Chapter 3 - The Brother Dante Buried

Ruby whispered, "You said you killed him."
Dante stared at the monitor.
"I did."
Outside the gates, Lorenzo Moretti smiled directly into the security camera.
Eight years after Dante had supposedly killed his brother, Lorenzo was standing at their front gate wearing a charcoal suit and holding a white rose.
Ruby couldn't look away.
The resemblance was unmistakable.
Same broad shoulders.
Same severe cheekbones.
Same eyes.
But where Dante's presence felt controlled, Lorenzo's seemed theatrical.
He enjoyed being watched.
Marco grabbed his phone.
"Snipers?"
"Don't."
Everyone turned toward Dante.
Marco frowned.
"He's outside the perimeter."
"And that's exactly where he wants us to shoot him."
Ruby looked at Dante.
"You think it's a trap?"
"I know Lorenzo."
"You thought he was dead."
Dante's eyes remained on the screen.
"Apparently I didn't know him well enough."
Lorenzo lifted the rose.
Then he placed it against the iron gate.
He turned and walked toward a black sedan.
Ruby stepped closer to the monitor.
"That's it?"
Dante's gaze narrowed.
"No."
The security feed zoomed in.
Something had been tied to the rose.
An envelope.
Marco sent two men.
They returned minutes later.
One carried a metal evidence case containing the envelope.
Dante opened it with gloves.
Inside was a photograph.
Ruby.
Age twenty-two.
Unconscious.
Lying in a hospital bed she didn't recognize.
Her face drained.
"What is that?"
Dante turned the picture over.
Five words had been written in black ink.
SHE STILL DOESN'T REMEMBER EVERYTHING.
Ruby felt sick.
"What did he do to me?"
Dante didn't answer.
"What did your brother do?"
"I don't know everything."
"Then tell me what you know."
Dante ordered everyone except Marco out.
Ruby remained standing.
Dante didn't argue.
Maybe he finally understood that he no longer had the right.
He poured water into a glass.
Ruby didn't take it.
"Eight years ago," he began, "Lorenzo controlled part of the Moretti organization."
Ruby listened.
"He was ambitious. Reckless. He wanted legitimacy."
"Meaning?"
"Companies that couldn't be connected to our name."
"Like Gallagher Holdings."
"Yes."
Her stomach turned.
"Lorenzo targeted my father?"
"Patrick refused him."
"So Lorenzo targeted me."
Dante nodded.
"His men followed you in Florence."
Ruby closed her eyes.
Fragments stirred.
A hotel elevator.
A black car.
A man's hand around her arm.
Then nothing.
She opened her eyes quickly.
"I remember an elevator."
Dante's face tightened.
"Don't force it."
"Stop telling me what to do."
He fell silent.
Ruby breathed slowly.
"What happened next?"
"Your father discovered the attempt. He thought I had authorized it."
"And he came after you."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell him the truth?"
"I did."
"But he still hated you."
"He didn't hate me."
Ruby stared.
Dante looked almost amused.
"Patrick Gallagher hated very few people. He distrusted me. That's different."
"You make him sound like you knew him well."
"I did."
That surprised her.
"How well?"
Dante hesitated.
"After Lorenzo disappeared, your father and I worked together."
Ruby felt betrayed all over again.
"For eight years?"
"Off and on."
"And he never told me."
"He wanted you outside our world."
"Your world."
Dante's expression sharpened.
"Your father was closer to this world than you think."
Ruby shook her head.
"My father ran shipping companies."
"Exactly."
The meaning landed slowly.
Ports.
Cargo.
International routes.
Warehouses.
Customs contacts.
Her father controlled infrastructure worth billions.
"He was involved with organized crime?"
"No."
Dante's answer came immediately.
"He spent years trying to stop people from using Gallagher routes for trafficking."
Ruby frowned.
"What kind?"
"Weapons. Narcotics. People."
Her stomach turned.
"Patrick discovered someone inside his company was assisting them."
"The ledger."
Dante nodded.
"He began building a private record of every transaction."
"And that's why he died."
"I believe so."
Ruby looked at him.
"Was our marriage really part of his plan?"
Dante's eyes shifted.
"Your father wanted Gallagher Holdings protected if anything happened to him."
"By giving it to you?"
"Not exactly."
Dante walked to a locked cabinet.
He removed another folder.
Ruby laughed bitterly.
"How many folders about my life do you have?"
"Too many."
At least he didn't deny it.
He opened the folder.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Ruby recognized her father's writing immediately.
Dante gave it to her.
Ruby,
If you're reading this, something has gone wrong.
You will be angry with me.
You should be.
I have kept you away from truths that belonged to you because I believed ignorance was protection.
I was wrong.
Ruby's eyes filled.
She continued.
If Gallagher Holdings becomes vulnerable, Dante Moretti has authority to protect the company temporarily.
Temporarily.
He does not own it.
He does not own you.
