Chapter 8 - The Night Harper Disappeared

Mateo kicked the door open.

The hallway was empty.

They found the guard outside unconscious but alive.

Harper replayed Claire's words.

“They want Mateo distracted.”

“From what?” Gabriel asked.

Harper knew.

“The empire.”

The pregnancy was leverage.

The real target remained Mateo's organization.

Harper reconstructed the original night she disappeared.

Simon had altered records.

Two gunmen entered the archive.

But neither had actually fired at her.

They had chased her toward the parking garage.

Toward the only exit not covered by Mateo's private security.

“They wanted me to run.”

Mateo stared.

“They engineered your disappearance.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make you believe I betrayed you.”

The answer hurt.

Because it had worked perfectly.

Harper disappearing had destabilized Mateo.

Simon had become more powerful.

Internal trust collapsed.

The Consortium had spent eight months quietly acquiring debt attached to Mateo's businesses.

Harper checked current ownership.

Her stomach dropped.

“Mateo.”

“What?”

“They're taking control tomorrow morning.”

Through a coordinated series of defaults, loans and shell corporations, the Consortium would gain controlling interests in nearly half his legitimate holdings.

Mateo smiled coldly.

“Then we burn the companies.”

Harper stared at him.

“You cannot solve accounting problems with fire.”

“I've solved other problems with fire.”

“I'm pretending you didn't say that.”

She worked through the night.

At 4:13 a.m., she found the weakness.

The Consortium's claims depended on fraudulent collateral documents authorized through Charles Vale.

Expose the fraud before markets opened, and the entire takeover could collapse.

They needed Vale.

Gabriel found him.

Not alive.

His body was discovered inside his office.

But Vale had left a safe.

Inside was a confession.

And one photograph.

The Custodian.

Harper looked at the image.

She knew the man.

Everyone in Chicago did.

Richard Weller.

Billionaire philanthropist.

Banking executive.

And chairman of the foundation hosting half the city's charity events.

“He financed my father,” Mateo whispered.

Elena nodded.

“And his father financed your grandfather.”

Three generations.

Harper finally understood.

The Falcone empire had never been independent.

Weller's family had cultivated it.

Controlled it.

And whenever a Falcone attempted to escape, someone died.

Antonio.

Simon.

Perhaps others.

Mateo looked at Harper.

“We end it.”

“How?”

“Your way.”

She blinked.

“Numbers?”

“Numbers.”

It was the greatest compliment he could give her.

They prepared the evidence.

At dawn, Harper sent copies to federal investigators, journalists, banking regulators and attorneys.

Not because she trusted any single institution.

Because nobody could erase all of them.

Then the contractions began.

Real ones.

Claire was still missing.

Another doctor arrived.

“Baby's coming.”

Mateo stayed beside Harper.

Hours passed.

The empire could wait.

For once, Mateo Falcone cared about nothing except the woman crushing his hand.

At noon, Liam entered.

“Mateo.”

“Not now.”

“You need to see this.”

“No.”

“It's Weller.”

Harper looked at him.

“What happened?”

Liam held up his phone.

Richard Weller had called a press conference.

He was accusing Mateo publicly of financial crimes.

Worse, he claimed Harper Reed had been coerced into falsifying evidence.

Harper laughed between contractions.

“That's his plan?”

Mateo looked at her.

“He's calling you a liar.”

“He's a billionaire. That's basically a hobby.”

Another contraction hit.

Mateo took her hand.

Then Harper's phone chimed.

A file arrived from an unknown sender.

Video.

She opened it.

Claire Bennett appeared on screen.

Alive.

Behind her stood Richard Weller.

And beside him was someone Harper recognized from the night she ran.

The second gunman.

He removed his sunglasses.

Mateo stopped breathing.

Harper looked at him.

“You know him?”

Mateo whispered one name.

“Gabriel.”

May you like

Harper turned toward the door.

The Gabriel standing downstairs had disappeared.
