Chapter 7 - What Their Father Left Behind

Richard Vale looked almost exactly as Amelia remembered him from photographs.

Older, certainly.

But composed.

Polished.

The kind of man who could destroy a family while making the paperwork look respectable.

"Good evening, Amelia."

She stepped toward the laptop.

"Where is my father?"

"Safe."

"Let me speak to him."

"You just did."

Vincent moved beside her.

"Richard."

Richard smiled.

"Vincent. You've grown remarkably suspicious."

"You trained me well."

That erased the smile.

Dante stepped into view.

Richard's expression changed again.

"Dante."

"You look disappointed."

"I expected you to be more ambitious."

"You expected me to betray my brother."

"I expected you to understand opportunity."

Dante looked at Vincent.

"For a while, I almost did."

Vincent heard that.

So did Amelia.

But there would be time for that truth later.

Richard continued.

"Unlock the trust."

"No," Amelia said.

"You don't understand what you're protecting."

"I understand exactly enough."

"Your father stole from people who trusted him."

"My father created records of what you were doing."

Richard sighed.

"Jonathan always did enjoy moral simplicity."

Amelia's anger sharpened.

"Where is he?"

"Come to the ballroom."

Vincent immediately said, "No."

Richard smiled.

"Then Jonathan leaves with me."

The screen went dark.

Amelia turned.

"I'm going."

Vincent shook his head.

"That's what he wants."

"He's my father."

"And you're what he wants."

"Then we know he'll keep me alive."

"That's not a strategy."

"It's leverage."

Vincent stared at her.

For months, Amelia had quietly accepted that people underestimated her.

Clients saw a soft-spoken plus-size woman with spreadsheets and assumed she was harmless background.

Men talked around her.

Executives forgot she was in rooms.

Dante had talked through a wall because an accounting office had seemed insignificant.

Richard had made the same mistake.

He thought she was merely Jonathan Barrett's daughter.

He had not understood what she could do with numbers.

"Give me five minutes," Amelia said.

"For what?"

"To make myself useless to him."

She returned to the laptop.

The override had six minutes remaining.

Amelia opened the trust structure.

She couldn't transfer the money.

But she could change the authentication protocol.

"What are you doing?" Elena asked.

"Making the trust require four approvals."

"There are only three beneficiaries."

"Exactly."

Dante understood first.

"You're creating a deadlock."

"Permanent?"

"Until a court reviews the founding documents."

Vincent looked at her.

"How long?"

"Months."

Richard wouldn't be able to force anyone to release the money tonight.

Amelia entered the amendment.

The system requested the fourth beneficiary name.

She paused.

Then typed:

JONATHAN BARRETT.

The trust accepted it.

Everyone stared.

"He's still registered," Amelia whispered.

Her father wasn't merely alive.

Legally, somewhere inside the trust's sealed records, he had never been declared dead.

The override failed.

ACCOUNT LOCKED PENDING BENEFICIARY REVIEW.

Amelia closed the laptop.

"Now we go."

The ballroom occupied the eastern wing.

Emergency lights cast long shadows across marble.

When they arrived, Richard stood alone beneath the dead chandelier.

"Where's my father?"

Richard looked at his phone.

His confidence slipped.

"You changed the trust."

"Yes."

"Undo it."

"No."

"You don't know what you've done."

"I made you wait for lawyers."

Dante almost laughed.

Richard's gaze moved to him.

"You think this is funny?"

"No. I think Dad would."

Richard's face tightened.

Vincent noticed.

"Our father knew."

Richard didn't answer.

"He knew what you were doing."

"He knew enough to become inconvenient."

The words hung there.

Vincent's eyes hardened.

"What happened to him?"

Richard realized too late that he had said too much.

Amelia quietly activated the recorder on her phone.

Richard looked at Vincent.

"Your father wanted out."

"Out of what?"

"Everything."

"The accounts?"

"The arrangements."

Richard's voice became colder.

"He and Jonathan decided they could suddenly become righteous men after spending years building the machine."

Dante stepped forward.

"So you killed him?"

Richard smiled faintly.

"I didn't say that."

"No," Amelia said. "But you almost did."

Richard looked at her.

For the first time, genuine dislike entered his face.

"You really are Jonathan's daughter."

"Thank you."

"It wasn't praise."

"I still took it as one."

A door opened behind Richard.

Two men entered.

No weapons visible.

But their purpose was obvious.

Vincent moved in front of Amelia.

Richard raised a hand.

"Nobody needs to get hurt."

"Then bring Jonathan out," Amelia said.

Richard considered her.

Finally he nodded.

Another door opened.

Jonathan Barrett walked into the ballroom.

Amelia forgot everything else.

He was thinner.

Older.

His hair was almost entirely gray.

But it was him.

Her father.

"Millie."

Amelia's eyes filled.

She crossed half the room before stopping herself.

Richard still stood between them.

Jonathan looked at her with twelve years of regret in his face.

"I'm sorry."

Amelia couldn't answer.

Richard said, "Touching. Now undo the lock."

Jonathan shook his head.

"Don't."

Richard turned.

"You don't get to decide anymore."

"No," Jonathan said.

"She does."

Amelia looked at her father.

Jonathan smiled.

Not because he was happy.

Because he was proud.

Richard's composure cracked.

He reached into his jacket.

Vincent immediately stepped forward.

But Richard removed only an envelope.

He tossed it onto the floor.

"Before you decide who the villain is, Amelia, read that."

She picked it up.

Inside was a death certificate.

Salvatore Moretti.

Attached was a medical report.

And beneath it was a handwritten confession.

Amelia read the first paragraph.

Her stomach turned.

Vincent noticed.

"What?"

She looked at Jonathan.

"Dad."

He closed his eyes.

"What does it say?" Vincent demanded.

Amelia couldn't answer.

Vincent took the page.

He read the signature at the bottom.

Jonathan Barrett.

Then the first line.

I was with Salvatore Moretti the night he died, and I am responsible for what happened next.

Vincent slowly raised his eyes toward Amelia's father.

May you like

Jonathan whispered:

"There's something your father asked me to do that night."
