Chapter 9 - Before the Doors Opened

Amelia stared at the phone.

The call ended.

"Mom."

Vincent was already moving.

"Marco."

The guard appeared.

"Find her mother."

Amelia grabbed Vincent's arm.

"No."

He turned.

"The voice wanted me to panic."

"What are you thinking?"

"If someone had Mom, they wouldn't call from her phone and then knock on a door in this building."

Another knock.

Amelia approached.

Vincent stayed beside her.

"Who is it?"

A woman's voice answered.

"Amelia."

Her mother.

Amelia opened the door.

Margaret Barrett stood outside.

Alive.

Safe.

Tears covered her face.

Amelia pulled her into an embrace.

For several seconds she was no longer an accountant solving a conspiracy.

She was simply a daughter holding her mother.

Then she pulled back.

"You wrote my name in the ledger."

Margaret looked toward Jonathan.

Their eyes met.

Twelve years disappeared between them.

Jonathan whispered:

"Maggie."

Margaret slapped him.

The sound echoed through the ballroom.

Dante looked away.

Vincent did too.

Jonathan touched his cheek.

"I deserved that."

"You deserved worse."

"I know."

Margaret began crying again.

Then she hugged him.

Amelia watched her parents hold each other after twelve years apart and discovered there were emotions too complicated to name.

Eventually Margaret stepped away.

Amelia asked the question again.

"Why was my name in the ledger?"

Her mother took a breath.

"Because the trust needed a successor."

"You knew about it?"

"Some of it."

"How much?"

"Your father told me enough before he disappeared."

Jonathan looked surprised.

"You told me to forget everything."

"I tried."

Margaret wiped her face.

"But Salvatore contacted me before he died."

Vincent stepped closer.

"My father?"

"He told me that if anything happened to Jonathan, one day you three might need each other."

Amelia looked at Vincent and Dante.

"So you added my name."

"Years later. When I learned Richard was moving money again."

"How?"

Margaret gave a tired smile.

"You think you're the only Barrett who understands bookkeeping?"

Amelia almost laughed.

Her mother had managed household finances for decades.

After Jonathan disappeared, Margaret had quietly tracked unexplained deposits arriving through protected accounts.

She eventually discovered enough to understand the trust.

"I added your name because I knew Richard would eventually find the account," Margaret explained. "If he did, I wanted him focused on you."

Jonathan stared.

"You made her a target?"

"I made her visible."

"That's the same thing."

"No. Richard already knew who she was."

Margaret's voice hardened.

"I made sure the trust couldn't move without her."

Amelia wasn't sure whether to be furious or impressed.

Probably both.

Vincent looked at Jonathan.

"What happens now?"

"Now Richard's records go where they should have gone twelve years ago."

Elena nodded.

"Authorities already have copies."

"And the businesses?"

Vincent asked.

"Audits. Investigations. Probably months of them."

Dante exhaled.

Vincent looked at him.

"We need to talk."

"I know."

"Not tonight."

Dante nodded.

That was perhaps the first mature decision either brother had made about the other in years.

Amelia sat beside her mother.

Across the room, Jonathan watched her.

She finally said, "Come here."

He did.

She looked at the man she had mourned.

"I don't know what happens between us."

"I understand."

"I don't know how long it'll take."

"As long as you need."

"And you don't disappear again."

Jonathan's eyes filled.

"Never."

Amelia nodded.

That was not forgiveness.

But it was a beginning.

Hours passed.

Statements were taken.

Documents were cataloged.

The power eventually returned.

One chandelier after another came alive.

Golden light filled the ballroom.

Amelia looked upward.

The darkness that had seemed terrifying at midnight suddenly felt temporary.

Vincent approached.

"You should go home."

"So should you."

"This is my building."

"And apparently half my family's secret history."

He almost smiled.

"Fair."

She looked at him.

"Are you okay?"

Vincent considered lying.

Then didn't.

"No."

"Good."

He raised an eyebrow.

"I mean good that you said it."

He nodded.

"My father wasn't the man I thought."

"Neither was mine."

"Does that bother you?"

"Which part?"

"Finding out people are more complicated than the version you loved."

Amelia thought.

"No."

Then corrected herself.

"Yes. But maybe loving someone doesn't require pretending they never failed."

Vincent looked across the room at Dante.

"That's inconvenient."

"Most true things are."

Dante approached.

He carried an envelope.

"I found this in Dad's records."

He handed it to Vincent.

The front read:

FOR MY SONS.

Vincent opened it.

Inside was a letter from Salvatore.

Vincent read silently.

Then handed it to Dante.

His brother's eyes filled.

Amelia didn't ask what it said.

Some things belonged to them.

Dante folded the letter carefully.

Then looked at Vincent.

"I did think about taking Richard's deal."

Vincent's expression hardened.

Dante continued.

"Years ago. He told me you'd never see me as an equal."

"Did you believe him?"

"Sometimes."

"Why didn't you do it?"

Dante looked toward Amelia.

"Numbers."

She blinked.

"What?"

"The first time I tried moving money, I realized where Richard's accounts actually led."

"So you started investigating."

"Yes."

Vincent studied him.

"You could have trusted me."

Dante gave a sad smile.

"You could have trusted me too."

Neither brother had an answer.

Amelia stood.

"Start now."

Both looked at her.

"It's cheaper than another twelve years of secret accounting."

Dante laughed.

Vincent finally did too.

The sound felt strange in that room.

Almost hopeful.

Then Elena approached.

Her expression erased it.

"We have a problem."

"What?"

"Richard wasn't the final beneficiary."

Amelia's stomach tightened.

Elena handed her a newly decrypted document.

At the bottom was another name.

CARMINE DELANO.

Vincent read it.

"We knew Carmine was involved."

Elena shook her head.

"No. Look at the authorization date."

Amelia did.

Tomorrow.

The document scheduled automatic transfer of controlling interests at 9:00 a.m.

Richard had created a failsafe.

Even with the money frozen, ownership of several companies could still transfer.

"Can we stop it?" Dante asked.

Elena looked at Amelia.

"Only if we find the original corporate authorization."

"Where?"

"Richard's private archive."

Vincent checked the time.

5:42 a.m.

They had a little over three hours.

Amelia closed her laptop.

"Then let's find it."

At 7:56, after two hours of searching, they found Richard's archive beneath his downtown legal office.

At 8:41, Amelia found the cabinet.

At 8:52, Vincent found the file.

At 8:57, they discovered the authorization document was missing.

Dante stared at the empty folder.

"Someone beat us here."

Amelia noticed the safe behind the cabinet.

Its door stood slightly open.

She approached.

Inside was a single photograph.

Taken that morning.

It showed Carmine Delano entering the Starlight Lounge.

Amelia looked at the timestamp.

8:55.

Her phone rang.

Starlight security.

She answered.

"Amelia?"

It was Rosa.

Her voice shook.

"He's here."

"Who?"

"Carmine."

Amelia looked at Vincent.

Rosa whispered:

May you like

"And he brought the original authorization with him."

Then, through the phone, Amelia heard the private office door open.
