Chapter 5 - The Truth Vanessa Tried to Bury

Adrian kept the phone against his ear, but he could no longer hear the woman on the other end.

Not because the connection was bad.

Because suddenly, every memory he had with Vanessa felt different.

Every conversation.

Every smile.

Every moment he thought was natural.

Now he wondered how much of it had been carefully arranged.

“Adrian?”

Vanessa’s voice broke through.

“You’re quiet.”

He looked at Claire.

She stood near the kitchen counter, exhausted but calm.

She was not watching him with anger.

She was watching him with sadness.

As if she already knew the truth he was struggling to accept.

“I’m here,” Adrian finally answered.

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You sound strange.”

“I’m tired.”

“Because of Claire?”

The way she said the name bothered him.

Not concern.

Not sympathy.

Something closer to annoyance.

Adrian looked down at the folder in his hand.

“No.”

A pause.

Then Vanessa asked:

“Did she show you something?”

His entire body went still.

“How did you know?”

Another silence.

Longer this time.

Then Vanessa recovered.

“I know Claire. She likes creating drama when she feels threatened.”

Adrian stared at the phone.

A month ago, he might have believed that.

A month ago, he would have defended Vanessa.

A month ago, he was still the man who thought Claire was the problem.

But now he knew something.

Claire had been dying.

And Vanessa knew.

The woman he trusted had watched his wife suffer.

“Where are you?” Adrian asked.

Vanessa’s voice became cautious.

“Why?”

“Just answer.”

“I’m at home.”

Adrian looked at the documents spread across the table.

Then he looked at Claire.

“Send me your address.”

Silence.

“Why?”

“Because I want to talk.”

“You’re angry.”

“No.”

He paused.

“I’m confused.”

That was the first honest answer he had given her in months.

And Vanessa noticed.

Her voice changed.

“Adrian.”

The sweetness disappeared.

“You need to think carefully.”

“About what?”

“About who has been with you from the beginning.”

The sentence should have comforted him.

Instead, it felt like a threat.

Because that sentence belonged to Claire.

Not Vanessa.

Claire was the one who had been there from the beginning.

Claire was the one who knew him before success.

Claire was the one who stayed when there was nothing to gain.

Vanessa had arrived when everything was already built.

“I’ll call you later,” Adrian said.

Before she could respond, he ended the call.

For several seconds, the room remained silent.

Then Claire spoke.

“You didn’t believe me before.”

Adrian looked at her.

“No.”

The honesty surprised her.

“I didn’t.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I thought you were trying to ruin my life.”

Claire nodded slowly.

“And now?”

Adrian looked around the apartment.

At the folder.

At the medical bottles.

At the woman standing in front of him.

“I think I ruined yours.”

Claire looked away.

The answer hurt because it was true.

The folder contained enough information to destroy Vanessa’s carefully built image.

But Adrian needed to understand everything.

Not just emotionally.

Logically.

He had built a company by studying details.

Numbers.

Patterns.

Risks.

And now he realized he had ignored every warning sign because he wanted the fantasy Vanessa represented.

A fresh start.

A younger woman.

A life without reminders of struggle.

But the documents told another story.

The first page showed Vanessa’s original hiring file.

Adrian remembered that day.

Three years earlier.

His company was expanding quickly.

They needed someone to manage partnerships with major investors.

Vanessa arrived for an interview wearing a simple gray suit.

She was confident.

Intelligent.

Prepared.

She knew everything about his company.

At the time, he thought it showed dedication.

Now he wondered how much research she had done before ever meeting him.

The second page showed a list of meetings.

Several were marked with notes.

Private dinner.

Investor event.

Casual conversation.

Each moment where Vanessa slowly became closer to him.

Claire looked over his shoulder.

“She planned every step.”

Adrian shook his head.

“I don’t understand.”

Claire pointed to one document.

“Look.”

It was an email.

Not sent from Vanessa.

But about Vanessa.

A private message between two executives.

One line stood out.

“She is unusually interested in Hale personally, not professionally.”

Adrian felt sick.

“She knew people noticed?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

Claire looked at him.

“Would you have listened?”

The question hurt.

Because he knew the answer.

No.

He would not have.

He was too proud.

Too convinced.

He had already decided Vanessa represented the future.

Anyone who questioned her became an enemy.

Even Claire.

Especially Claire.

That evening, Adrian sat alone in the living room.

Claire was resting in the bedroom.

He had insisted she sleep.

She had argued.

He had won.

A strange thing happened while he sat there.

He realized he had not thought about his company once all day.

Not about investors.

Not about deals.

Not about his reputation.

Only Claire.

Only the woman who had almost died without him knowing.

His phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

We need to talk. Alone.

