had eighteen minutes.

Then Sophia noticed something else on Marco's screen.

A surveillance photograph.

Judge Ward wasn't alone.

May you like

Daniel Mercer was walking beside him.

And Daniel was carrying the silver pendant.
