Chapter 8 - What Damon Hid Before Our Wedding

Police found Nathan’s office empty.

No blood.

No body.

His car remained outside.

The unredacted authorization was gone.

For the first time, the mystery was no longer buried history.

Someone was actively protecting it.

I moved into my mother’s house for several days.

Damon respected the boundary.

He texted only about my health and the baby.

No declarations.

No pressure.

That restraint didn't repair anything.

But I noticed it.

Rebecca visited.

Our first conversation lasted three hours.

She told me why she disappeared.

Our father had threatened Mom with custody litigation after discovering Rebecca wasn't biologically his. Richard Vale arranged for Rebecca, then seventeen, to live with relatives in Canada.

The fake death story was cruel.

But Mom had believed it necessary.

“I wrote to you,” Rebecca said.

“I never received anything.”

“Your father intercepted the letters.”

Another dead man with unanswered crimes.

Rebecca slid a box toward me.

Inside were twenty-one letters.

All addressed to me.

Different years.

Different handwriting as she grew older.

I couldn't read them yet.

But I kept them.

That evening Damon called.

“I found something you need to see.”

“Can it wait?”

“No.”

I met him in Victoria’s office.

He looked exhausted.

He placed an old prenuptial agreement on the desk.

“Our prenup?”

“The first draft.”

We had signed a different version.

A clause in the original draft concerned children conceived through assisted reproduction.

Any embryo created or transferred during the marriage would fall under a family trust controlled by—

“Victoria Carter,” I read.

Victoria stared.

“I've never seen this.”

Damon nodded.

“Neither had I.”

“Who drafted it?”

A law firm.

The attorney responsible had retired.

But Damon had found correspondence.

One email was sent three weeks before our wedding.

It referenced a “future Vale-Carter reproductive contingency.”

My name appeared.

Before our wedding.

Before we had tried for children.

Before any fertility testing.

Someone had planned years ahead.

“Why me?”

Rebecca answered from behind us.

“Because you're family without being a Carter.”

I turned.

She had entered quietly.

“My father wanted a Vale heir tied legally to the Carter family but carried outside his direct line.”

“That is insane.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Control.”

Always control.

Shares.

Trusts.

Inheritance.

People turning children into financial instruments.

I touched my belly.

“My daughter is not part of this.”

Damon looked at me.

“No. She isn't.”

“Make sure of it.”

“I already did.”

He handed me another document.

He had irrevocably waived any claim the Carter family trust could make against assets belonging to our daughter.

He had also created an independent trust in her name under my control.

“You did this when?”

“This morning.”

“Why?”

“Because whatever happens between us, she shouldn't inherit our mess.”

For one second I saw the man I had married.

Then I remembered Claire in my closet.

Love was cruel that way.

It didn't disappear just because trust did.

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A photograph arrived.

Nathan Hale.

Alive.

Sitting in a chair.

Holding that day's newspaper.

Beneath it:

STOP LOOKING INTO THE TRANSFER OR HE WON'T COME HOME.

Damon reached for his phone.

“Police.”

“No.”

He stared at me.

“We tell them.”

“Of course we tell them. But first look.”

I enlarged the photograph.

Behind Nathan was a wall.

A logo was partly visible.

Three letters.

CWH.

Victoria whispered, “Carter Women’s Health.”

The original fertility center.

Supposedly abandoned.

Damon called police.

We drove there with detectives.

The building was dark.

Officers entered first.

No Nathan.

But in the basement they found a locked records room.

Inside were boxes that should have been destroyed years ago.

My file.

Rebecca’s.

Damon’s.

And dozens of women I didn't know.

This had been bigger than us.

A detective opened my folder.

One document was clipped inside.

CONSENT AUTHORIZATION.

Patient: Evelyn Carter.

Signature: Evelyn Carter.

Except I had never signed it.

Then I saw the witness signature.

My stomach dropped.

I knew the handwriting.

Damon knew it too.

He stepped backward.

“No.”

The witness had signed his full legal name.

Damon Alexander Carter.

I looked at him.

“You said you didn't know.”

“I didn't.”

“That's your signature.”

“I never signed this.”

“Then prove it.”

A detective turned the page.

Attached was a photograph.

Damon.

At the clinic.

Standing beside my unconscious body.

May you like

Timestamped on the morning of the embryo transfer.

And in the photograph, he was holding the consent form.
