Chapter 4 - The Folder Hidden Behind the Kitchen Vent

Adrian did not sleep that night.
He sat beside Claire’s hospital bed until the morning light slowly pushed through the windows.
The city outside continued moving.
Cars traveled through crowded streets.
People rushed to meetings.
Businesses opened.
The world continued as if nothing had changed.
But Adrian Hale felt like his entire life had stopped.
Because one sentence kept repeating inside his mind.
Vanessa knew before you did.
He had replayed Claire’s words dozens of times.
Maybe he misunderstood.
Maybe Claire was confused because of the medication.
Maybe the stress had affected her memory.
But deep down, he already knew.
Claire had never been careless with words.
She was the person who chose silence over unnecessary cruelty.
If she said Vanessa knew, there was a reason.
A nurse entered the room early that morning.
“Mr. Hale?”
Adrian looked up.
“Yes?”
“She’s awake.”
He immediately stood.
“Can I see her?”
The nurse nodded.
“But keep it calm. She needs rest.”
Adrian entered the room.
Claire was sitting slightly upright, looking out the window.
For a moment, he saw the woman from years ago.
The woman who drank coffee on their tiny balcony every Sunday morning.
The woman who laughed when they had almost no money.
The woman who believed love was something you protected, not something you replaced.
Then she turned toward him.
And he saw the distance.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Something worse.
A wall.
“How long have you known?” Adrian asked.
Claire looked down.
“Known what?”
“That Vanessa knew about your condition.”
A long silence followed.
Then Claire sighed.
“About two weeks.”
Adrian felt a sharp pain in his chest.
“Two weeks?”
Claire nodded.
“She found out before the gala.”
“How?”
Claire looked toward the window.
“Because she was the one who saw the medical documents.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“What?”
Two weeks earlier.
Before the gala.
Before Adrian publicly chose Vanessa.
Before everything collapsed.
Claire had been sitting in her car outside the hospital.
She had just finished another appointment.
Her diagnosis was still fresh.
Her hands trembled as she held the medical folder.
She had spent twenty minutes trying to convince herself to call Adrian.
Twenty minutes staring at his name.
Twenty minutes remembering the last conversation they had.
Finally, she pressed the call button.
It rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then voicemail.
Claire closed her eyes.
She tried again.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
She knew he was busy.
At least that was what she told herself.
She placed the phone down.
Then someone knocked on her car window.
Claire looked up.
It was Vanessa.
At first, Claire was confused.
“What are you doing here?”
Vanessa smiled.
Not warmly.
Politely.
“I could ask you the same thing.”
Claire lowered the window slightly.
“This is private.”
Vanessa looked at the folder in Claire’s hand.
Then she looked at Claire’s face.
“You should be careful with things like that.”
Claire’s expression changed.
“What?”
Vanessa pointed toward the folder.
“The papers.”
A cold feeling moved through Claire.
“You saw those?”
“I saw enough.”
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
The parking lot suddenly felt empty.
Too empty.
“You went through my things?”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Don’t make it sound dramatic.”
Claire stared at her.
“You had no right.”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“You know what’s interesting?”
Claire said nothing.
“Adrian spends his entire life trying to escape weakness.”
The words felt cruel.
“And now you have become exactly what he fears.”
Claire’s eyes hardened.
“You don’t know him.”
Vanessa smiled.
“I know him better than you think.”
That sentence stayed with Claire.
Because it was not just arrogance.
There was confidence behind it.
The confidence of someone who believed she had already won.
“You should tell him,” Vanessa said.
Claire looked away.
“I will.”
“When?”
Claire did not answer.
Because she knew the truth.
She had planned to tell him at the gala.
She wanted one final chance.
One honest conversation.
Vanessa watched her carefully.
Then she said:
“You know he won’t choose this life.”
Claire looked back.
“What?”
“Adrian wants a future. Not a burden.”
The word hit harder than Vanessa probably realized.
Burden.
Claire had spent years being Adrian’s support.
Now someone was telling her she had become something he needed to escape.
Vanessa stepped away.
“Do yourself a favor.”
