Chapter 9 - The Betrayal I Never Saw Coming

Marcus's badge had been duplicated. Someone had used his identity to enter my house. But the security footage showed the person clearly. It wasn't Marcus. It was my brother Diego.
I confronted Diego that night.
He denied everything.
“You're accusing me because you're angry.”
“You entered my house.”
“I didn't.”
“The camera saw you.”
He went silent.
Then he confessed.
He had been paid to collect information.
“By whom?”
He wouldn't answer.
“Diego.”
“I didn't know what they wanted.”
“You recorded me at the hotel.”
“They told me it was just family drama.”
“And the house?”
“They wanted copies of the documents.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
I believed him.
Not because I trusted him.
Because he looked terrified.
He told me Paula had also been contacted.
She had received money to keep filming.
The videos were being used to create a narrative that I was unstable and financially desperate.
They wanted to discredit me before the acquisition became public.
I asked why.
Diego shook his head.
“Because nobody would believe a woman who looked like she had nothing.”
I stared at him.
The cruelty of it was almost unbelievable.
But it worked.
For years, my family had helped build the exact image they now wanted to destroy.
The poor relative.
The difficult daughter.
The failed businesswoman.
The woman who inherited a house she didn't deserve.
It had all been useful.
Until the company sale exposed the truth.
I asked Diego for every message he had received.
He handed me his phone.
There were dozens.
Most came from anonymous numbers.
But one account appeared repeatedly.
J.R.
Julián Rojas?
No.
Julián Ordóñez.
I sent the evidence to Detective Vargas.
She replied immediately.
Do not contact anyone else. We have enough to act.
But I wasn't finished.
I wanted to know what was in the seventeenth drawer.
I returned to the cellar.
The drawer was empty except for one final object.
A small memory card.
I inserted it.
A video appeared.
My grandmother was speaking again.
This time, she looked directly into the camera.
“Valeria, if you are watching this, I am probably gone.”
She paused.
“I need you to understand something.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Your mother did not betray you because she hated you.”
I leaned closer.
“She betrayed you because she was threatened.”
The recording continued.
“Julián threatened Gabriel first. Then he threatened Teresa. Then he came for me.”
My grandmother explained that she had secretly transferred the most important evidence into Nexo Cero's early database.
I felt my breath catch.
The data was inside my company.
But there was more.
“Only one person knew the encryption key.”
She paused.
“My son.”
My father.
“Gabriel gave the key to someone before he died.”
The recording ended.
I stared at the screen.
Someone had the key.
Someone who had survived.
Someone my grandmother trusted.
My phone rang.
It was Teresa.
“I need to tell you something.”
“What?”
“I lied to you.”
“I know.”
“No. You don't.”
Her voice shook.
“I know who has the key.”
I waited.
“It's not Julián.”
“Then who?”
She whispered a name.
I couldn't breathe.
It was someone I had seen almost every day since the investigation began.
Someone who had helped me recover evidence.
Someone who had stood beside me when I was most vulnerable.
Someone I had trusted completely.
Then Teresa said:
“Valeria, get away from him.”
May you like
The cellar door opened behind me.
And a familiar voice said my name...
