Chapter 15 - The Hand He Never Let Go

The date meant nothing.

At least, not anymore.

The investigation had uncovered everything that mattered.

The photograph had been an old piece of evidence that had never been destroyed.

There was no new enemy waiting.

No hidden organization.

No final betrayal.

Just a reminder of how much pain their family had survived.

Roman folded the photograph and placed it inside the envelope.

Then he looked at Serena.

“I don't want another secret.”

“Neither do I.”

He held out his hand.

She took it.

They walked onto the dance floor.

The orchestra began playing.

Around them, people talked and laughed.

Some guests knew their history.

Others knew only the polished version.

Serena no longer cared.

Roman's hand rested at her waist.

Her head settled against his shoulder.

Six years earlier, he had been terrified that public affection would expose her to danger.

Now he understood something different.

Hiding her had not protected her.

It had only made her lonely.

“I love you,” he whispered.

Serena lifted her head.

“What?”

He smiled.

“I said I love you.”

“Louder.”

He laughed.

“I love my wife.”

Several nearby guests turned.

Serena laughed.

Roman didn't care.

He kissed her forehead.

Across the room, Sofia and Elena applauded.

Their mother cried.

Even Adrian smiled.

The past had not disappeared.

It had simply stopped controlling them.

Antonio remained in prison awaiting the consequences of his crimes.

Serena visited him once.

She told him she was not ready to forgive him.

He accepted that.

Healing did not require pretending nothing had happened.

It required refusing to let what happened decide the rest of her life.

Sofia built a career helping people escape abusive systems.

Elena published the investigation that exposed the city's corruption.

Their mother finally returned to the house she had once been too afraid to enter.

And Roman changed more than anyone expected.

He sold businesses connected to his father's criminal network.

He turned others into legitimate companies.

He stopped carrying a weapon everywhere.

He stopped checking every exit before sitting down.

Most importantly, he stopped treating love like a weakness.

One year later, Roman and Serena stood on another balcony.

The city glittered beneath them.

Serena rested her hand on his arm.

Roman looked down.

For one second, she remembered that first night.

“Never touch me in public.”

She smiled.

“What are you thinking?”

Roman turned his hand and intertwined his fingers with hers.

“That I was an idiot.”

She laughed.

“You were.”

“I was afraid.”

“I know.”

“I thought protecting you meant keeping you away from me.”

“And now?”

He pulled her closer.

“Now I know protecting you means standing beside you.”

Serena rested her head against his chest.

Inside, music began.

Roman kissed her hair.

“Dance with me?”

“In public?”

“Especially in public.”

They walked inside together.

Their hands remained joined.

No hesitation.

No secrecy.

No distance.

For six years, Serena had wondered whether Roman was ashamed to be seen loving her.

Now, in front of everyone who mattered, he made his answer unmistakable.

May you like

He held her hand.

And he never let go.
