Chapter 6 - The Key Her Father Left Behind

Khloe couldn’t move.

Vincent saw the fear on her face.

“What did he say?”

Michael remained on the line.

“Do not react.”

Khloe forced herself to breathe normally.

There were five people inside the house.

Vincent.

Rebecca.

Derek.

Detective Cole.

Khloe.

If Michael was telling the truth, one of them knew something about her father’s death.

Her father, Samuel Harrison, had supposedly died after losing control of his car on an icy road.

No investigation had suggested otherwise.

“Where are you?” Khloe asked.

“Close.”

“Why should I trust you?”

“You shouldn’t. Not yet.”

Vincent held out his hand.

“Let me speak to him.”

Michael heard.

“Put me on speaker.”

Khloe did.

Vincent’s voice broke slightly.

“Michael?”

Silence.

Then:

“Hey, Vin.”

The feared mafia king closed his eyes.

Nine years disappeared from his face.

For one second, he was simply a younger brother hearing a voice he had mourned.

“You’re alive.”

“I’m sorry.”

Vincent turned away.

“Nine years.”

“I know.”

“You let me bury an empty coffin.”

“I know.”

“You watched me mourn you.”

Michael’s voice softened.

“If I came back, Chad would have killed everyone helping me.”

Vincent looked toward Derek.

“You trusted him.”

“With my life.”

“But not me.”

“With yours too.”

That silenced him.

Michael continued.

“Samuel Harrison helped me.”

Khloe gripped the phone.

“My father?”

“He was an auditor.”

“I know.”

“He audited one of Chad’s first shell companies. He found irregularities and contacted me.”

Khloe remembered her father becoming anxious during the final months of his life.

He changed locks.

Stopped answering unknown calls.

Once, she had caught him burning documents in the backyard.

She had thought he was worried about work.

“What happened to him?”

Michael hesitated.

“His crash wasn’t an accident.”

Khloe sat down.

Vincent moved toward her, but she raised one hand.

Not yet.

She needed the truth.

“Who killed him?”

“I don’t know who physically caused the crash. But Chad ordered the problem handled.”

Khloe’s eyes filled.

She refused to let the tears fall.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t know whether Chad knew Samuel gave you something.”

“The key.”

“Yes.”

“What does it open?”

“The first ledger.”

Rebecca stepped closer.

“If you have evidence of homicide, you need to come in.”

“I will.”

Detective Cole asked, “Where are you?”

Michael laughed softly.

“That’s the problem.”

Everyone looked at Cole.

Khloe’s skin went cold.

Michael continued.

“I never told anyone on this call that I had evidence of homicide.”

Cole’s face changed.

Rebecca stepped backward.

Vincent moved instantly between Cole and Khloe.

Cole raised both hands.

“You’re misunderstanding.”

Michael’s voice came through the speaker.

“No, Aaron. I’m finally understanding.”

Derek reached toward his jacket.

Cole pulled his weapon.

Everything froze.

Vincent stared at him.

“You?”

Cole’s expression hardened.

“Put the phone down.”

Khloe did not move.

Cole pointed the weapon toward Vincent.

“Now.”

Michael spoke calmly.

“You won’t get out of there.”

Cole smiled.

“You think?”

Sirens suddenly approached outside.

Not one vehicle.

Several.

Michael had already contacted federal agents.

Cole looked toward the windows.

That moment of distraction was enough.

Derek knocked the weapon aside.

Vincent drove Cole against the wall.

Rebecca kicked the gun away.

Khloe stood frozen.

Within seconds, agents entered and arrested Cole.

No one was hurt.

Michael arrived ten minutes later.

Vincent saw him through the open doorway.

He looked older than the photograph.

Dark hair threaded with gray.

A scar crossed his cheek.

For several seconds, the brothers simply stared.

Then Vincent crossed the room.

Khloe expected anger.

Instead, he pulled Michael into his arms.

Neither spoke.

Khloe turned away, giving them the privacy nine years had stolen.

Later, Michael explained everything.

Cole had been a young detective when Chad’s operation began. He buried reports, redirected investigations, and helped Chad identify employees who might become threats.

Samuel Harrison discovered the financial scheme.

Michael tried to protect him.

They failed.

Before Samuel died, he mailed Khloe an ordinary package containing family belongings.

Hidden among them was the brass key.

Khloe had kept it in a jewelry box for four years.

The key opened a private safe-deposit box registered under a trust.

At dawn, with federal investigators present, Khloe retrieved it.

Inside was a handwritten ledger.

Names.

Payments.

Dates.

Account numbers.

And one final sealed letter.

For Khloe.

She opened it.

Sweetheart,

If you’re reading this, then I wasn’t able to finish what I started.

I’m sorry for leaving danger behind.

But I know you.

You will be afraid.

Be afraid.

Courage isn’t the absence of fear.

It’s deciding that fear doesn’t get the final vote.

I love you.

Dad.

Khloe cried then.

Quietly.

Vincent stood beside her.

He didn’t tell her not to.

He simply offered his hand.

She took it.

The ledger transformed the investigation.

Accounts were frozen.

Former employees came forward.

Evidence tied Chad to fraud, extortion, false accusations, and obstruction.

Cole began cooperating with prosecutors.

But Chad remained missing.

For two days, Chicago police searched.

Khloe stayed in a secure Moretti-owned apartment with Rebecca nearby.

Vincent visited but never crowded her.

Something between them had changed.

She had seen beneath his reputation.

He had seen her refuse to collapse.

On the third evening, Khloe found him on the balcony.

“You saved me at Obsidian,” she said.

“You saved yourself.”

“You stepped in.”

“So would anyone decent.”

She smiled.

“I don’t think Chad agrees with your definition of decent.”

Vincent almost smiled.

Then Khloe became serious.

“What happens when this is over?”

“To Chad?”

“To us.”

Vincent looked surprised.

She was too.

He took a slow breath.

“I don’t know.”

“Good.”

“Good?”

“I don’t trust men who always know what happens next.”

He laughed.

Khloe leaned against the railing.

For the first time since the gala, she felt safe.

Then her phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

One photograph.

Khloe asleep inside the apartment.

Taken less than an hour earlier.

Her blood went cold.

Another message arrived.

YOU SHOULD HAVE GIVEN ME THE KEY.

Vincent immediately called security.

No one had entered.

No doors had opened.

No windows had been breached.

Then Khloe looked toward the ceiling.

A tiny red light blinked inside the smoke detector.

Vincent pulled it down.

A camera.

Her phone vibrated again.

THIS WAS NEVER ABOUT THE MONEY.

Then a final message appeared.

ASK MICHAEL WHAT HE PROMISED CHAD NINE YEARS AGO.

Khloe slowly turned toward the doorway.

May you like

Michael was standing there.

And he had seen the message.
