Chapter 14 - The Door Beneath the Bakery

Victor Hale stepped out.
Gabriel raised his weapon.
Emma stared.
"Victor?"
He looked exhausted.
"I should have told you."
"Told me what?"
"The evidence was never in the bank."
Victor opened the hidden room.
Shelves held documents, tapes, photographs, and account books.
Thomas's archive.
Everything.
"Why hide it?"
"Because evidence is useless if the wrong people control it."
Emma looked around.
Thomas had preserved decades of crimes.
Salvatore.
Adrian.
Carlo.
Police officers.
Judges.
Businessmen.
But there were also records proving Gabriel had spent years closing illegal operations.
Thomas had documented him too.
Gabriel found a note.
Salvatore's boy may yet choose differently.
Gabriel read it twice.
Emma touched his arm.
"He saw you."
"He barely knew me."
"Sometimes that's enough."
Victor revealed Adrian's ledger was a decoy.
The real ledger had remained beneath Morning Grace for fourteen years.
Federal agents copied everything.
Arrests began within hours.
Adrian had nowhere left to run.
But desperate men were dangerous.
Emma knew he would come back.
He did.
At 3:12 a.m., the lights failed.
Gunfire erupted outside.
Adrian entered through an old service tunnel.
He found Emma in the hidden room.
Alone.
Or so he believed.
"Give me the ledger."
Emma held it.
"You destroyed everyone for this."
"They destroyed themselves."
"You tried to kill Sophie."
"A mistake."
Emma's face changed.
"A seven-year-old child is not a mistake."
Adrian raised the gun.
"You sound like Thomas."
"Thank you."
He fired toward the ceiling.
"Book."
Emma set it down.
Adrian approached.
Then Gabriel stepped from behind the shelving.
Adrian aimed at him.
Gabriel didn't draw.
"You're surrounded."
"Then I'll take something with me."
His gun shifted toward Emma.
Gabriel moved between them.
Again.
Adrian smiled.
"There it is. Love. The easiest weakness."
Emma looked at Gabriel.
Then at Adrian.
"No."
Adrian frowned.
"It's why you lost."
"What?"
"You never understood that loving someone can make you stronger than fear."
Adrian's attention shifted for half a second.
Enough.
Gabriel disarmed him.
They crashed into the shelving.
The gun skidded away.
Adrian reached for a knife.
Emma kicked it beneath a cabinet.
Federal agents entered.
Adrian was pinned to the floor.
For the first time, there was nowhere to escape.
He looked at Emma.
"I'm blood."
Emma crouched.
"No."
She thought of Thomas teaching her to knead bread.
Margaret brushing flour from her cheek.
Sophie gripping her coat in the rain.
Gabriel learning to ask instead of order.
"Blood is something you gave me by accident."
She stood.
"Family is what Thomas gave me every day."
Agents took Adrian away.
Gabriel watched him disappear.
The old Moretti war ended not with an execution.
Not with revenge.
With evidence.
With testimony.
With men being forced to answer publicly for what they had done.
Michael survived surgery.
Carlo accepted a plea agreement.
Victor entered witness protection.
Margaret returned to her care facility.
And Gabriel faced consequences too.
Several companies were seized.
Investigations continued.
He cooperated.
Emma asked him one evening whether he regretted it.
They were standing inside the ruined Morning Grace.
"No."
"Not even the money?"
"I still have more than you think."
"That's disappointing. I was preparing to teach you how coupons work."
Gabriel almost smiled.
"Terrifying."
Sophie ran inside carrying paint samples.
"Emma!"
"What?"
"We need a color."
"For what?"
Sophie looked at Gabriel.
He nodded.
Then she handed Emma a folder.
Inside were renovation plans.
Morning Grace Bakery.
Emma stared.
"No."
Gabriel's expression fell.
"No?"
"You are not buying me a bakery."
"I already own the building."
"You what?"
"It reverted through one of the seized shell companies. I purchased it legally at auction."
"Gabriel."
"You can rent it."
Emma narrowed her eyes.
"Market rate."
He visibly suffered.
"Reasonable market rate."
Sophie whispered loudly, "Dad, just say yes."
Gabriel sighed.
"Yes."
Emma looked at the plans again.
Her bakery.
Not as a gift.
Not as payment.
As a second chance she could choose.
She touched the page.
"When did you do this?"
"After the hospital."
"Before you knew whether I liked you?"
"I was optimistic."
"You were controlling."
"That too."
Emma laughed.
Then Gabriel grew serious.
"There is one more thing."
"What?"
He reached into his jacket.
Emma immediately pointed at him.
"If that's a ring, I swear—"
"It isn't."
He removed a small key.
The original Morning Grace key.
Thomas's.
Emma's eyes filled.
Gabriel placed it in her palm.
"I found it in the archive."
She closed her fingers around it.
"Thank you."
Sophie hugged her waist.
Emma held her.
Gabriel put an arm around them both.
For the first time, Morning Grace didn't feel haunted.
It felt possible.
Then Emma noticed an envelope tucked beneath the renovation plans.
Thomas's handwriting.
FOR EMMA—AFTER EVERYTHING IS OVER.
Her breath caught.
She looked at Gabriel.
He hadn't seen it.
Emma opened the envelope.
May you like
Inside was one final letter.
And the first line made her sit down...