Adrian stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

Don’t make a mistake because you feel guilty.

His expression changed.

Because that sentence revealed something.

Vanessa knew exactly what he was feeling.

Not concern.

Control.

She knew how to manipulate his emotions.

The same way she had before.

Adrian typed one response.

Tomorrow. My office.

The next morning, Adrian arrived at Hale Urban Systems.

Employees greeted him as usual.

“Good morning, Mr. Hale.”

“Congratulations on the new expansion.”

“Great presentation yesterday.”

Nobody knew.

Nobody knew the man they admired had spent the night sitting beside his sick ex-wife.

Nobody knew his perfect life was collapsing.

He entered his office.

And stopped.

Vanessa was already there.

She sat across from his desk.

Waiting.

“You’re early,” Adrian said.

She smiled.

“You’re predictable.”

The words were small.

But they bothered him.

Because Claire had said something similar once.

Years ago.

“You always think you’re unpredictable, Adrian. But I know you better than anyone.”

At the time, he laughed.

Now he understood.

Vanessa never truly knew him.

She studied him.

There was a difference.

“What is this?” Adrian asked, holding up the folder.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But he noticed.

Fear.

A tiny flash.

Gone almost immediately.

“Where did you get that?”

Adrian sat down.

“So you recognize it.”

Vanessa crossed her legs.

“I recognize Claire’s handwriting.”

“Don’t.”

His voice became colder.

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Turn this around.”

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

Adrian opened the folder.

“Did you know about Claire’s heart condition?”

Silence.

Then Vanessa sighed.

“I knew she was sick.”

The answer was worse than he expected.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Because I knew what would happen.”

“What?”

“You would go back to her.”

The honesty shocked him.

She did not deny it.

She did not pretend.

She simply admitted it.

Adrian stared at her.

“You knew she needed me.”

“Yes.”

“And you kept me away.”

Vanessa stood.

“Adrian, listen to yourself.”

Her voice became emotional.

“You’re blaming me because you feel guilty.”

“Did you or did you not know?”

She looked at him.

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

“I knew.”

The confession felt like a door closing.

Adrian leaned back slowly.

“How long?”

“Before the gala.”

“Before I humiliated her?”

Vanessa said nothing.

That was the answer.

His jaw tightened.

“You watched me do that.”

“I was trying to protect us.”

“Us?”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Yes.”

Her expression hardened.

“You finally had the life you deserved.”

Adrian looked at her.

“The life I deserved?”

“Yes.”

She pointed toward the window.

“The company. The money. The recognition. Everything you built.”

Then she said the sentence that revealed everything.

“Claire belonged to the old Adrian.”

Adrian felt something inside him break.

Because that was exactly what he had believed.

The same cruel idea.

The same lie.

That Claire represented his past.

And Vanessa represented his future.

But now he saw the truth.

Claire was not the past.

She was the foundation.

Without her, there would be no future.

Before Adrian could respond, his assistant called.

“Mr. Hale?”

“What?”

“There’s a problem.”

“What kind?”

A pause.

“The board discovered unusual financial activity connected to one of the partnership accounts.”

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But enough.

“What activity?”

“We’re still investigating.”

The call ended.

Adrian slowly placed the phone down.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“You weren’t just trying to replace Claire.”

Vanessa said nothing.

“You were trying to take everything.”

Her silence confirmed it.

And for the first time in months…

Adrian felt something stronger than guilt.

He felt betrayal.

The same betrayal Claire had felt.

Only now he understood how painful it was.

That night, Adrian returned to Claire’s apartment.

She was sitting near the window, looking at the city.

“How did it go?”

He sat beside her.

“She admitted it.”

Claire looked at him.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

A long silence followed.

Then Adrian asked:

“Why didn’t you hate me?”

Claire looked confused.

“What?”

“After everything I did.”

She looked down.

“I did hate you.”

The honesty surprised him.

“For a while.”

“Why didn’t you show me?”

A small sad smile appeared.

“Because hate takes energy.”

She touched her wedding ring.

“And I was using mine to survive.”

The words stayed with him.

Because Claire had not been waiting for him.

She had been fighting.

Alone.

And Adrian finally understood the worst truth of all.

He did not lose Claire because Vanessa stole her.

He lost Claire because he chose to let go.

Then his phone rang.

A lawyer.

The company’s legal department.

“Mr. Hale, we found something else.”

Adrian stood.

“What?”

The lawyer’s voice was serious.

“Vanessa wasn’t only manipulating your personal life.”

A pause.

“She has been moving company assets.”

Adrian looked at Claire.

And both of them understood.

This was no longer about a marriage.

May you like

It was about everything Adrian built.

And the woman he almost lost might be the only person who could help him save it.