If that stubborn son of a gun ever forgets either fact, remind him I threatened to shoot him once and remain perfectly willing to haunt him.
A broken laugh escaped Ruby.
Dante almost smiled.
She continued reading.
There may come a time when Dante proposes a legal union to shield your inheritance from hostile acquisition.
If he does, understand this:
I approved the strategy.
I did not approve the man.
Make him earn that part.
Ruby stopped.
She looked up.
"You proposed because my father told you to?"
"No."
"But he knew you might."
"Patrick understood the options."
"What options?"
"Marriage created protections around Gallagher shares that a conventional trust couldn't."
"So the contract was real."
"Yes."
"And the acquisition plan?"
"Real."
Her chest tightened.
Dante added, "But not mine."
Ruby looked at the label.
Gallagher Acquisition and Liquidation.
"Whose?"
"Lorenzo's original proposal from eight years ago."
Ruby stared at him.
"Why did you keep it?"
"Evidence."
"Why was it in your desk beside our marriage contract?"
Dante looked toward Marco.
Marco cleared his throat.
"I moved several historical files upstairs after an attempted breach last week."
Ruby rounded on him.
"Last week?"
Marco regretted speaking instantly.
Ruby looked back at Dante.
"There was a breach?"
"Someone accessed archived company records."
"And you didn't tell me."
"I didn't know you were involved."
"My name is on the folder!"
Dante stepped closer.
"You were already afraid."
"I'm more afraid when everyone around me is lying."
His face tightened.
"You're right."
Ruby stopped.
She hadn't expected that.
Dante took another step, carefully.
"You're right."
His voice was quieter.
"I spent years believing secrecy was the same as protection."
Ruby's eyes burned.
"My father did too."
"Yes."
"And now he's dead."
Dante absorbed that without flinching.
Ruby looked back at the letter.
There was another paragraph.
She read it aloud.
"One last thing. If Lorenzo Moretti is ever seen again, do not trust anyone who tells you he came back for revenge."
Ruby frowned.
She looked at Dante.
He took the letter.
Below it, Patrick had written:
He will come back for what he believes Ruby took from him.
Ruby stared at the words.
"What did I take from Lorenzo?"
Dante's face went still.
"I don't know."
Marco's phone vibrated.
He read the message.
His expression darkened.
"What?"
Dante asked.
"We traced the vehicle."
"And?"
"It belongs to Gallagher Holdings."
Ruby's breath caught.
"Who authorized it?"
Marco looked at her.
"Your uncle."
Ruby froze.
Her father's younger brother, Charles Gallagher, had served as interim chairman after Patrick's death.
He had also walked Ruby down the aisle at her wedding.
Dante grabbed his jacket.
"Where is Charles?"
Marco checked his phone.
"According to his driver, at the Gallagher Foundation gala."
Ruby stood.
"I'm coming."
"No."
She gave Dante a look.
He sighed.
"Fine."
Twenty minutes later, their convoy entered downtown.
The gala occupied the top floor of the Gallagher Center.
Hundreds of guests filled the ballroom.
Ruby entered beside Dante.
Conversation faded.
Charles Gallagher stood near the stage.
He saw Ruby.
Then Dante.
His face changed.
Ruby walked directly toward him.
"Uncle Charles."
"Ruby."
He forced a smile.
"What a surprise."
Dante stood behind her.
Ruby held up the photograph Lorenzo had left.
"Where is he?"
Charles stared at it.
His hand began shaking.
Ruby noticed.
"You know he's alive."
Charles looked around.
"Not here."
"Then where?"
His voice dropped.
"Your father made me promise."
"Promise what?"
"That I would keep you away from Dante if Lorenzo returned."
Ruby glanced at her husband.
"Why?"
Charles stared at Dante with genuine fear.
"Because Dante doesn't know the truth."
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"What truth?"
Charles reached inside his jacket.
Marco moved instantly.
But Charles only withdrew an old photograph.
He handed it to Ruby.
It showed Patrick Gallagher.
Charles.
A younger Dante.
And a young woman Ruby didn't recognize.
The woman was holding a baby.
Ruby turned the photograph over.
A date.
Twenty-nine years ago.
And three names.
Patrick.
Elena.
Ruby.
Ruby's hands went numb.
"Who is Elena?"
Charles stared at her.
Then he said something that made Dante go completely still.
"Your mother."
Ruby shook her head.
"My mother was Catherine Gallagher."
Charles's eyes filled with tears.
"Catherine raised you."
Ruby stepped backward.
The ballroom disappeared around her.
"No."
Charles reached for her.
"Ruby—"
"No."
Dante caught her as she stumbled.
Then a voice came through the ballroom speakers.
Slow applause.
Everyone turned.
The giant screen behind the stage flickered to life.
Lorenzo appeared.
He was smiling.
May you like
"Now that the family reunion has begun," he said, "perhaps someone should finally tell Ruby who her father really was."
The screen went black.
