Chapter 2 - The Envelope Blake Was Never Supposed to See

Blake stared at the sealed envelope as traffic moved around them.

“What is this?”

The man extended it farther.

“My name is Daniel Mercer. I’m Mrs. Bennett’s attorney.”

Olivia’s expression changed.

“Daniel, not here.”

“I tried calling.”

“I was on the plane.”

“This couldn’t wait.”

Blake looked between them.

Sabrina stood several feet away, confused and increasingly uncomfortable.

The three boys remained inside the Bentley.

Blake took the envelope.

His name was typed across the front.

BLAKE HARRINGTON — PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL.

“What does this have to do with them?”

Olivia stepped closer.

“It doesn’t.”

Daniel’s gaze moved to her.

“Olivia.”

She gave him a warning look.

Blake noticed.

“You just told me it doesn’t.”

“I told you that because this is an airport curb and my children are ten feet away.”

“My children?”

The words came out before he could stop them.

Olivia’s face hardened.

“I said my children.”

“You know what I meant.”

“Yes. I do.”

Sabrina finally spoke.

“Blake, maybe we should leave.”

He barely looked at her.

“Have the driver take you.”

“What?”

“I need a minute.”

Her humiliation flashed visibly.

Olivia saw it and looked away.

She remembered that feeling too well.

Being beside Blake while realizing his attention could disappear the instant something more important entered the room.

Sabrina straightened.

“Fine.”

She walked toward Blake’s waiting car.

He made no effort to stop her.

Olivia watched.

“That was unnecessarily cruel.”

Blake stared at her.

“You’re lecturing me about cruelty?”

“Yes.”

A bitter laugh escaped him.

“That’s interesting from someone who may have hidden my children from me.”

Daniel stepped between them slightly.

“Not here.”

Blake looked down at the envelope.

He tore it open.

Inside were three pages.

The first was a letter.

The second looked like a laboratory report.

The third was a copy of an email.

Blake read the first line.

Dear Mr. Harrington,

This document confirms that, five years ago, Ms. Olivia Bennett instructed our office to notify you regarding her pregnancy following the dissolution proceedings.

Blake stopped breathing.

He read it again.

“Instructed your office?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Blake continued.

Three separate attempts were made to deliver written notice.

His eyes moved faster.

First attempt: Harrington Global headquarters.

Rejected.

Second: Harrington residence.

Rejected.

Third: certified electronic delivery to executive office.

Received.

Blake’s grip tightened.

“That’s impossible.”

Olivia said nothing.

He turned to Daniel.

“I never received this.”

“I believe you.”

That answer startled him.

“What?”

Daniel nodded toward the third page.

“Read.”

Blake unfolded it.

An email chain.

TO: Executive Office, Harrington Global.

SUBJECT: Urgent Personal Notice Regarding Olivia Bennett Harrington.

The message had been received.

Then forwarded.

Not to Blake.

To Charles Whitmore.

Blake recognized the name immediately.

His father’s oldest friend.

Chairman of Harrington Global after Blake’s father died.

The man who had practically raised Blake through his twenties.

The response beneath it was brief.

Mr. Harrington does not wish to receive further personal correspondence from Ms. Bennett. All matters between them are concluded. Do not contact him again.

Signed:

Charles Whitmore

Office of the Chairman

Blake stared at the page.

“I never said this.”

Olivia folded her arms.

“I didn’t know that.”

“You believed it?”

“What was I supposed to believe?”

“You could have called me.”

“I did.”

Blake looked up.

“Once?”

“Twelve times.”

His face changed.

Olivia continued quietly.

“Your number was disconnected.”

“No. It wasn’t.”

“For me, it was.”

Blake remembered something.

After the divorce, his chief of staff had changed several privacy settings and blocked “nonessential personal contacts.”

Blake had approved it without reviewing individual names.

His stomach turned.

Olivia’s voice remained controlled.

“I sent a letter to your apartment.”

“I never saw it.”

“I sent one to your office.”

“I never saw that either.”

“Then Daniel sent certified notice.”

Blake looked at Whitmore’s email again.

“I never authorized this.”

“I know that now.”

“Now?”

“Daniel found the archived chain three months ago during another legal matter.”

Blake stared at her.

“You’ve known for three months that I didn’t reject them?”

Olivia hesitated.

“Yes.”

“And you still didn’t contact me?”

That was the first question that hurt her.

She looked toward the Bentley.

Three faces watched through tinted glass.

“I needed to know what contacting you would do to them.”

“They’re my sons?”

Olivia closed her eyes briefly.

When she opened them, there was no point pretending.

“Yes.”

The world seemed to narrow.

The airport vanished.

Traffic.

Voices.

Doors.

Everything.

Three sons.

He had three sons.

Blake sat down hard on the edge of a concrete planter.

Daniel stepped back.

Olivia remained standing.

