Chapter 10 - The Key

“Valeria.” I turned slowly. Marcus stood in the doorway. He looked exhausted. And in his hand was the same black envelope my grandmother had hidden years ago.

I didn't move.

“You heard the call.”

“Yes.”

“Your mother told you about the key.”

“Yes.”

Marcus stepped inside.

“I should have told you sooner.”

“You knew?”

He nodded.

“My father worked with Gabriel.”

I stared at him.

“Your father?”

“Samuel Reed.”

The name was familiar.

My grandmother's journal had mentioned him.

“He was Gabriel's security consultant.”

Marcus explained that after my father's death, Samuel had hidden the encryption key.

He had never trusted the police.

He had never trusted the company.

And before he died, he gave Marcus one instruction.

Protect Valeria.

I felt tears burn my eyes.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because someone was watching you.”

“Who?”

Marcus opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten page.

The key is not a password. It is a person.

I didn't understand.

Then Marcus showed me a photograph.

A young woman.

My grandmother.

And another girl.

The second girl looked almost exactly like my mother.

“Who is she?”

“Your mother's sister.”

I stared at the photograph.

My grandmother had never mentioned a sister.

“Her name was Isabel.”

“What happened to her?”

“She disappeared.”

Marcus explained that Isabel had worked for a financial firm connected to Sierra Azul.

She had discovered the illegal network.

She disappeared shortly after Gabriel died.

Everyone believed she was dead.

But Marcus had evidence that she had survived.

And she had the encryption key.

We drove to an address outside Guadalajara.

The house was abandoned.

Inside, we found a wall covered in photographs.

Aurora.

Gabriel.

Isabel.

Julián.

Teresa.

Me.

Nexo Cero.

Someone had been tracking my family for decades.

Then a projector turned on.

A video began.

Isabel appeared on screen.

“I know Valeria will eventually find this.”

She explained that Gabriel had discovered the network.

He had planned to expose it.

But someone betrayed him.

She had helped hide the evidence.

Then she revealed the truth.

“The person who gave Julián Gabriel's location was Teresa.”

I froze.

Marcus looked at me.

But the video continued.

“Teresa believed Gabriel was only being threatened. She thought giving them his location would save him.”

My mother had not intended to kill my father.

She had made a terrible decision.

But someone had turned that decision into murder.

Isabel named the person.

Esteban Rojas.

The dead financial director.

He had ordered the hit.

Julián had covered it up.

Teresa had been manipulated.

My grandmother had spent years collecting proof.

Then Isabel appeared in the video one final time.

“The original encryption key is inside Casa del Fresno.”

I looked at Marcus.

“Where?”

Isabel smiled sadly.

“In the one place Aurora knew nobody would search.”

The video ended.

We returned to the house.

The answer was closer than I realized.

My grandmother's bedroom.

Her old vanity.

A small jewelry box.

Inside was a necklace.

I had seen it countless times as a child.

I picked it up.

There was a tiny compartment.

Inside was a microchip.

The key.

I almost laughed from disbelief.

Seven years of building Nexo Cero.

Millions of pesos.

A company acquisition.

My father's death.

My grandmother's secrets.

All of it had been connected to something small enough to fit beneath a necklace clasp.

Then Detective Vargas called.

“Valeria, we have warrants.”

“For Julián?”

“For everyone involved.”

“Teresa?”

“She cooperated.”

“And Julián?”

“He disappeared.”

I looked toward the window.

“Where?”

There was a pause.

“Near Lake Chapala.”

I felt cold.

Because the house he was heading toward wasn't his.

May you like

It was mine.

And when I stepped into the hallway, I saw muddy footprints leading from the front door to my grandmother's bedroom...
