Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Testified

Dominic did not resist.

Elena did.

“You know he didn't shoot me.”

Agent Donovan looked at her.

“I know what I believe. That's different from what I can prove.”

“You have the chip.”

“Not yet.”

Matteo reached for the envelope.

Donovan stopped him.

“Don't touch it.”

Everyone froze.

“The evidence team needs to collect it.”

Dominic understood.

Chain of custody.

Hale's network had survived him.

Whether Hale was dead remained unclear.

But someone was still moving pieces.

Dominic turned to Elena.

“Don't fight this.”

“They're arresting you for trying to murder me.”

“I noticed.”

“This isn't funny.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“They want chaos. Don't give it to them.”

Elena remembered her own words.

Angry people stop thinking.

Dominic offered his wrists.

The handcuffs clicked shut.

The image spread across every news network by evening.

Dominic Rossi arrested.

Crime boss accused of attempted murder.

Unconscious woman allegedly forced into symbolic marriage.

It was the perfect story.

Except it wasn't true.

Elena watched television coverage from her hospital bed.

Commentators discussed her as though she didn't exist.

Victim.

Mistress.

Hostage.

Witness.

Nobody asked her.

So Elena decided to speak.

Doctors objected.

Dominic's attorneys objected.

Agent Donovan objected.

Elena ignored all of them.

She requested a recorded federal deposition.

Under oath, she told everything.

The pendant.

Her father.

Carlo.

The gala.

The gunmen.

Dominic finding her.

Most importantly, she said:

“Dominic Rossi did not shoot me.”

The prosecutor asked, “How can you be certain?”

“Because I saw the shooter.”

The room went silent.

Dominic's attorney leaned forward.

This was new.

Elena had remembered during the previous night.

One gunman had removed his mask after believing she was dying.

She recognized him from Hale's recordings.

Thomas Keene.

Hale's chief of staff.

Federal agents found Keene six hours later attempting to cross into Canada.

He had Elena's blood on a pair of shoes hidden in his luggage.

The case against Dominic began collapsing.

But Elena wasn't finished.

She insisted the chip be examined.

The recordings exposed everything.

Carlo confronting Salvatore.

Hale discussing payments.

Keene discussing Victor.

And a recording Elena hadn't seen.

Carlo Rossi alone.

Speaking directly into a camera.

“If Dominic ever sees this, then I failed.”

Dominic watched from a federal interview room.

His father looked tired.

Older than Dominic remembered.

“I built something I thought would protect my family. Instead, it became the thing that endangered them.”

Dominic's eyes filled.

Carlo continued.

“My son will inherit my name. I pray he does not inherit my choices.”

Dominic lowered his head.

Agent Donovan watched silently.

“You can walk away, Dominic. It will cost you. But walk anyway.”

The recording ended.

For the first time in eleven years, Dominic cried for his father.

Not the boss.

Not Carlo Rossi.

His father.

By morning, the attempted-murder charge was withdrawn.

Dominic remained under investigation for unrelated financial crimes.

He expected that.

He accepted it.

When he returned to the hospital, Elena was standing beside the window with a walker.

He stopped.

“You're standing.”

“Observant.”

“You shouldn't be doing that alone.”

“There he is.”

“Who?”

“The hovering lunatic.”

Dominic smiled.

Elena looked at him.

“No cuffs.”

“No cuffs.”

She exhaled.

He approached.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Testifying.”

“I told the truth.”

“That hasn't always been enough in my world.”

“Maybe change worlds.”

Dominic looked at her.

“I'm trying.”

She glanced at the ring.

Dominic noticed again.

This time she didn't tease him.

“About this.”

He waited.

“You really would let me give it back?”

“Yes.”

“And you'd still protect me?”

“Yes.”

“And if I never wanted to see you again?”

His answer took longer.

“Yes.”

Elena studied his face.

“Good.”

She removed the ring.

Dominic felt something inside him sink.

Elena held it out.

He opened his palm.

She dropped it into his hand.

Then she said, “If I ever wear a wedding ring from you again, I'd like to be awake when you ask.”

Dominic looked at her.

She was smiling.

His own smile appeared slowly.

“That's fair.”

“Extremely.”

He closed his fingers around the ring.

Weeks passed.

Hale survived his apparent suicide attempt.

Investigators concluded someone had tried to silence him.

He began cooperating.

Names followed.

Arrests followed.

Victor entered witness protection again—but this time Elena knew where he was.

Their relationship rebuilt slowly.

Dominic faced his own reckoning.

He turned over records.

Closed illegal operations.

Sold businesses tied to criminal revenue.

He accepted a plea agreement for financial offenses committed years earlier.

No violence charges.

No fabricated murder case.

But consequences remained.

Elena respected him more for accepting them.

Three months after the shooting, she walked without assistance.

Six months later, Dominic stood outside the same bookstore where he had first recognized her.

Elena came outside.

“You've been standing there five minutes.”

“I know.”

“Planning a robbery?”

“Not today.”

She smiled.

They walked.

Their relationship was not a fairy tale.

It couldn't be.

Too much blood existed behind them.

Too many lies.

But something real grew anyway.

Dominic learned to ask instead of command.

Elena learned that accepting protection didn't mean surrendering independence.

Victor learned that disappearing to protect someone could wound them as deeply as staying.

Sofia learned to stop keeping secrets.

Even Matteo learned to announce when he hid crucial evidence inside religious texts.

For a while, life became almost normal.

Then one October afternoon, Elena received a package at the bookstore.

No return address.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Carlo Rossi.

Victor Vale.

Sofia Rossi.

And a fourth person Elena had never seen.

A woman.

On the back, someone had written:

THE LAST WITNESS.

Elena called Dominic.

He arrived ten minutes later.

He studied the photograph.

His face changed.

“You know her.”

Dominic didn't answer.

“Who is she?”

He turned the picture over again.

The handwriting wasn't Carlo's.

It wasn't Victor's.

It wasn't Sofia's.

Dominic recognized it anyway.

Because he had seen it on birthday cards throughout his childhood.

“Elena…”

She waited.

Dominic looked toward the bookstore entrance.

The bell above the door rang.

An elderly woman stepped inside.

She removed her sunglasses.

Dominic went completely still.

The photograph slipped from his fingers.

The woman smiled at him.

“Hello, Dominic.”

May you like

He whispered one word.

“Grandmother?”
