Chapter 11 - The Man Behind the Mask
The man was Adrian Vale.
Serena's stomach dropped.
Roman raised his weapon.
Adrian slowly lifted both hands.
“You've misunderstood.”
Viktor laughed.
“Of course he has.”
Roman stared at Adrian.
“You worked for him.”
“For years.”
Serena couldn't believe it.
Adrian looked at her.
“I was the one who sent the message.”
“The one about my wife?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To bring you here.”
Roman's voice became cold.
“Why?”
Adrian looked at Viktor.
“Because Viktor doesn't have the ledger.”
Roman's eyes narrowed.
“You do.”
Adrian nodded.
“But I don't want it.”
He removed a drive from his pocket.
“I want immunity for everyone Viktor threatened.”
Viktor raised his gun.
“You traitor.”
Adrian moved first.
He shot Viktor's weapon from his hand.
Roman's men surrounded the station.
Police flooded the platform.
Viktor dropped to his knees.
For a moment, everything was over.
Then Viktor smiled.
“You think this ends with me?”
Roman stepped closer.
“It's ending with you.”
Viktor looked at Serena.
“No.”
Serena froze.
He smiled.
“Ask your mother what happened twenty-seven years ago.”
Serena turned.
Her mother stood behind her.
“Mom?”
Her mother looked devastated.
Viktor laughed.
“Tell her.”
Roman's face tightened.
Serena demanded:
“Tell me what?”
Her mother finally spoke.
“You weren't the daughter I gave to Roman.”
Serena stopped.
“What?”
“You were supposed to leave the city with Sofia.”
“Then who did you give him?”
Her mother started crying.
“I gave him the wrong baby.”
Silence.
Roman stared at Serena.
Sofia looked confused.
Serena felt the world disappear beneath her.
“What does that mean?”
Her mother whispered:
“Your sister was the one Roman was supposed to protect.”
Serena looked at Roman.
He had gone completely still.
Viktor smiled.
“And now the truth is finally coming out.”
Then Roman reached into his pocket and pulled out the old photograph.
On the back was a name.
Not Serena.
