Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Family

“Put the locket down.”
Richard Vale’s voice carried through the boathouse.
Evelyn did not move.
Margaret’s son, Thomas, stood in front of Richard with a gun pressed against his side.
Thomas was forty, a divorced father of two, and looked terrified but unharmed.
Richard’s men spread around the exterior.
Gabriel’s jaw tightened.
“Let him go.”
Richard laughed.
“You Morettis always mistake commands for leverage.”
Evelyn stepped beside Gabriel.
Her brothers tried to stop her.
She shook them off.
Richard’s attention moved to her.
For the first time, Evelyn saw him without the mask of father-in-law.
No warm smile.
No paternal concern.
No charity-board dignity.
Just calculation.
“You look terrible,” Richard said.
Evelyn stared at him.
“Your son had a busy evening.”
A flicker of irritation crossed Richard’s face.
Not concern for Adrian.
Annoyance.
“Adrian was always weak.”
“He learned from you.”
Richard smiled.
“There she is.”
“Who?”
“The Moretti daughter I expected to meet six years ago.”
Evelyn held up the locket.
“This is what you wanted?”
“One piece.”
“And the numbers?”
“A path.”
“To the archive?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn looked at Thomas.
“If I give it to you, you release him?”
Richard chuckled.
“No.”
“Then why should I?”
“Because if you don’t, Thomas dies first.”
Margaret’s son closed his eyes.
Richard continued.
“Then one brother. Then another.”
Nico whispered, “He has six men outside.”
Matteo murmured, “I count eight.”
Gabriel stared at Richard.
Evelyn noticed her oldest brother’s right hand near his jacket.
She caught his wrist.
“No.”
He looked at her.
“My rules.”
Richard overheard.
“Rules?”
He laughed.
“You called gangsters and gave them rules?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“I called my family.”
“Same thing.”
“No.”
Her voice was steady.
“The difference is they listened.”
Richard’s smile faded.
Evelyn continued.
“Adrian never did.”
For a moment, she felt something unexpected.
Pity.
Not for Richard.
For Adrian.
He had spent his whole life trying to become a man his father respected.
In doing so, he became exactly the kind of man Richard could discard without emotion.
Richard motioned toward the locket.
“Bring it here.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
Gabriel blocked her.
“No.”
“Trust me.”
He stared into her eyes.
Then slowly moved aside.
Evelyn walked toward Richard.
Each step aggravated the injuries beneath her gown.
She refused to show it.
Five feet.
Four.
Three.
Richard smiled.
“Your mother made the same mistake.”
Evelyn stopped.
“What mistake?”
“Thinking courage changes outcomes.”
“No.”
She held up the locket.
“Her mistake was believing someone in your family might still have a conscience.”
Richard’s eyes hardened.
Evelyn tossed the locket.
Not toward him.
Into the lake.
Richard turned instinctively.
That second was enough.
Thomas drove his elbow backward.
Gabriel moved.
Matteo moved.
Everything happened at once.
Richard’s gun fired into the ceiling.
Thomas dropped.
Gabriel tackled Richard.
Outside, Moretti security teams emerged from positions in the trees.
Richard’s men discovered they had never surrounded the boathouse.
They had been surrounded themselves.
Dante had called reinforcements before leaving the mansion.
Evelyn had not known.
She decided she was willing to forgive that particular precaution.
Within seconds, weapons were on the ground.
Nobody was shot.
Nobody died.
Richard lay against the floor with Gabriel’s knee against his shoulder.
Gabriel could have hurt him.
Evelyn knew that.
Richard knew it too.
Instead Gabriel pulled his hands behind his back and secured them.
“My sister said no revenge.”
Richard laughed against the floor.
“You think police will save you?”
“No,” Gabriel said.
“I think evidence will bury you.”
Luca ran to the dock.
The locket floated near the edge.
Evelyn had known it would.
Her mother’s necklace was attached to a hollow wooden casing.
She had noticed it in the velvet box.
Luca retrieved it with a boat hook.
Richard stared.
“You planned that?”
Evelyn opened the locket.
“No.”
She turned the photograph upside down.
“But I finally stopped assuming men like you were smarter than everyone else.”
The numbers corresponded to coordinates.