She adjusted her coat.
“Don’t make him feel guilty.”
Then she walked away.
Leaving Claire alone with her diagnosis.
And her broken heart.
Back in the hospital room, Adrian could barely speak.
“She said that to you?”
Claire nodded.
“She wanted me to disappear.”
Adrian shook his head.
“No.”
Claire looked at him.
“No?”
“No. Vanessa wouldn’t…”
He stopped.
Because even saying the words felt impossible.
Wouldn’t what?
Manipulate?
Lie?
Use people?
He suddenly remembered small moments.
The way Vanessa always appeared whenever Claire called.
The way she knew details she should not know.
The way she encouraged him to distance himself.
The way she always turned Claire into the problem.
Adrian sat down slowly.
“She knew.”
Claire watched him.
“Yes.”
“And she still let me leave.”
“Yes.”
The silence was painful.
Adrian covered his face with his hands.
For years, he thought Vanessa represented freedom.
A new life.
A new beginning.
But what if she had simply been standing there while he destroyed the old one?
“What else don’t I know?” he whispered.
Claire looked at him.
“There’s more.”
Adrian raised his head.
“What?”
“The folder.”
The memory returned.
Kitchen vent.
Hidden folder.
“Why is there a folder in your apartment?”
Claire hesitated.
“Because I found something.”
“What?”
She looked at him.
“Something about Vanessa.”
After Claire was discharged from the hospital two days later, Adrian insisted on taking her home.
She resisted.
“I can call a taxi.”
“No.”
The answer came too quickly.
Claire looked at him.
Adrian softened his voice.
“Please.”
That word surprised her.
Because Adrian Hale rarely asked.
He commanded.
He negotiated.
He convinced.
But he did not ask.
Finally, she nodded.
The drive was quiet.
Not uncomfortable.
Just unfamiliar.
They had spent fourteen years filling silence with conversation.
Now silence had become the only honest thing between them.
When they reached the apartment, Adrian immediately noticed how small it was.
Not poor.
Just simple.
A place built for one person.
Not two.
He looked around.
And realized something.
Claire had created a life where she no longer expected him.
That hurt more than anger would have.
“Where is the vent?” Adrian asked.
Claire pointed toward the kitchen.
He opened the cabinet.
Removed the cover.
And froze.
Behind it was a small folder wrapped in plastic.
He pulled it out carefully.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Printed emails.
And handwritten notes.
Adrian’s expression changed as he read the first page.
His name appeared.
Then Vanessa’s.
Then several dates.
“What is this?”
Claire stood behind him.
“The reason I came to the gala.”
Adrian turned the page.
And his face slowly lost all color.
Because the documents showed something impossible.
Vanessa had not accidentally entered his life.
She had planned it.
The first meeting.
The business partnership.
The private conversations.
The moments when Adrian began believing Claire was holding him back.
Everything connected.
A carefully designed pattern.
Adrian looked at Claire.
“How did you get this?”
Claire swallowed.
“Because Vanessa made one mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“She thought I was too hurt to notice.”
Adrian looked back at the documents.
For the first time, he understood.
Vanessa did not just want him.
She wanted everything that came with him.
His company.
His reputation.
His money.
His future.
And Claire?
Claire had been the only obstacle.
Adrian slowly sat down.
The woman he left for someone younger was not his escape.
She was his trap.
Then his phone rang.
The screen showed Vanessa’s name.
Adrian stared at it.
Claire watched him.
“Are you going to answer?”
He looked at the phone.
Then at the folder.
Then at the woman who had almost died alone.
Finally, he answered.
“Hello, Vanessa.”
Her voice came immediately.
“Adrian. I was worried about you.”
He said nothing.
She continued.
“Are you with Claire?”
The question was casual.
Too casual.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“How did you know I was here?”
Silence.
Only for a second.
But enough.
Enough for him to know.
Vanessa had been watching.
Then she spoke softly.
“You should be careful who you trust.”
Adrian looked at Claire.
And for the first time in his life…
May you like
he realized Vanessa’s warning was not about Claire.
It was about herself.
