Chapter 3 - What My Husband Didn't Know

Ryan's younger brother had been dead for four years.
At least that was what I believed.
"That's not Ethan," I said.
William took Vanessa's phone.
He enlarged the photograph.
His face changed.
Ryan looked sick.
"Ethan died."
Vanessa said nothing.
William studied the image.
The man was partly turned away.
Dark hair.
Same height as Ryan.
A familiar profile.
But photographs lied.
Angles lied.
Grief lied.
William handed the phone back.
"Where was this taken?"
Vanessa swallowed.
"Chicago."
"When?"
"Six weeks ago."
Ryan stared at her.
"You knew my brother?"
"No."
"Then who is that?"
"I don't know."
"Don't lie to me."
She looked at him sharply.
"That's rich."
Ryan ignored it.
"My brother died in Afghanistan."
William's voice was quiet.
"No."
Every eye turned toward him.
Ryan stared.
"What?"
William closed his eyes briefly.
"Ethan did not die in Afghanistan."
The silence that followed felt impossible.
Ryan laughed.
"Dad, I identified his body."
"You identified personal effects."
"I saw the report."
"You saw what the Army released."
Ryan's face changed.
"What are you saying?"
William looked at the twins.
Then at me.
This was the secret he hadn't wanted to discuss.
Not tonight.
Now he had no choice.
"Ethan survived the attack."
Ryan stepped backward.
"No."
"He was severely injured."
"No."
"He was transferred."
"Stop."
"Ryan—"
"Stop!"
Both babies startled.
I stood.
"Enough."
Ryan looked at me.
His face was devastated.
I had never seen him like that.
William lowered his voice.
"Ethan entered a protected intelligence program after the attack."
Ryan stared at his father.
"For four years?"
"Yes."
"You let me bury an empty coffin?"
"I followed orders."
"I'm your son."
"So is Ethan."
Ryan's eyes filled with rage.
"You let Mom die believing he was dead?"
William looked away.
That answer was worse than words.
Ryan understood.
"She knew."
William nodded.
Ryan nearly collapsed.
"She knew?"
"Only during her final months."
"Everyone knew except me."
"No."
"Apparently my mistress knew him!"
Vanessa shook her head.
"I didn't know who he was."
Ryan turned toward her.
"Then explain the hotel."
She looked trapped.
Finally, she sat down.
"I met him under another name."
"What name?"
"Eric Hale."
William's expression sharpened.
Ryan laughed without humor.
"Of course."
I watched Vanessa.
"When did you meet him?"
"Before Ryan."
Ryan stopped.
"What?"
"Two years ago."
The affair suddenly had another layer.
Vanessa continued.
"Eric and I dated briefly."
"And six weeks ago?"
"He contacted me."
"Why?"
She hesitated.
"He wanted information about Ryan."
Ryan stared.
"What information?"
"About the company."
Rebecca stepped forward.
"Carter Family Holdings?"
Vanessa nodded.
Everything seemed to circle back to Eleanor's trust.
Ryan looked toward William.
"What the hell is going on?"
William sat down slowly.
"The company wasn't only your mother's inheritance."
Rebecca watched him carefully.
William continued.
"Some of its earliest contracts involved defense logistics."
Ryan frowned.
"I know."
"No. You know the public version."
"Then tell me the private one."
William looked at me.
I didn't want another family secret.
But apparently I had married into a house built from them.
"Ethan discovered irregularities," William said.
"What kind?"
"Money disappearing through subcontractors."
Rebecca's expression changed.
"You never told Eleanor this."
"No."
"Did she discover it herself?"
"Eventually."
Ryan stared at the divorce papers.
Then at me.
"Is that why she moved everything to Claire?"
William nodded.
"Partly."
I felt suddenly exposed.
"Why me?"
"Because Eleanor trusted you."
"With what?"
"The company."
"I've never worked there."
"Exactly."
I didn't understand.
Rebecca did.
"Claire couldn't be connected to whatever was happening."
William nodded.
Ryan's voice hardened.
"So Mom used my wife as a shield."
"No."
"As a trustee."
"For your sons."
"They weren't even born."
"Eleanor knew Claire was pregnant before she died."
I remembered.
She had known for only four days.
I had sat beside her hospital bed and whispered the news.
She cried.
Then she made me promise not to tell Ryan until I got home because she wanted me to see his face.
That memory hurt.
Rebecca looked at me.
"The trust was amended forty-eight hours later."
My throat tightened.
Eleanor had been dying.
And she had spent part of her final strength protecting grandchildren she would never meet.
Ryan looked shattered.
But my sympathy had limits now.
He had still betrayed me.
Family secrets did not excuse personal choices.
Vanessa's phone buzzed again.
Everyone looked.
Another message.
MEET ME ALONE.
Then an address.
William recognized it.
His expression changed.
"That's Eleanor's old lake house."
Ryan stared.
"We sold that."
Rebecca shook her head.
"No."
Ryan looked at her.
"What?"
"Eleanor transferred it."
"To whom?"
Rebecca looked at me.
