Chapter 3 - The Sixteen-Year Secret

Nathan walked back into his house like a man entering a minefield. He sat beside Lily on the couch, reassuring her with soft words until her heavy eyelids finally fluttered closed and she drifted off into an exhausted sleep.
Once he was certain she was safe, Nathan walked up the stairs, each step heavy with apprehension. He pushed open the master bedroom door.
Victoria was sitting on the edge of the bed in the dark, her face buried in her hands. When the doorway light caught her, Nathan saw that her face was bruised, her lip split, and her wrist heavily wrapped in a makeshift bandage.
"Nathan," she choked out, looking up with eyes filled with absolute despair. "You're home."
"I saw the footage, Victoria," Nathan said quietly, closing the door behind him. "I saw the man on the porch. I saw what happened to Lily."
Victoria gasped, dropping her head back into her hands as violent sobs racked her body. "Oh God... Nathan, I'm so sorry. I was trying to protect you both. I was trying to keep him away!"
"Who is he?" Nathan demanded, sitting in the chair opposite her. "And why did you tell our seven-year-old daughter that nobody would believe her if she spoke up?"
Victoria took a trembling breath, wiping tears from her cheeks. "Because sixteen years ago... before I met you, before I moved to Georgia... I didn't exist as Victoria Barlow. My real name is Helena Vance."
Nathan froze. "What are you talking about?"
"Sixteen years ago, my twin brother, Julian, and I were involved in a high-stakes financial fraud ring run by our stepfather in Chicago," Victoria confessed, her voice barely a whisper. "I was nineteen. I didn't know the extent of what they were doing until federal agents raided our house. When I realized how dangerous they were, I cooperated with the authorities. I testified against my stepfather and my brother. Julian went to federal prison for fifteen years. I was placed in witness protection, given a new identity, a new past, a new life."
She looked at Nathan with raw, unadulterated heartbreak. "I met you four years later. I fell in love with you, Nathan. But the government told me that if I ever revealed my real name or my past to anyone—even my spouse—I would lose my protection, and Julian's associates would track me down. I lived every single day terrified that my past would swallow this beautiful life we built."

"Julian got out," Nathan realized, the pieces falling into place with terrifying clarity.
"Three months ago," Victoria wept. "He tracked me down. He didn't want money, Nathan. He wants revenge. He wants to destroy my life the way he believes I destroyed his. Yesterday, he showed up here. He threatened to take Lily. I fought him off, but he told me if I went to the police, he would release forged documents showing that you were involved in his illegal offshore accounts—he spent years framing you from behind bars, setting up paper trails in your name!"
