Chapter 11 - The Room That Had Been Sealed

The muddy footprints stopped at my grandmother's bedroom. The door was locked. Marcus checked the windows. No one had entered that way. Then I noticed a fresh scratch around the lock.

Someone had been inside.

We opened the door.

The necklace box was empty.

The microchip was gone.

My heart dropped.

Marcus searched the room.

“Who knew about it?”

“Isabel.”

“Anyone else?”

“My mother.”

“And Julián.”

We called Detective Vargas.

Police surrounded the house within minutes.

But Julián was gone.

Then Teresa arrived under police escort.

She looked at the empty box.

“He found it.”

“How?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

I showed her the photograph of Isabel.

She began crying.

“She came back.”

I stared at her.

“You knew she was alive?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because she asked me not to.”

“Why?”

“Because she was protecting you.”

I wanted to be angry.

But too much had happened.

“What happened between you and Isabel?”

Teresa told me the truth.

They had grown up together.

They had both worked around Gabriel's business.

Isabel discovered the fraud.

Teresa discovered it later.

When Julián threatened them, Teresa panicked.

She gave him Gabriel's location.

She believed he would only be questioned.

She was wrong.

Gabriel died.

Teresa spent years carrying the guilt.

My grandmother never forgave her.

But she never abandoned her either.

Instead, Aurora made Teresa promise to protect me.

Teresa failed.

Then she tried to fix it too late.

I looked at the empty necklace box.

“What does Julián want?”

“The key.”

“Why?”

“Because it unlocks the original database.”

The database contained years of evidence.

Financial transfers.

Fake companies.

Property transactions.

Names.

Everything.

If Julián gained access, he could erase it.

Detective Vargas entered.

“We traced a transaction.”

“To where?”

“An offshore account.”

“Julián?”

“No.”

She placed a document on the table.

The account belonged to a company connected to someone else.

I read the name.

Sierra Azul Foundation.

Marcus frowned.

“That foundation was dissolved years ago.”

“Exactly.”

The detective looked at me.

“Someone has been moving money through it recently.”

“Who?”

She handed me a photograph.

The person pictured was wearing a hood.

But the face was visible.

I recognized her.

Isabel.

“She isn't helping Julián,” Teresa whispered.

“No.”

Detective Vargas shook her head.

“She is hunting him.”

I didn't know what to think.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

Come to the old boathouse at midnight. Bring the necklace box. Come alone.

I showed Marcus.

He immediately shook his head.

“No.”

“I have to go.”

“You don't.”

“If Isabel is there, she may have the key.”

Detective Vargas agreed to set surveillance.

We arrived at midnight.

The boathouse was dark.

Water moved quietly against the dock.

I stepped inside.

A woman stood by the window.

She turned.

Older than the photograph.

But unmistakable.

“Valeria.”

I stared at her.

“Isabel?”

She nodded.

She held the microchip between two fingers.

“I've been trying to keep this away from Julián for twenty years.”

“Why did you let him get so close?”

“I didn't.”

“Then who did?”

She looked past me.

Her face changed.

“Because the person who betrayed us was never Teresa.”

She pointed toward the darkness behind me.

“He's here.”

A man's footsteps sounded on the dock.

May you like

Isabel whispered:

“Don't turn around.”