I almost laughed.
"Please don't say me."
"Not exactly."
"Then who?"
"Your sons."
I looked down at Noah and Caleb.
Ryan stared at the babies.
His entire life seemed to be rearranging itself around two children he had been willing to reduce to clauses in a divorce agreement.
William stood.
"We're going to the lake house."
"No," I said.
Everyone looked at me.
"My children are three weeks old. I'm not driving into some family mystery in the middle of the night."
William nodded immediately.
"You're right."
Ryan seemed surprised.
Maybe he expected everyone to follow his father's command.
But William wasn't commanding me.
He was listening.
"I'll go," he said.
Ryan grabbed his jacket.
"So will I."
Vanessa stood.
"I'm not going anywhere with him."
Ryan looked at her.
"You're the one receiving messages."
"And I'm done."
She walked toward the door.
I stopped her.
"Vanessa."
She turned.
I didn't like her.
I didn't trust her.
But I needed one answer.
"Did you know Ryan and I were still sleeping together?"
Her face tightened.
"Claire."
"Answer."
She looked down.
"Yes."
That hurt.
Not because I expected innocence.
Because certainty is painful.
I nodded.
"Thank you."
Ryan whispered:
"Claire..."
I looked at him.
"There is nothing you can say tonight that will make this better."
He lowered his eyes.
"Go with your father."
He hesitated.
"Then what?"
"Then you find somewhere else to sleep."
That landed.
"This is my—"
He stopped himself.
William noticed.
So did Rebecca.
I almost smiled.
Ryan walked out.
William followed.
At the doorway, he turned back.
"Lock the door."
"I will."
"And Claire?"
"Yes?"
"Don't trust any document Ryan gives you."
Ryan heard that.
His shoulders stiffened.
They left.
Vanessa remained for another moment.
Then she walked toward her car.
Rebecca stayed.
"I don't think you should be alone."
"I'm not."
I looked at my sons.
She smiled faintly.
"I meant with two newborns."
That almost made me laugh.
"My sister can come."
"Call her."
I did.
My older sister, Megan, answered on the second ring.
"Everything okay?"
"No."
One word.
That was all it took.
"I'm coming."
Twenty minutes later, she arrived carrying an overnight bag and enough anger for both of us.
Rebecca left after giving me Daniel Reeves's number.
By midnight, the babies were finally asleep upstairs.
Megan sat across from me in the kitchen.
"Say it again."
"Which part?"
"The mistress."
"Pregnant."
"The divorce papers."
"Yes."
"The dead brother."
"Apparently alive."
"The secret trust."
"Yes."
She stared at me.
"Claire, your life became a cable drama in one evening."
I laughed.
Then I cried.
Finally.
Not loudly.
I put my face in my hands and cried until my shoulders hurt.
Megan came around the table and held me.
"I loved him."
"I know."
"I had his babies three weeks ago."
"I know."
"He was with her while I was pregnant."
"I know."
That was the worst part.
Not the money.
Not the house.
Not Ethan.
Ryan had watched my body change.
He had watched me struggle to walk during the final weeks.
He had driven me to the hospital when labor started.
And somewhere inside that same life, he had been promising another woman a future.
My phone rang at 1:17 a.m.
William.
I answered immediately.
"What happened?"
His breathing sounded heavy.
"We're at the lake house."
"Is Ethan there?"
"No."
"Then who sent the messages?"
"We don't know."
I heard Ryan in the background.
Angry.
Then William said:
"Claire, someone has been living here."
I sat straighter.
"What?"
"There are recent groceries. Clothes. A laptop."
"Whose?"
"We don't know."
A noise sounded on his end.
A door.
Then Ryan shouted something.
William said:
"Stay on the phone."
I heard footsteps.
A crash.
Then silence.
"William?"
Nothing.
"William?"
Megan stood.
"What happened?"
I put the call on speaker.
Then Ryan's voice came through.
Not angry anymore.
Terrified.
"Dad."
William said something I couldn't hear.
Ryan whispered:
"No."
Then the line went dead.
I called back.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Megan grabbed her keys.
"We're calling the police."
Before I could respond, my phone vibrated.
A photograph arrived from William's number.
I opened it.
It showed a wall inside the lake house.
Dozens of photographs were pinned across it.
Ryan.
William.
Eleanor.
Vanessa.
Me.
And my newborn sons.
Some photographs were recent.
Too recent.
One showed me leaving the hospital carrying Noah while Ryan carried Caleb.
Someone had been watching us.
At the center of the wall was a photograph of Ethan.
Alive.
On it, someone had written:
RYAN WAS NEVER THE TARGET.
Below that was another photograph.
Mine.
A red circle had been drawn around my face.
And beneath it were three words.
CLAIRE HAS IT.
I stared at the message.
Megan whispered:
"Has what?"
Then the baby monitor beside us crackled.
A man's voice came through from upstairs.
"Claire."
My blood turned cold.
Megan looked toward the staircase.
May you like
The twins were upstairs.
And someone had just whispered my name from inside their room.
