Chapter 11 - The Ledger Beneath the Nursery Floor

Dante and Adrian arrived within seconds.

Celeste was not injured.

The blood belonged to one of Adrian’s guards.

Marco had attacked an outer checkpoint and escaped.

“He wanted me alive,” Celeste said.

“Why?” Nadine asked.

“Because I know how to decode Dad’s ledger.”

Everyone stared.

“You never told us that.”

“I only figured it out tonight.”

Their father had hidden names inside ordinary financial entries.

Dates corresponded to birthdays.

Amounts corresponded to initials.

One sequence appeared repeatedly.

Vittorio.

Judges.

Police officers.

Port officials.

Everything needed to dismantle his protection network.

But another code appeared beside Nadine’s name.

Celeste decoded it.

SAFEKEEPER.

Nadine frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Dante understood first.

“Your father made you the legal custodian of the evidence.”

“How?”

A trust.

Created decades earlier.

Nadine unknowingly controlled a dormant corporation containing copies of every record.

Vittorio had spent years trying to gain access through marriage alliances and forged documents.

Her marriage to Dante had brought her closer to the danger—but had also accidentally protected her.

“Was our marriage arranged?” Nadine asked.

Dante shook his head.

“No.”

“You swear?”

“Yes.”

Their fathers had once discussed introducing them.

But Dante and Nadine’s actual meeting years later had been accidental.

For once, something between them had been real from the beginning.

Nadine needed that.

At dawn, investigators arrived.

They copied the ledger.

Arrest warrants began moving quietly.

Then one agent took Nadine aside.

“There’s a problem.”

“What?”

“Someone accessed the evidence server twenty minutes ago.”

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

The building alarm suddenly sounded.

Adrian drew his weapon.

Dante ran toward Lucia.

Nadine followed.

The crib was empty.

Her heart stopped.

“No.”

A window stood open.

On the mattress lay a phone.

It began ringing.

Nadine answered.

Marco’s voice came through.

“You have something Vittorio wants.”

Nadine couldn't breathe.

“And now I have something you want.”

A baby cried in the background.

Lucia.

Nadine screamed her daughter’s name.

Marco gave her an address.

Then the line went dead.

Dante looked ready to kill the world.

But Nadine saw something on the crib.

A tiny smear of blood.

Beside it lay one of Celeste’s earrings.

Nadine turned slowly.

“Where is my sister?”

Nobody answered.

Then the basement door opened.

Celeste emerged holding Lucia.

Everyone froze.

If Lucia was here…

Then whose baby had Nadine just heard crying on Marco’s phone?