Blake stared toward the Bentley.

“How?”

Olivia almost laughed at the absurdity.

“You understand biology.”

“I mean… triplets?”

“Apparently the universe has a sense of humor.”

He ran a hand over his face.

“They’re mine.”

“Yes.”

“Biologically?”

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

Her expression turned cold.

“I was married to you.”

“That’s not what I—”

“We did testing after they were born because there were hereditary medical questions. I have confirmation.”

Blake looked ashamed.

“I’m sorry.”

“Good.”

He stared through the Bentley window.

The boys were arguing over something.

One pressed his nose to the glass.

Blake nearly laughed.

Then his eyes burned.

He stood abruptly.

“Can I meet them?”

“No.”

The answer came instantly.

Blake looked at her.

“Olivia.”

“They met you thirty seconds ago.”

“They don’t know who I am.”

“Exactly.”

“I’m their father.”

“Biology is information, Blake. Fatherhood is a relationship.”

The words cut deep because he could not argue.

He had missed first steps.

Birthdays.

Fevers.

School mornings.

Nightmares.

Christmases.

He had missed all of it.

Not intentionally.

But the boys did not know that.

“How long were you going to keep this from me after you discovered the truth?”

Olivia’s eyes softened just slightly.

“I hadn’t decided.”

“You had three months.”

“I had five years of cleaning up the consequences of believing you wanted nothing to do with us.”

“Us.”

He repeated the word.

Olivia looked away.

Blake saw the history behind her silence.

He remembered their last fight.

He had called their marriage distracting.

He had accused Olivia of wanting a version of him that no longer existed.

When she had asked whether anything mattered more to him than Harrington Global, he had not answered.

That silence had ended their marriage.

Two weeks later she filed.

He had signed.

Then he flew overseas to complete a merger.

While she discovered she was pregnant.

“I would never have abandoned my children,” he said.

Olivia met his gaze.

“But I had no way to know that.”

Blake looked at Daniel.

“Why was Whitmore involved?”

“That’s what I’m trying to determine,” Daniel replied.

“Charles handled my family office.”

“He also appears to have intercepted multiple communications.”

Blake’s anger sharpened.

“Why?”

Daniel glanced at Olivia.

She shook her head.

“Not now.”

Blake stood.

“If there’s more, I need to know.”

“There is more.”

Olivia snapped toward Daniel.

“Daniel.”

“You brought me in because the situation changed.”

“I brought you because of the shareholder issue.”

Blake caught it.

“What shareholder issue?”

Silence.

Olivia picked up her suitcase.

“We’re leaving.”

He stepped forward.

“Olivia.”

She faced him.

“You got an answer today. You have three sons. They are healthy. They are happy. They are loved. That is all you are getting while they’re sitting in that car wondering why their mother is arguing with a stranger.”

The word stranger stopped him.

She was right.

Blake stepped back.

Olivia walked to the Bentley.

Before entering, she looked at him.

“I’m not saying you’ll never see them.”

Hope hit him so quickly it almost embarrassed him.

“But this happens on their terms,” she continued. “Not yours.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

“And if you turn this into a war—lawyers, publicity, custody threats—I will fight you with everything I have.”

Blake looked at the children.

“I don’t want a war.”

“I hope not.”

She entered the Bentley.

The door closed.

Blake watched it pull away.

Daniel remained.

“Why are you still here?” Blake asked.

Daniel handed him a business card.

“Because I think what happened five years ago was deliberate.”

“You already established that.”

“No. I established that your communications were intercepted.”

“What’s the difference?”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“The difference is motive.”

Blake stared.

Daniel looked toward Sabrina’s car disappearing down the lane.

“Mr. Whitmore didn’t simply keep you away from Olivia.”

He handed Blake another folded document.

It was a shareholder registry.

Blake scanned it.

Then stopped.

BENNETT FAMILY TRUST — 11.8%.

“What is this?”

Daniel answered quietly.

“Your sons inherited shares in Harrington Global.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Your father’s will says otherwise.”

“My father died before they were born.”

“The inheritance clause applies to all biological grandchildren.”

Blake’s blood went cold.

He read the number again.

Eleven point eight percent.

Enough shares to influence the board.

Enough shares to change control.

And Whitmore had known Olivia was pregnant.

Blake looked up.

Daniel’s phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“Olivia.”

He answered.

“Daniel?”

A child screamed faintly through the speaker.

Then Olivia’s voice came fast.

“Someone followed us.”

Daniel turned toward the road.

“Where are you?”

“We pulled into the private garage. The boys are inside. But there’s a car behind us.”

Blake grabbed the phone.

“Olivia?”

Silence.

Then a man’s voice came through the line.

“Mr. Harrington.”

Blake froze.

May you like

He knew that voice.

Charles Whitmore said, “It seems you finally found out about the boys.”
