Chapter 3 - The Party Was Planned

Nobody spoke.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
Three weeks before her birthday.
Three weeks before she spilled wine on Vanessa.
Three weeks before Adrian supposedly lost control.
“Play it,” Evelyn said.
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
“Don’t.”
Gabriel blocked him.
Evelyn pressed the key herself.
The video opened.
Vanessa appeared first.
She was standing in Adrian’s office.
Not tonight.
Different clothes.
Different date.
Adrian walked into frame.
Vanessa asked, “Are you sure she’ll do it?”
Adrian poured himself a drink.
“She always tries to make peace.”
“What if she doesn’t come near me?”
“Then you go near her.”
Evelyn stopped breathing.
Vanessa continued.
“And the wine?”
“Make sure it lands on the dress.”
Matteo looked at Adrian.
Adrian stared at the floor.
On-screen Vanessa laughed nervously.
“You seriously want me to ruin a fifteen-thousand-dollar gown?”
Adrian smiled.
“It’s cheaper than forty-eight million.”
Evelyn felt Gabriel move beside her.
The video continued.
Vanessa looked uneasy.
“You said you were only going to embarrass her.”
“I’m going to make her unstable in front of witnesses.”
“How?”
Adrian leaned toward the camera without knowing it was there.
“By giving her a reason to become hysterical.”
Evelyn stopped the video.
The room was silent.
Vanessa had followed them downstairs.
She was crying now.
“I didn’t know about the whipping.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“You knew he planned to humiliate me.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he wanted me to look unstable.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I thought he was going to scream at you. Maybe throw you out.”
“And that was acceptable?”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“No.”
“But you did it.”
“Yes.”
Evelyn’s anger was strangely calm.
For months she had imagined Vanessa as the architect of her ruined marriage.
Now she saw something uglier and more complicated.
Vanessa was selfish.
Cruel.
Complicit.
But Adrian had designed the machine.
He simply recruited people willing to turn its gears.
Matteo searched the folders.
“There are more recordings.”
“Why?”
Luca studied the equipment.
“Automatic backup.”
Adrian looked toward him.
Luca smiled without humor.
“You recorded everyone, didn’t you?”
Adrian said nothing.
The arrogance of men like Adrian often created their own evidence.
They trusted nobody.
So they recorded everything.
Calls.
Meetings.
Transactions.
Secrets.
Evelyn opened another folder.
Dates stretched back years.
Gabriel put a hand over hers.
“You don’t have to watch all this tonight.”
“Yes, I do.”
“Evie.”
“He made me doubt my own memory for years.”
Her voice cracked for the first time.
“He told me things never happened when I remembered them happening. He told me I misunderstood conversations. He told me I was jealous. Emotional. Paranoid.”
She looked at the hundreds of files.
“I want to know what was real.”
Gabriel removed his hand.
“All right.”
They began.
The evidence unfolded slowly.
Adrian bribing an accountant.
Adrian discussing forged signatures.
Adrian telling a lawyer that Evelyn’s brothers could not know about her finances.
Adrian arranging meetings with Vanessa long before Evelyn suspected the affair.
Then a recording from eighteen months earlier.
Adrian sat with a man Evelyn recognized.
Richard Vale.
Adrian’s father.
Evelyn’s father-in-law had spent decades cultivating the image of an honorable patriarch.
Charity boards.
Church galas.
Hospital donations.
He had hugged Evelyn at Christmas.
Called her the daughter he never had.
On-screen Richard asked, “How long until the trust is accessible?”
Adrian replied, “If she signs willingly, immediately.”
“And if she doesn’t?”
“I’ll make the marriage unbearable.”
Richard leaned back.
“Divorce?”
“Eventually.”
“You’re taking too long.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“She loves me.”
Richard laughed.
“Then use it.”
Evelyn paused the recording.
The room seemed colder.
Gabriel spoke quietly.
“This is why you told us to make his entire family beg.”
Evelyn stared at Richard’s frozen image.
“When I said that, I meant scare them.”
“I know.”
“I don’t want anyone hurt.”
“I know that too.”
She turned to her brothers.
“No beatings. No revenge attacks. Nothing illegal.”
