Chapter 3 - The Child Grant Never Mentioned

Caroline stared at Noah's photograph until the letters blurred.

"That's impossible."

Thomas didn't speak.

That frightened her.

She turned toward him.

"You knew?"

"No."

But something in his face had changed.

The hospital record listed Grant Mercer as "presumed biological father."

The mother's name had been redacted in the copy.

Noah's date of birth matched.

Caroline struggled to understand.

"Why would my father have this?"

Reyes scrolled further.

A DNA laboratory receipt appeared.

No results.

Only a payment confirmation.

William Bennett had ordered the test.

Thomas sat down.

"Noah's mother is my daughter, Emily."

Caroline looked at him.

"Did she know Grant?"

Thomas's jaw tightened.

"Years ago."

Before Caroline met him.

Emily had dated a man named Grant for several months.

He disappeared when she became pregnant.

Thomas never knew Grant's surname because Emily refused to discuss him afterward.

Noah grew up believing his father had abandoned him.

Caroline felt sick.

Grant had married her while possibly knowing he already had a son.

Worse, William had discovered it.

Reyes contacted Emily.

Within an hour, the truth began forming.

Emily remembered Grant.

She identified him immediately from a photograph.

Grant Mercer was Noah's father.

He had lied to everyone.

But why had Caroline's father investigated it?

The answer was in William's audio file.

His voice filled the small vault room.

"Caroline, if you're hearing this, I didn't get the chance to explain."

Caroline covered her mouth.

She hadn't heard her father's voice since his funeral.

"I investigated Grant because money started disappearing from Meridian accounts after he gained access through your household credentials. I found payments to Vanessa Cole and discovered Grant had known her for years. I also found Emily Hale."

Thomas lowered his head.

William continued.

"Grant has been creating relationships based on financial opportunity. I believe he married you because he knew you would inherit the company."

Caroline felt every word.

"I confronted him. He threatened me. If my death is called an accident, don't believe it."

The recording ended.

No one moved.

Reyes immediately reopened William's death investigation.

Grant, meanwhile, was formally arrested for attempted murder, insurance fraud, and evidence tampering.

Vanessa requested immunity.

She had information.

A lot of it.

According to Vanessa, Grant had spent years planning to gain control of Bennett Meridian.

Vanessa insisted she didn't know he intended to kill Caroline.

She admitted helping forge documents.

She admitted hiding assets.

She admitted maintaining the affair.

But murder?

"No," Vanessa told investigators. "I thought he was going to divorce her."

Caroline watched the recorded interview from the hospital.

Reyes paused it.

"Do you believe her?"

Caroline studied Vanessa's face.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because she knew about the insurance."

Reyes agreed.

But suspicion wasn't evidence.

Then Vanessa revealed something unexpected.

Grant had another partner.

Someone inside Bennett Meridian.

Someone with enough authority to alter company records.

Caroline immediately thought of the board.

Her father had trusted very few people.

Grant could not have moved millions alone.

That afternoon, Caroline went into labor.

Three weeks early.

Pain hit during a conversation with Thomas.

At first Caroline dismissed it as stress.

Then another contraction came four minutes later.

Doctors rushed her upstairs.

Everything became movement.

Lights.

Voices.

Monitors.

Caroline's fear returned.

Not for herself.

For her baby.

Thomas stayed outside the delivery room.

Caroline's mother arrived twenty minutes later.

After everything Grant had taken from her, Caroline refused to let him take this moment too.

Six hours later, a cry filled the room.

Caroline began sobbing.

Her daughter was placed against her chest.

Alive.

Healthy.

Perfect.

Caroline named her Hope.

Not because the last few days had been hopeful.

Because she wanted her daughter's name to describe what came after them.

Thomas entered later.

He stood near the doorway, suddenly less like an admiral and more like a grandfather who didn't know whether he belonged.

Caroline smiled.

"Come meet her."

Thomas approached.

He looked down at Hope.

"Your father would have loved her."

Caroline knew.

For a few hours, Grant disappeared from her thoughts.

Then Detective Reyes arrived.

Her expression told Caroline the peace was over.

"We found something in your father's car file."

The original accident photographs showed damage inconsistent with the official report.

Brake fluid had leaked before the vehicle hit the barrier.

Someone had cut a line.

The original mechanic had noted it.

That page disappeared before the case closed.

"Who handled the report?"

Reyes asked.

Caroline knew the name.

Daniel Cross.

Bennett Meridian's chief security officer.

Her father's oldest friend.

The man currently serving as acting CEO while Caroline recovered.

Caroline stared at Reyes.

"Daniel?"

"He signed the evidence transfer."

Thomas's expression hardened.

Caroline called Daniel.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

She opened the company security app.

Her credentials had been revoked.

Someone had locked her out of her own company.

Thomas called federal investigators.

Reyes called local police.

Caroline held Hope against her chest and watched everything her father built begin slipping away.

At 2:13 a.m., Daniel finally called.

Caroline answered.

"Where are you?"

His breathing was heavy.

"Caroline, listen to me."

"Did you help Grant?"

"No."

"Then why did you remove evidence from my father's case?"

"I was trying to protect him."

"From what?"

Daniel hesitated.

"From the person Grant worked for."

Caroline went still.

"Grant worked for someone?"

"He was never the one in charge."

A noise sounded behind Daniel.

A door opening.

He whispered, "They found me."

"Daniel?"

"Your father discovered the truth too late."

"Who?"

Daniel breathed a name.

But the connection broke before Caroline heard it.

Then a message appeared on her phone.

A photograph.

Daniel was standing inside Bennett Meridian headquarters.

Behind him was Caroline's father's old office.

Someone else stood reflected in the glass.

Caroline enlarged the image.

Her heart stopped.

She knew that face.

Everyone in her family did.

Because the man in the reflection had attended William Bennett's funeral.

May you like

He had also been standing inside the cathedral at Caroline's.

And he was walking toward Daniel with a gun.
