Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Wouldn't Let Go

A little girl hung upside down inside a burning SUV and whispered, "Don't let me go."
Gabriel Moretti was nowhere near the wreck, but beside the shattered window lay a silver school bracelet.
Three letters had been scratched into its clasp.
G.M.M.
This was not an ordinary accident.
Emma Brooks didn't know that yet.
She knew only that the little girl's fingers were slipping from hers.
"Stay with me."
Smoke rolled through the crushed SUV.
Emma crawled farther through the rear window, ignoring glass cutting her knuckles. The driver in front was dead. She had understood that the moment she saw the angle of his neck.
The child was alive.
That was enough.
Emma found the utility knife she carried from her night shift and attacked the jammed seat belt.
"What's your name?"
"Sophie."
"Okay, Sophie. I'm Emma."
"Is Daddy coming?"
"I'm sure he is."
Sophie whimpered as another spark flashed beneath the hood.
Emma sawed harder.
The belt snapped.
She caught Sophie against her chest.
Then she crawled backward through the broken window.
She had carried the girl barely twenty feet when the SUV erupted behind them.
The blast drove Emma to one knee.
She curled around Sophie.
Across the intersection, a black sedan remained parked beneath a dark storefront.
A man inside lifted a phone.
"The girl survived," he said.
Emma never heard him.
She was already running.
By the time she reached St. Catherine's Medical Center, Sophie's blood had soaked through her factory uniform.
Doctors rushed the girl away.
Emma nearly collapsed.
Then Dr. Daniel Hart returned with news that made her sit upright.
"O negative. We've had multiple emergencies tonight. Our supply is critically low."
Emma looked toward the trauma room.
"I'm O negative."
"You're injured and dehydrated."
"Test me."
"Ms. Brooks—"
"Test me."
Twenty minutes later, blood flowed from Emma's arm into a collection bag.
Nurse Linda Perez watched her anxiously.
"You've already saved her once."
"Then let's make it twice."
Four hours later, Dr. Hart found Emma outside surgery.
"She made it."
Emma cried silently.
Not dramatically.
Not loudly.
She simply covered her mouth while relief moved through her entire body.
She had never met Sophie before that night.
It didn't matter.
At 5:40 a.m., Emma left.
No phone number.
No request for money.
No expectation that anyone would remember her.
She had no idea that twenty-seven minutes later three black SUVs stopped outside the hospital.
Gabriel Moretti entered through the private entrance.
People moved when Gabriel walked toward them.
Hospital administrators appeared without being summoned. Security guards straightened. Two men in dark suits followed several steps behind him.
Gabriel noticed none of them.
"Where is my daughter?"
Dr. Hart met him outside intensive care.
"Alive."
Gabriel stopped.
One word dismantled him.
He entered Sophie's room alone.
She looked impossibly small beneath the white blankets.
He touched her hair.
"I'm here, piccola."
Her eyelids didn't move.
Gabriel had spent years convincing enemies that nothing could reach him.
They had been wrong.
His daughter could.
And somebody had nearly taken her.
Dr. Hart quietly explained what had happened.
A stranger had pulled Sophie from the vehicle.
Carried her almost a mile.
Donated blood.
Stayed until surgery ended.
Then disappeared.
Gabriel slowly turned.
"Who?"
"Emma Brooks."
"Where is she?"
"She didn't leave contact information."
Gabriel stepped into the corridor.
His security chief, Luca Ferraro, waited there.
Gabriel's voice was quiet.
"Find the woman who saved her."
Luca nodded.
"And find whoever caused that crash."
That second task produced an answer first.
The truck driver insisted he had lost control.
But traffic footage showed something strange.
The SUV's regular route had been altered twelve minutes before impact by a message sent to Sophie's driver.
A message from inside Gabriel's own organization.
Then investigators found the sedan.
It had been parked across the street before the collision.
Waiting.
Gabriel watched the footage twice.
Someone had known exactly where Sophie would be.
At noon, Luca returned.
"We found Emma Brooks."
Gabriel looked up.
"Where?"
"Queens. Packaging plant employee. Former bakery owner. No criminal record. No connection to us that we can find."
"Bring her here."
Luca hesitated.
Gabriel noticed.
"What?"
"She refused."
For the first time that morning, something almost human crossed Gabriel's face.
"She refused?"
"She said she has work."
Gabriel stared at him.
Luca added, "She also said if Sophie is awake, we can tell her Emma said hello."
Gabriel looked through the glass at his sleeping daughter.
"Send a car."
"She refused that too."
Gabriel almost smiled.
Almost.
Two days passed before Sophie woke properly.
Her first question was not for Gabriel.
"Where's Emma?"
Gabriel leaned closer.
"The woman from the accident?"
Sophie nodded.
"She promised she wouldn't let me go."
Gabriel found Emma himself.
She was leaving North River Foods after midnight when a black sedan pulled beside the curb.
Emma stopped.
Gabriel stepped out.
She recognized him from photographs now.
Everyone in certain parts of New York knew the Moretti name, even if newspapers preferred safer descriptions: shipping magnate, private investor, real-estate developer.
Emma had heard other descriptions.
She didn't run.
"Mr. Moretti."
"You know who I am."
"I Googled you."
"That was probably a mistake."
"I've made worse ones."
Gabriel studied her.
She wore a faded coat. Her knuckles were bandaged. Exhaustion sat heavily beneath her eyes.
"You saved Sophie."
"How is she?"
"Awake."
Emma's entire expression changed.
"Really?"
"She asked for you."
That broke through every defense.
"When?"
Emma looked toward the subway entrance.
"I can come tomorrow."
"Come now."
"I have to visit my mother in the morning."
"I'll bring you back."
She hesitated.
Then got into his car.
At the hospital, Sophie reached for her immediately.
Emma sat beside her.
Gabriel watched Emma kiss Sophie's fingers.
"You didn't let me go," Sophie whispered.
Emma smiled through tears.
"I told you I wouldn't."
Gabriel noticed the tape still marking Emma's arm.
"You gave her your blood too?"
"She needed it."
"Do you know what people ask me for every day?"
Emma looked at him.
"Money?"
"Usually."
"I don't want yours."
"Everyone wants something."
"Then consider me inconvenient."
Sophie gave a weak little laugh.
It was the first laugh Gabriel had heard since the accident.
Then Luca appeared at the door.
His expression made Gabriel stand immediately.
"What?"
Luca held an evidence envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Morning Grace Bakery.
Emma's former bakery.
Gabriel looked at Emma.
"Why do you have that?"
"We didn't find it," Luca said.
"It was found in the dead driver's apartment."
Emma rose slowly.
"What?"
Luca turned the photograph over.
Someone had written one sentence on the back.
Gabriel read it.
His face changed.
Emma moved closer.
"What does it say?"
Gabriel didn't answer.
She reached for the photograph.
Then she saw the handwriting.
It belonged to her dead father.
And beneath it was a date from fourteen years earlier.
Emma read the first three words.
May you like
Then Gabriel took the photograph from her hand.
Because the rest of the message named a man who was supposed to be dead...
