Chapter 11 - The Night Damon Lost Everything

Anna was alive.

Damon reached his apartment twelve minutes after I called.

Police arrived with him.

Anna did not run.

She sat on his couch and waited.

When Damon entered, he stopped like he'd been shot.

“Anna?”

She cried.

So did he.

I had never seen Damon collapse before.

He crossed the room and embraced his sister.

For several seconds, every betrayal disappeared beneath something older.

Grief resurrected.

Then Damon pulled away.

“You died.”

“No.”

“Mom buried you.”

“Mom buried an empty coffin.”

Victoria arrived forty minutes later.

Her face told us she knew.

Damon turned on her.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

He backed away.

“You let me mourn her for fifteen years?”

“I was protecting her.”

“From whom?”

“Our family.”

Anna had discovered the fertility experiments when she was twenty.

She threatened to expose Richard, Margaret, and others.

Someone sabotaged her car.

Victoria arranged her disappearance.

New identity.

Europe.

Silence.

“Why come back now?” I asked.

Anna looked at my stomach.

“Because they started again.”

She had been monitoring the clinic network for years.

When my name surfaced, she contacted Claire anonymously.

Claire’s identity had then been used for payments intended to make her appear involved if investigators got close.

“Who made the payments?”

Anna looked at Victoria.

Not accusation.

Expectation.

Victoria shook her head.

“Not me.”

Anna opened her laptop.

The account belonged to a Carter subsidiary controlled by one remaining executive.

Damon’s uncle.

Charles Carter.

Victoria’s younger brother.

The quiet one.

The man who rarely appeared at family gatherings.

Charles had inherited Richard’s obsession with protecting the company.

He hadn't ordered the original procedure.

But he had spent years covering it up.

Nathan.

Margaret.

The missing files.

The threats.

All Charles.

Police moved quickly.

Charles was arrested attempting to board a private plane.

His devices contained enough evidence to dismantle the entire conspiracy.

The story became public.

Carter Women’s Health.

Illegal reproductive research.

Forged consent.

Financial coercion.

Cover-ups.

Dozens of victims.

Victoria resigned as CEO.

The company stock collapsed.

Damon lost millions.

He didn't fight to save it.

He testified.

Publicly.

Under oath.

When asked whether protecting his family name mattered, he answered:

“No name is worth more than the people harmed to preserve it.”

I watched from home.

For the first time, I felt something toward him that wasn't anger.

Respect.

Not forgiveness.

Respect.

That evening he came to see me.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“The baby?”

“Kicking everything.”

He smiled.

Then stopped himself.

“You can smile.”

“I wasn't sure.”

“She’s still your daughter.”

His eyes filled.

“I know.”

I let him feel her kick.

His palm rested against my belly.

Our eyes met.

The intimacy was unbearable.

“I miss you,” he whispered.

I stepped back.

“I know.”

“I don't expect—”

“Good.”

He nodded.

Then he handed me signed divorce papers.

I stared at them.

“You filed?”

“No. You decide.”

He had signed everything my attorney requested.

House.

Custody framework.

Financial separation.

No contest.

“I thought you wanted another chance.”

“I do.”

“Then why sign?”

“Because another chance can't be something I trap you into giving me.”

That hurt differently.

After he left, I sat alone for a long time.

Then my phone rang.

Rebecca.

Her voice was panicked.

“Evelyn, where are you?”

“Home.”

“Leave.”

“What?”

“Charles wasn't working alone.”

“He was arrested.”

“I know. Police found messages.”

“From whom?”

“I don't know yet. But they're coming to you.”

My security alarm sounded.

BACK DOOR OPEN.

I stood.

“Rebecca…”

A shadow crossed the kitchen.

Then someone stepped into the hallway.

It was my mother.

She was holding a sealed envelope.

May you like

And she was crying.

“Before you call the police,” she whispered, “you need to know what I did.”
