Chapter 14 - The Last War of the Castellanos

Their mother had survived.

Her death had been staged after she discovered the truth about Nadine’s father.

Vittorio had threatened both daughters.

She disappeared to keep them alive.

It was cruel.

It was imperfect.

But she was there.

Celeste collapsed into her arms.

Nadine could not move at first.

Twelve years of grief did not reverse in a second.

Then her mother whispered, “I'm sorry.”

Nadine cried.

They would need years for the rest.

But they had years now.

Vittorio’s final trap failed.

Law enforcement surrounded the mansion.

Dante refused to let Nadine go anywhere near it.

This time she agreed.

Not because he commanded her.

Because it made sense.

Vittorio was arrested after a six-hour standoff.

No heroic execution.

No revenge.

He simply walked out in handcuffs and discovered that the world he had controlled no longer obeyed him.

For Dante, that was worse than death.

The criminal empire collapsed.

Assets tied to illegal activity were seized.

Legitimate companies entered independent management.

Marco testified.

The accountant confessed.

Dozens of corrupt officials were charged.

Adrian surrendered his own illegal holdings and accepted a plea agreement.

Dante did the same.

Months passed.

Nadine filed for legal separation.

Dante did not fight her.

That surprised everyone.

“I told you,” he said. “I’m done deciding for you.”

He lived in a small apartment while the case proceeded.

He attended every permitted visit with Lucia.

Changed diapers.

Learned bottles.

Got spit-up on expensive shirts.

And never once asked Nadine when she was coming back.

That mattered more than flowers could have.

Celeste entered therapy.

So did Nadine.

Their mother slowly returned to their lives.

Adrian opened a legitimate logistics company with employees from businesses dismantled during the investigation.

One afternoon, he visited Nadine.

“You know,” he said, “Dante still hates that I called you my wife.”

Nadine smiled.

“You enjoyed it.”

“Immensely.”

“You’re terrible.”

“I've been called worse.”

He became something she had never expected.

Family.

Not through romance.

Through Lucia.

Through truth.

Through the strange bond of surviving the same broken dynasty.

A year after the kiss, Nadine received a letter.

Dante’s sentencing had been decided.

Because of his cooperation, restitution, evidence, and dismantling of his organization, he would serve a limited custodial sentence followed by years of supervision.

He did not ask Nadine to wait.

The night before he reported, he came to say goodbye to Lucia.

He held his daughter for an hour.

Then kissed her forehead.

At the door, Nadine stopped him.

“Dante.”

He turned.

She handed him an envelope.

He opened it.

Inside was their divorce petition.

Unsigned.

Dante stared.

“What does this mean?”

“It means I haven't decided.”

He looked at her.

Hope appeared.

Nadine raised a hand.

“Don't.”

He nodded.

“I won't.”

“Go become the man you keep saying you want to be.”

“I will.”

“And don't do it for me.”

His eyes filled.

“I know.”

Dante left.

Eighteen months later, Nadine stood outside a correctional facility with Lucia holding her hand.

The gates opened.

A man stepped through.

Dante.

He stopped when he saw them.

Lucia recognized him from every weekly video call.

“Daddy!”

She ran.

Dante dropped to his knees.

Nadine watched him catch their daughter.

Then he looked at Nadine.

He did not approach.

May you like

He waited.

And for the first time since she had known him, Dante Castellano left the next choice entirely to her…
