Chapter 1 - The Folder With My Name

Ruby Gallagher held up the folder and whispered, "Tell me this isn't what I think it is."
Dante Moretti entered the study and saw the marriage contract in her hand.
A handwritten number had been added beneath Ruby's signature.
$80,000,000.
This had never been just a marriage.
Ruby stared at the number until the ink blurred behind her tears.
Six months.
For six months, she had slept beside Dante Moretti.
She had shared breakfast with him when his phone never stopped ringing. She had waited through late-night meetings she wasn't allowed to attend. She had learned that he drank espresso without sugar, hated lilies because they reminded him of funerals, and woke at four in the morning whenever thunderstorms rolled over the city.
She had learned the scars on his shoulders.
She had learned the rare sound of his laugh.
She had learned exactly how his expression changed when someone threatened her.
And now she was learning what she had apparently been worth all along.
Eighty million dollars.
Ruby slowly looked up.
Dante stood ten feet away from her in the doorway of his private study.
He was still wearing the white shirt and black waistcoat he had worn to dinner. The top buttons were open, exposing the thin silver chain at his throat. His silver-gray hair had fallen slightly out of place, but there was nothing casual about the way he watched her.
Behind him stood Marco Bellini, Dante's chief security officer.
Neither man spoke.
Ruby lifted the folder.
"What is this?"
Dante's eyes moved to the label.
GALLAGHER ACQUISITION AND LIQUIDATION.
Something changed in his face.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
That hurt worse.
Ruby laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
"You know exactly what this is."
"Ruby."
"No."
She backed away when he took one step toward her.
"Don't say my name like that."
Dante stopped.
Ruby pulled the first document from the folder.
It contained financial projections.
Gallagher Shipping.
Gallagher Development.
Gallagher Coastal Holdings.
Companies her late father had spent forty years building.
Beside each company were columns showing debts, assets, voting rights, and liquidation values.
And beside her own name were three words.
Primary inheritance conduit.
She swallowed.
Her father, Patrick Gallagher, had died unexpectedly eight months earlier.
Two months after his death, Ruby had married Dante.
At the time, she had believed their marriage had been strange but sincere.
Their families had known each other for years.
Dante had protected her during the chaos following her father's death.
When creditors began circling Gallagher Holdings, Dante had stepped in.
When reporters camped outside her apartment, Dante had moved her into his estate.
When her father's former partners questioned her ability to control the company, Dante had stood beside her at the board meeting and said five words that had silenced everyone.
"She speaks for the Gallaghers."
Ruby had fallen in love with him because she believed that beneath the terrifying reputation was a man who had chosen to protect her.
Now the documents suggested something else.
"You married me for my father's companies."
Dante's jaw tightened.
"It's more complicated."
"That's what men say when the simple explanation makes them look disgusting."
"Ruby."
"Did you know?"
His silence lasted half a second too long.
Ruby's face crumpled.
"You knew."
"I knew a contract existed."
Her eyes filled.
"And you still married me."
"Yes."
The answer landed harder than shouting would have.
Ruby looked down.
Another document contained a timeline.
Phase One: Marriage.
Phase Two: Consolidation.
Phase Three: Transfer of controlling assets.
Phase Four: Liquidation of redundant Gallagher interests.
She gripped the desk.
"Redundant."
Dante stepped closer.
"That plan was never executed."
"But it was written."
"Before I married you."
"By whom?"
Dante didn't answer.
Ruby looked at Marco.
The security chief lowered his eyes.
That told her enough.
Everyone knew something.
Except her.
She pulled another sheet from the folder.
Her father's signature appeared at the bottom.
Ruby froze.
"No."
The document shook in her hand.
Patrick Gallagher had apparently signed a preliminary agreement authorizing negotiations with the Moretti organization.
She turned the page.
There was another signature.
Dante Moretti.
Dated three weeks before Patrick Gallagher died.
Ruby's breath vanished.
"You were negotiating for my father's company while he was alive."
Dante's expression hardened.
"Your father came to me."
"For what?"
"Protection."
"From who?"
Dante looked toward Marco.
Ruby slammed the folder onto the desk.
"Stop looking at him! Look at me!"
Dante did.
Ruby's tears finally spilled.
"You stood beside me at my father's funeral."
"I did."
"You held me while I cried."
"Yes."
"You proposed four weeks later."
"Ruby—"
"Was that part of the schedule?"
"No."
"Then tell me what was."
Dante stepped forward.
She backed away again.
His hands dropped immediately.
He looked almost wounded by her fear.
Ruby noticed.
For one terrible second, she wanted to comfort him.
That made her hate herself.
"I loved you," she whispered.
Dante's control cracked.
"Ruby."
"I loved you when everyone told me not to."
His eyes darkened.
"I never asked you to defend me."
"No. You just gave me reasons to."
She wiped her cheek.
"I thought you were different with me."
"I am."
"Then tell me why there's a dollar amount under my name."
Dante looked at the contract.
For the first time since entering the room, he seemed uncertain.
"That number wasn't payment for you."
"What was it?"
"Your protection value."
She stared.
He continued.
"If Gallagher Holdings collapsed, eighty million was the minimum reserve required to protect every asset your father wanted left untouched."
Ruby shook her head.
"That doesn't even make sense."
"It will."
"When?"
"When I can explain everything without putting you in more danger."
She laughed bitterly.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The secret."
Dante's brow furrowed.
"You always have one more secret."
He said nothing.
Ruby stepped toward him.
Six months ago, she would have been intimidated by the way men twice her size moved out of Dante's path.
Tonight, she felt nothing but exhaustion.
"Do you love me?"
Dante's expression shifted.
Ruby waited.
He had said many things during their marriage.
You're safe.
Stay behind me.
Call me when you arrive.
Don't leave without security.
Come home.
He had never said those three words.
She realized that now.
"Do you love me?"
His eyes held hers.
"Ruby—"
She nodded.
Very slowly.
"That's what I thought."
She walked past him.
Dante caught her wrist.
Not hard.
Almost desperately.
Ruby looked at his hand.
He released her immediately.
"Don't leave tonight."
"Why?"
"Because someone may be watching the estate."
"Someone is always watching this estate."
"Not like this."
Ruby stared at him.
Another mystery.
Another warning.
Another reason she was expected to obey without understanding.
She turned away.
Marco moved aside as she passed.
The maid, Sofia, stood farther down the hallway with both hands pressed against her mouth.
Ruby didn't look at anyone.
Her satin gown whispered over the marble floor as she walked toward the grand staircase.
Behind her, Dante said her name.
She kept walking.
"Ruby."
She stopped.
Not because she had forgiven him.
Because his voice sounded different.
She turned halfway.
Dante stood beneath the chandelier.
In his hand was the marriage contract.
He looked at it.
Then at her.
"If you leave this house tonight, I can't guarantee they'll let you come back."
Ruby's blood went cold.
"Who?"
Dante's gaze shifted toward the tall windows.
Marco suddenly reached beneath his jacket.
Every light in the east wing went out.
Sofia screamed.
A gunshot cracked somewhere beyond the doors.
Dante moved toward Ruby.
May you like
Then another shot shattered the window beside her.
And from the darkness outside, someone shouted her father's name.