Not a bank account.
A storage facility in upstate New York.
Richard smiled when Luca decoded them.
“You still need the encryption key.”
Evelyn looked at the brass key her mother left.
Richard shook his head.
“Not that kind of key.”
For the first time, Evelyn’s confidence faltered.
Richard saw it.
“You’ll never open it.”
Police sirens became audible in the distance.
Richard’s smile remained.
“You could put me in prison tomorrow and never touch the network.”
Gabriel pulled him upright.
“What network?”
Richard looked at Evelyn.
“The one that owns half the people you think will prosecute me.”
Evelyn remembered Isabella’s recording.
Corrupt officials.
Shell companies.
Payoffs.
This was bigger than Richard.
Perhaps much bigger.
The police arrived.
Matteo had specifically contacted federal investigators he trusted rather than local officers.
Richard was arrested.
Thomas reunited with Margaret at a hospital two hours later.
Evelyn changed into clean clothes Gabriel kept at the lake house.
Sweatpants.
A sweater.
No diamonds.
No crystals.
For the first time all night, she felt like herself.
They drove north.
The storage facility looked ordinary.
Concrete walls.
Metal doors.
The coordinates led to unit 317.
The brass key opened it.
Inside stood one object.
An antique wooden chest.
Nico examined it.
“No traps.”
Dante raised an eyebrow.
“You sound disappointed.”
“I enjoy being prepared.”
Evelyn knelt beside the chest.
Inside were ledgers.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
And her mother’s old laptop.
Luca powered it using an adapter.
Password required.
Richard had been right.
They had the archive.
But it was encrypted.
“What would Mom use?” Dante asked.
“Birthday?” Nico suggested.
Gabriel shook his head.
“Too simple.”
Evelyn looked at the password hint.
FIRST COURAGE.
Where you first learned not to be afraid.
The lake.
Swimming.
Then she remembered what Isabella shouted from the dock when six-year-old Evelyn finally let go of the railing.
Not her name.
A phrase.
Evelyn typed:
ONE MORE STEP
Access granted.
Everyone exhaled.
Hundreds of folders appeared.
The Vale network was there.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Judges.
Executives.
Politicians.
Contractors.
Bankers.
And one file marked ISABELLA.
Evelyn clicked.
Medical records appeared.
Her mother’s final months.
Doctor appointments.
Medication.
Then a payment from a Vale shell company to a private nurse.
Evelyn felt sick.
The next document was an email.
Delay dosage until symptoms worsen. She cannot be allowed another six months.
Gabriel stood so quickly his chair fell backward.
Matteo caught him.
“No.”
Gabriel’s face contorted.
“He killed Mom.”
“We don’t know who wrote it.”
Luca checked metadata.
The account belonged to Richard.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Her mother had been dying.
Richard had not caused the cancer.
But he had apparently bribed someone to interfere with treatment, accelerating the decline.
Tears came.
Not like at the party.
These were different.
She did not fight them.
Gabriel crouched beside her.
“I’m sorry.”
Evelyn leaned into her brother.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then the laptop chimed.
A new file had appeared.
Not opened.
Uploaded.
Right now.
Luca stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“What?” Matteo asked.
“This archive is supposed to be offline.”
Another chime.
A video file appeared.
LIVE MESSAGE.
Gabriel moved Evelyn back.
Luca opened it carefully.
Adrian appeared on-screen.
Not from jail.
Not from police custody.
He was sitting inside a vehicle.
Evelyn stared.
“How?”
Adrian looked directly into the camera.
“Evelyn, if you found the archive, listen carefully.”
The video was live.
“I escaped because someone inside federal custody works for my father’s network.”
Gabriel grabbed his phone.
Adrian continued.
“But I’m not calling to threaten you.”
He looked terrified.
“I’m calling because my father was never the person at the top.”
Everyone froze.
Adrian leaned toward the camera.
“There’s one name your mother never put in the archive.”
A shadow moved behind him.
Adrian looked over his shoulder.
His face changed.
“No.”
The video jerked.
Someone opened his vehicle door.
Adrian shouted.
The screen went black.
Then a final message appeared.
May you like
A single name.
GABRIEL MORETTI.
