Chapter 7 - The Other Betrayal

Claire made a sound I would never forget.

Not a scream.

Something quieter.

More broken.

Owen stared at the child.

Rebecca closed her eyes.

I looked between them.

“You?”

Owen nodded.

Claire slapped him.

Hard.

He didn't defend himself.

“You judged me,” she whispered.

“I know.”

“You stood there acting destroyed.”

“I was destroyed.”

“You have a child with her!”

“It happened before you and I were together.”

Claire froze.

That mattered.

Not enough.

But it mattered.

Rebecca explained.

She and Owen had dated briefly three years earlier.

She used another surname.

He never knew she was my sister.

Their relationship ended before he met Claire.

Later, Rebecca discovered she couldn't safely carry a pregnancy.

She and Owen had created embryos during fertility treatment before separating.

Owen believed they had been destroyed.

They hadn't.

Richard learned about them.

He saw a grandchild.

An heir.

And somehow I became the surrogate nobody asked.

“Did you know?” I asked Rebecca.

“Not at first.”

“When did you learn?”

“After your transfer.”

“You let them use me?”

“I tried to stop it.”

“Not hard enough.”

She accepted that.

The little boy was named Noah.

He watched the adults with frightened eyes.

I lowered my voice.

“Take him outside.”

Damon arrived and carried Noah into the corridor.

It was the first decent thing I'd seen my husband do in days.

Rebecca told us the rest.

After the embryo implanted, Richard’s doctors attempted an experimental recovery after discovering the wrong legal paperwork had been used and fearing exposure. The medical records had been falsified to conceal the entire chain. Rebecca later used a gestational carrier overseas with preserved embryos from the same cycle; Noah was born from another embryo, not from a pregnancy physically removed from me. The old records had deliberately blurred embryo IDs, creating the horrifying impression that an implanted pregnancy had been transferred between women.

“So Noah was never inside me?”

“No,” Rebecca said. “Your transfer failed naturally. But you were still used without consent.”

Relief hit me so violently I cried.

At least one nightmare wasn't real.

But the crime remained.

Someone had placed my sister’s embryo inside me without asking.

“Who authorized it?”

Rebecca looked toward Victoria.

“My father.”

Victoria shook her head.

“I didn't know.”

“Your signature is on the authorization.”

“Forged.”

Rebecca removed a copy.

Victoria stared at it.

Then laughed bitterly.

“Richard.”

Her own brother.

Dead now.

Conveniently beyond prosecution.

But others had helped.

Doctors.

Administrators.

Nathan Hale.

And possibly Damon.

I looked at my husband.

“Did you know before six months ago?”

“No.”

I believed him.

That was almost worse.

Because it meant the man who betrayed me wasn't necessarily the architect of the larger crime.

He was simply a man who learned his wife had been violated and chose to investigate while sleeping with her best friend.

“You could have told me.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“That you'd think I knew.”

“You chose secrecy.”

“Yes.”

“You chose Claire.”

His eyes lowered.

“Yes.”

There it was.

No excuse.

I removed my wedding ring.

Damon watched.

I placed it in his hand.

“Evelyn.”

“No.”

“I love you.”

“You loved me while lying to me.”

“I know.”

“You loved me while missing our daughter’s ultrasound because you were in bed with Claire.”

His face collapsed.

That detail hurt him.

Good.

“I need you out of my house.”

“I'll go.”

“And my daughter stays with me.”

“She’s my daughter too.”

“Yes. She is.”

I looked at him steadily.

“And because she is, you're going to learn how to become the father she deserves whether or not you're ever my husband again.”

He nodded.

No argument.

Claire sat alone near the window.

Owen stood far from her.

Two broken couples.

One child in the hallway.

One unborn child inside me.

And decades of lies connecting everyone.

Rebecca approached me.

“I don't expect you to call me your sister.”

“Good.”

“But I want the chance to explain why I disappeared.”

“Not today.”

She nodded.

“Whenever you're ready.”

As Damon prepared to leave, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Nathan Hale.

Damon answered.

Nathan was panicked.

“They know Rebecca gave you the transfer log.”

“Who?”

“I can't say.”

“Then why call?”

“Because Richard Vale wasn't the person who ordered Evelyn’s procedure.”

Everyone went still.

Rebecca grabbed the phone.

“My father signed it.”

“No,” Nathan said. “He paid for it afterward. The original order came from someone else.”

“Who?”

Paper rustled.

Nathan breathed heavily.

“I found the unredacted authorization.”

“Read the name.”

Silence.

Then a crash.

“Nathan?”

No response.

“NATHAN?”

We heard a door open on his end.

Footsteps.

Then Nathan whispered:

May you like

“Oh God. It's you.”

The call disconnected.
