Chapter 13 - The Last Safe House

The man at the door was Adrian Falcone.

Antonio's younger brother.

And Mateo's biological father.

Mateo did not invite him inside.

Adrian entered anyway.

He was seventy-two.

Silver-haired.

Thin.

Calm.

And he had Mateo's eyes.

Harper saw the truth immediately.

Mateo did too.

“You're the Custodian.”

Adrian did not deny it.

“I created the modern Consortium.”

Elena looked sick.

“You destroyed this family.”

“I preserved it.”

Mateo laughed.

“You murdered people.”

“I protected what your father was too weak to protect.”

“Antonio was my father.”

Adrian's expression hardened.

“I am your father.”

“No.”

The single word ended the argument.

Adrian looked at Harper's child.

Mateo stepped between them.

“Don't.”

Adrian smiled.

“My grandson.”

“No.”

“Blood doesn't require your permission.”

Harper stood.

“Family does.”

Adrian looked at her.

“So you're the accountant.”

“And you're the man whose financial structure is currently collapsing.”

His smile vanished.

Harper enjoyed that.

Adrian had come for the master ledger.

Without it, prosecutors could dismantle everything he had spent decades building.

Mateo refused.

Adrian produced leverage.

Claire Bennett.

Alive.

Held at an unknown location.

And Anna Gorski's younger brother, whom nobody knew existed.

Two hostages.

One exchange.

Harper knew they could not simply surrender the evidence.

So they created a copy.

Not of the ledger.

Of a virus designed to transmit Adrian's location the moment he accessed it.

At midnight, Mateo took the drive to the exchange point.

An abandoned safe house near Lake Michigan.

Harper stayed behind with the baby.

For twelve minutes.

Then she discovered the flaw.

Adrian would never personally open the drive.

He would make Mateo do it.

The tracking system would identify Mateo, not Adrian.

She called.

No answer.

Harper gave the baby to Elena.

“Absolutely not,” Elena said.

“I know the encryption.”

“You just gave birth.”

“And I'm still the only person who understands what Adrian wants.”

Liam drove.

At the safe house, Mateo stood opposite Adrian.

Claire and the young hostage were alive.

Adrian handed Mateo a laptop.

“Open it.”

Exactly as Harper predicted.

Then Harper walked in.

Mateo looked furious.

“No.”

“Later.”

She faced Adrian.

“You need me.”

Adrian studied her.

“You're brave.”

“No. I'm exhausted and angry. People confuse those things.”

She sat.

Opened the drive.

Entered a false key.

Adrian leaned closer.

The trap activated.

Not the tracker.

Something better.

Harper had modified the ledger before leaving.

Every Consortium account began transmitting ownership data directly to investigators.

Adrian saw it.

His face changed.

“What did you do?”

“Accounting.”

He reached for her.

Mateo moved first.

Adrian drew a gun.

Liam fired.

The weapon flew from Adrian's hand.

Police surrounded the building.

Claire was freed.

The hostages survived.

Adrian was arrested.

Mateo stood over him.

Adrian looked up.

“You're my son.”

Mateo answered quietly.

“No. I'm Antonio's.”

They walked outside.

Harper expected relief.

Instead Mateo stared at the lake.

“My whole life was built on lies.”

Harper took his hand.

“Then build the next part yourself.”

He looked at her.

For once, no empire stood between them.

Then Liam ran from the house.

“Harper!”

She turned.

“What?”

“The ledger.”

“What about it?”

“There was one final file.”

Harper opened Liam's phone.

A trust document appeared.

The entire legitimate Falcone estate had been transferred years earlier.

Not to Mateo.

Not Gabriel.

Not Adrian.

To an unnamed beneficiary.

The beneficiary had just been activated.

Harper read the date.

Her son's birthday.

Then she saw the beneficiary's legal guardian.

May you like

HARPER REED.

And beneath her name was a signature she had never written.
