Chapter 4 - The Man Behind Grant

The man in the photograph was Richard Vale, Bennett Meridian's chief financial officer.
He had worked beside Caroline's father for fourteen years.
He had hugged Caroline at William's funeral.
He had told her Grant was "good for her."
Now investigators discovered why.
Richard had approved every suspicious transfer connected to Grant.
The conspiracy wasn't a marriage gone wrong.
It was an organized theft.
William's company moved billions in cargo annually. Richard had been diverting money through shell companies for years.
Grant became useful because marriage gave him access to Caroline.
Vanessa became useful because she forged documents.
And Caroline became dangerous when she inherited voting control.
Her death would transfer much of her estate to Grant.
Grant could then vote with Richard.
They would control Bennett Meridian.
The insurance money was only a bonus.
Fifty million dollars had seemed enormous.
Now Caroline understood it was almost irrelevant.
The real prize was her father's company.
Police reached headquarters.
Daniel was gone.
Blood was found near William's office.
No body.
No gun.
Richard was gone too.
Grant refused to speak.
Vanessa panicked.
Her immunity negotiations accelerated.
She finally admitted Richard had ordered Grant to "solve the Caroline problem."
Caroline asked Reyes to play the statement twice.
"Ordered?"
"That's her word."
"So Grant killed my father?"
"We don't know."
They did know Richard had been at the mountain where William died.
Cell-tower records proved it.
Grant's phone placed him there too.
Caroline closed her eyes.
Her father's final hours were becoming visible.
He discovered the theft.
He confronted Richard.
Grant helped silence him.
Then Grant waited for Caroline to inherit.
He married the heir.
And when Caroline refused to surrender control, he attempted to kill her too.
Thomas became Caroline's shield through the days that followed.
Not because she was helpless.
Because she had a newborn daughter and stitches and cracked ribs and a company under attack.
He helped her separate survival from revenge.
"You don't need to chase them," he told her. "Make them come to you."
Caroline understood.
Richard wanted Bennett Meridian.
So she returned.
Ten days after Hope's birth, Caroline entered company headquarters.
Reporters filled the sidewalk.
Employees stood in the lobby.
Caroline wore a navy suit and carried her daughter.
Thomas walked beside her.
The board assembled upstairs.
Richard's chair was empty.
Caroline took her father's seat.
"I am resuming control effective immediately."
One director objected.
Caroline placed federal warrants on the table.
Nobody objected again.
She froze every account Richard touched.
She terminated Grant's access.
She ordered a forensic audit.
Within twenty-four hours, investigators found $83 million missing.
Then $112 million.
Then $204 million.
Richard had been stealing for nearly a decade.
Grant had joined later.
Vanessa had helped.
But someone else had approved offshore transfers.
Someone whose authorization code belonged to William Bennett.
A dead man.
Caroline knew her father hadn't done it.
His identity had been stolen.
The question was by whom.
The answer arrived from Daniel.
A package appeared at headquarters.
No return address.
Inside was a flash drive.
Daniel's voice played.
"If you're hearing this, I'm still alive."
Caroline almost collapsed with relief.
Daniel explained that he had removed the brake-line report after William's death.
Not to protect Richard.
To protect Caroline.
Richard had threatened to kill her if Daniel went to police.
Daniel pretended to cooperate while secretly copying records.
He had spent eighteen months gathering evidence.
Then Caroline survived.
Everything accelerated.
Daniel's recording contained one final instruction.
"Don't trust Vanessa's deal."
Caroline frowned.
"Why?"
The recording answered.
"Because Vanessa isn't Grant's mistress."
Thomas looked at Caroline.
Daniel continued.
"She's Richard's daughter."
The room went silent.
Vanessa Cole wasn't her legal name.
She had been born Vanessa Vale.
Richard placed her near Grant years earlier.
Grant and Vanessa had manipulated Caroline together.
The affair had been part of the operation from the beginning.
Caroline felt something inside her harden.
No more surprises.
No more fear.
She contacted Reyes.
Vanessa's immunity deal was suspended.
Vanessa disappeared before officers reached her safe house.
That evening, Grant requested to speak with Caroline.
She refused.
Then he sent a message through his attorney.
I KNOW WHERE DANIEL IS.
Caroline agreed to a monitored video call.
Grant appeared in jail clothing.
He looked smaller.
"You look tired," he said.
Caroline didn't respond.
"Motherhood."
"Where is Daniel?"
Grant smiled.
"Still impatient."
"Where?"
"What do I get?"
"Nothing."
"Then Daniel dies."
Caroline stared at him.
Grant leaned closer.
"Richard doesn't forgive betrayal."
"You murdered my father."
His smile disappeared.
"No."
"You were there."
"Yes."
"Then tell me what happened."
Grant looked toward the camera.
"Your father tried to expose Richard. I was supposed to convince him to stop."
"And when he didn't?"
"Richard cut the brakes."
Caroline's throat tightened.
"You watched?"
Grant didn't answer.
That was enough.
"You let him die."
"I didn't push the car."
"You didn't save him."
Grant's eyes hardened.
"Just like nobody saved you."
Caroline leaned toward the screen.
"Someone did."
Grant's jaw tightened.
"That's your problem, Grant. You keep assuming everyone is as alone as you are."
For the first time, he looked wounded.
Good.
"Daniel," Caroline repeated.
Grant sighed.
"Pier 19."
Thomas immediately called Reyes.
A tactical team moved.
Pier 19 belonged to an abandoned Bennett Meridian warehouse.
Police entered shortly after midnight.
They found Daniel tied to a chair.
Alive.
They also found explosives.
The timer showed eleven minutes remaining.
Daniel was rescued.
The warehouse was evacuated.
The explosion destroyed most physical evidence.
But Richard made one mistake.
A security camera across the harbor recorded his vehicle leaving.
Vanessa was in the passenger seat.
Father and daughter were together.
They were running.
For three days, nobody found them.
Then Caroline received a courier envelope at home.
Inside was a photograph of Hope sleeping in her hospital bassinet.
Caroline's blood froze.
Someone had taken it from inside the maternity ward.
On the back were six words:
YOUR FATHER SHOULD HAVE STAYED QUIET.
Thomas called security.
Reyes locked down the property.
Caroline held Hope against her chest.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
Vanessa whispered, "Richard isn't running."
Caroline said nothing.
"He's coming for the company."
"Where are you?"
Vanessa began crying.
"You don't understand. He doesn't need Grant anymore."
"Vanessa—"
"He needs you."
The line crackled.
Caroline heard Richard's voice in the background.
Vanessa gasped.
Then the call ended.
Thirty seconds later, Bennett Meridian's emergency system sent an alert.
Someone had entered William Bennett's sealed office.
Caroline opened the security feed.
The office was dark.
A figure stood behind her father's desk.
Then he turned toward the camera.
Richard.
He raised a handwritten document.
Caroline recognized her father's signature.
Richard smiled.
May you like
Then he held the paper close enough for the camera to read the title.
LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT.
