Chapter 1 - The Night He Chose Another Woman

By the time Adrian Hale realized he had destroyed the only person who truly loved him, the world had already seen him as a winner.
The magazines called him brilliant.
Investors called him unstoppable.
Young entrepreneurs quoted his speeches about ambition, sacrifice, and success.
But nobody knew the truth about Adrian Hale.
Nobody knew that before the expensive suits, before the luxury apartment overlooking the city, before the six-hundred-million-dollar company, there had been a tiny apartment with broken heating, unpaid bills, and a woman named Claire who believed in him when even he did not believe in himself.
Nobody knew that the empire everyone admired had been built on the quiet sacrifices of the woman he later abandoned.
And nobody knew that on the night Adrian celebrated becoming the man everyone wanted to meet, he lost the woman who had loved him before anyone knew his name.
The ballroom of the Fairmont Grand Hotel was glowing with golden light.
Crystal chandeliers hung above hundreds of guests. Executives, investors, celebrities, and wealthy business owners filled the room, all gathered to celebrate the newest achievement of Hale Urban Systems.
Adrian stood near the center of it all.
Forty years old.
Successful.
Confident.
A man who had finally escaped the fear that had followed him since childhood.
His navy suit was perfectly tailored. His watch cost more than some people’s cars. His smile appeared effortless.
And standing beside him was Vanessa Cross.
Thirty-one years old.
Beautiful.
Elegant.
Confident.
The woman everyone in the room noticed.
Vanessa was Adrian’s director of strategic partnerships, but lately, people had started whispering that she was much more than that.
Adrian heard the whispers.
He simply pretended not to.
Because admitting the truth meant admitting something he did not want to face.
He had crossed a line.
A line that once seemed impossible to cross.
A line that involved the woman waiting at home for him.
Claire.
His wife of fourteen years.
The woman who knew him before the world cared about him.
The woman who had seen him fail.
The woman who had stayed when leaving would have been easier.
Adrian looked across the ballroom as Vanessa laughed at something an investor said.
“You know,” Vanessa whispered, leaning closer, “this is the first time I’ve seen you completely relaxed.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
“You’re not trying to prove anything anymore.”
She smiled.
“You already won.”
Those words affected him more than he wanted to admit.
Because deep down, Adrian still felt like the frightened young man who had once sat alone in a cheap apartment, staring at rejection letters from banks and wondering if he had ruined his future.
Claire had been there during those nights.
She had made coffee at midnight.
She had encouraged him when his first business partner betrayed him.
She had sold her mother’s piano to help pay his company expenses.
She had believed in a dream nobody else could see.
But somewhere along the way, Adrian started seeing Claire as a reminder of the man he used to be.
And he hated that.
Not because she had done anything wrong.
But because she remembered everything.
The struggles.
The failures.
The fear.
And Adrian had become obsessed with becoming someone new.
Someone powerful.
Someone admired.
Someone who never had to feel small again.
Then Claire walked into the ballroom.
And suddenly, the entire room felt quieter.
She was not dressed like the women surrounding Adrian.
She wore a simple navy dress.
The same dress she had worn two years earlier when Adrian received his first major award.
Her blonde hair was loosely styled.
Her face looked tired.
Paler than usual.
But Adrian noticed none of that.
The only thing he noticed was that she looked out of place.
And that thought immediately made him ashamed.
Claire searched the room until she found him.
For a moment, Adrian saw the woman he married.
Not the woman he had started avoiding.
Not the person he had convinced himself was holding him back.
The woman who had held his hand when nobody else believed in him.
She smiled slightly.
A small, hopeful smile.
Then she walked toward him.
“Adrian.”
Her voice was soft.
He immediately looked uncomfortable.
“Claire.”
Vanessa glanced between them.
“Oh.”
A small smile appeared on her face.
“So you’re Claire.”
The way she said it made Adrian’s stomach tighten.
Not rude.
Not openly hostile.
Just perfectly polite in a way that felt worse.
Claire looked at Vanessa.
Then at Adrian.
“I’ve been calling you.”
Adrian checked his phone.
Twenty-seven missed calls.
His expression changed for half a second.
Then disappeared.
“We’re in the middle of something.”
Claire stared at him.
“I know.”
“Then why are you here?”
The question hurt more than he realized.
Because Claire had not come to ruin his night.
She had not come to accuse him.
She had not come to expose Vanessa.
She had come because eleven days earlier, a doctor had told her something that changed everything.
Something she was terrified to face alone.
But Adrian did not know.
He only saw inconvenience.
“I needed to talk to you.”
“Claire…”
His voice carried irritation.
Several people nearby started pretending not to listen.
She lowered her voice.
“It’s important.”
Vanessa touched Adrian’s arm.
“Maybe we should find somewhere private.”
Claire looked at that hand.
A simple gesture.
But it said everything.
Adrian noticed.
And still, he did nothing.
That was the moment Claire understood.
Not because Vanessa was there.
Not because of the rumors.
Not even because Adrian looked at another woman differently.
It was because he allowed another woman to make her feel like a stranger in her own marriage.
“I’m your wife,” Claire whispered.
Adrian sighed.
“Don’t do this here.”
Her eyes changed.
The sadness became something deeper.
Something colder.
“I’m not doing anything.”
“Then stop making everything complicated.”
The sentence hung between them.
Claire stared at him.
Everything complicated.
Fourteen years of marriage.
Fourteen years of sacrifice.
Fourteen years of standing beside him.
Now reduced to something complicated.
A tear almost appeared in her eye.
But she refused to let it fall.
“I sold my mother’s piano for you.”
Adrian’s face tightened.
“Claire.”
“I worked three jobs when your company almost collapsed.”
“Not here.”
“I believed in you when nobody else did.”
The room became quieter.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Maybe we should give her some space.”
Claire turned toward her.
“You don’t know anything about us.”
Vanessa smiled politely.
“Maybe not.”
Then she looked at Adrian.
“But I know when someone is making your life harder.”
Those words hit Claire.
Because Adrian did not reject them.
He did not defend her.
He simply stood there.
Silent.
And sometimes silence was the cruelest answer.
Claire looked at him one last time.
“When did success start making you ashamed of me?”
For one second, Adrian almost broke.
Because the question was too accurate.
But pride was stronger.
“The life I have now is different.”
Claire nodded slowly.
Different.
That was the word.
Not better.
Different.
She swallowed.
“I understand.”
Then she turned and walked away.
Alone.
No scene.
No shouting.
No tears.
Just a woman leaving the man she had spent fourteen years building.
Adrian watched her disappear through the ballroom doors.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“You did the right thing.”
But Adrian did not answer.
Because deep inside, a terrifying thought appeared.
What if he had just thrown away the only person who never cared about what he could provide?
Outside the hotel, Claire sat in her car.
Her hands trembled.
Not from anger.
Not from humiliation.
From fear.
She opened the medical folder beside her.
Inside was the diagnosis.
Advanced dilated cardiomyopathy.
Her heart was failing.
She had planned to tell Adrian tonight.
She had planned to say:
I’m scared.
I need you.
Please come home.
Instead, she drove away carrying the truth alone.
And she had no idea that three months later, Adrian Hale would be the one desperately begging her not to leave.
May you like
Because the night he chose another woman…
was the night he lost the woman who had saved him.
