Chapter 12 - The Secret Emma's Father Took to His Grave

Emma did not go alone.
She told Gabriel.
That alone proved how much had changed.
They drove to a church in Queens.
Michael Vale sat in the final pew.
He looked enough like Adrian to make Emma stop.
But his eyes were different.
Tired.
Not cold.
"You brought Moretti."
"I don't follow instructions well."
Michael almost smiled.
"So I've heard."
"Are you my father?"
He looked at her for a long time.
"Yes."
Emma felt nothing at first.
Then too much.
"Prove it."
Michael handed her the DNA report.
Thomas had tested him secretly years earlier.
Probability of paternity: 99.98 percent.
Emma sat down.
"Why did everyone say Adrian?"
"Because Adrian wanted them to."
Michael explained.
He and Margaret had been young.
Briefly in love.
Adrian discovered it.
When Margaret became pregnant, Adrian used the confusion between identical twins to claim Emma as leverage over Michael.
Thomas helped Margaret escape.
Michael disappeared to protect them.
"You left."
"Yes."
"You could have come back."
"I watched from a distance."
"That's not being a father."
"No."
His answer disarmed her.
"I don't deserve that title. Thomas did."
Emma's eyes filled.
"Then why now?"
"Because Adrian is going to kill Gabriel."
Gabriel's expression hardened.
"How?"
"He has the ledger, but Carlo's evidence is now with federal authorities. Adrian has nothing left except revenge."
Michael looked at Emma.
"And you."
"Why me?"
"Because he spent thirty years believing everything his brother loved should belong to him."
Emma felt sick.
Michael had been in the black sedan after the crash too.
Not watching the accident happen.
Following Adrian.
He had tried to stop him.
But Emma reached Sophie first.
"You saw me?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you help?"
"I called the hospital and police. Then I followed Adrian because I thought he had another team coming."
Emma wanted to hate him.
It would have been easier.
But truth rarely offered easy shapes.
Gabriel asked where Adrian was.
Michael gave him an address.
An old Moretti shipping terminal.
Gabriel contacted federal agents.
Adrian was cornered by dawn.
But he escaped again through a service tunnel.
This time he left a message for Gabriel.
ONE LIFE FOR ANOTHER.
Gabriel understood.
Adrian wanted him.
He planned to trade himself.
Emma refused.
"You don't get to decide you're expendable."
"He wants me."
"He wants control."
"If this ends it—"
"It won't."
Gabriel looked at her.
"You taught me Sophie wasn't my only responsibility."
Emma stepped closer.
"What does that mean?"
"It means I love you."
No grand speech.
No performance.
Emma simply stared.
Gabriel continued.
"I don't expect you to say it back."
"Good."
Pain flashed across his face.
Emma touched his cheek.
"Because I'm still angry with you."
"I know."
"And complicated."
"I noticed."
"And your life is insane."
"Also noticed."
She kissed him.
Then whispered, "But I love you too."
Gabriel closed his eyes.
For one second, he let himself have it.
Then his phone rang.
Sophie.
"Daddy?"
Her voice was frightened.
Gabriel straightened.
"Where are you?"
"School."
"What's wrong?"
"There's a man outside."
Security confirmed it.
Michael.
Gabriel turned toward him.
But Michael was standing directly across the room.
Sophie whispered:
"He looks exactly like the man Emma said was her father."
Emma went cold.
Adrian.
At Sophie's school.
Gabriel shouted for security to move.
Then Sophie's line went silent.
A second later, the school alarm began screaming through the phone.

And a man's voice calmly said:
"Now we trade"...