Dante gave her a faint look.
“Even Nico?”
Nico appeared offended.
“Why specifically me?”
Despite everything, Evelyn almost laughed.
Almost.
Gabriel nodded.
“Your rules.”
“I want them exposed.”
“They will be.”
“I want every dollar returned.”
Luca smiled.
“That part is already moving.”
“I want the people who helped him held responsible.”
Matteo nodded.
“And Adrian?”
Evelyn looked toward her husband.
He stood near the steel door.
For the first time in six years, she did not see the man she married.
She saw a defendant.
“The police.”
Adrian laughed.
Everyone looked at him.
“You think this ends with police?”
He sounded almost relieved.
“You still don’t understand what you found.”
Matteo approached him.
“Explain.”
Adrian smiled at Evelyn.
“My father was not working for me.”
Richard.
The implication settled over the room.
Gabriel asked, “Where is he?”
Adrian did not answer.
Nico checked his phone.
“Richard’s residence is empty.”
Matteo looked at him.
“Since when?”
“Security footage shows vehicles leaving ninety minutes ago.”
Evelyn’s stomach tightened.
Before the party ended.
Before her call.
Richard knew something was happening.
“How?” Evelyn asked.
Luca examined the server.
“Remote access.”
Adrian laughed again.
“My father has been watching this room.”
Gabriel looked toward the camera in the ceiling.
A tiny red light blinked.
Dante covered the lens.
Too late.
Richard knew they had found the archive.
A phone rang.
Everyone looked around.
It was not Evelyn’s.
Not Gabriel’s.
Not Adrian’s.
Vanessa slowly reached into her purse.
Her screen displayed UNKNOWN.
“Answer it,” Matteo said.
Vanessa shook her head.
“Answer.”
She did.
“Hello?”
Richard Vale’s voice came through the speaker.
“Vanessa.”
She began crying.
“Richard?”
“You disappointed me.”
“I didn’t know Adrian was going to—”
“I’m not talking about the girl.”
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
Girl.
Not daughter-in-law.
Not Evelyn.
The girl.
Richard continued.
“You were supposed to remove the drive.”
Vanessa looked at the shelves.
“What drive?”
Adrian suddenly lunged.
Dante caught him.
“Vanessa,” Richard said calmly, “look under shelf fourteen.”
Everyone turned.
Shelf fourteen stood against the rear wall.
Nico moved first.
He crouched.
Reached underneath.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He pulled out a small red flash drive.
Richard heard the movement through the call.
“Now you found it.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“What’s on it?”
Richard laughed.
“Oh, Evelyn.”
Hearing her name in his voice made her skin crawl.
“You were always the slowest person in the room.”
Gabriel took the phone.
“You have ten seconds to tell me where you are.”
“Gabriel Moretti.”
Richard sounded pleased.
“I wondered when the family dog would finally come off the leash.”
Gabriel’s face went still.
Evelyn touched his arm.
Her rules.
He remembered.
Richard continued.
“You’re all staring at Adrian because he’s easy to hate. Always has been.”
Adrian looked toward the phone.
His anger disappeared.
Something like fear replaced it.
Richard said, “But Adrian didn’t choose Evelyn.”
Evelyn frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Richard laughed softly.
“I did.”
The line disconnected.
Nico immediately began tracing the call.
Luca inserted the red flash drive into an isolated laptop.
A password prompt appeared.
Matteo looked at Adrian.
“Password.”
“I don’t know it.”
Evelyn believed him.
That frightened her.
Gabriel asked, “What did your father mean when he said he chose Evelyn?”
Adrian looked away.
Evelyn moved in front of him.
“Answer me.”
“You don’t want to know.”
“Stop deciding what I want.”
Adrian’s eyes met hers.
For the first time, shame appeared.
Not enough.
But real.
“Our first meeting wasn’t an accident.”
Evelyn remembered.
A charity auction in Boston.
Adrian bumped into her near the coat room.
He spilled champagne.
He apologized.
They talked until midnight.
“You knew who I was?”
“Yes.”
“Before that night?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Adrian looked toward the red drive.
“My father said marrying you was the only way to get close enough.”
“Close enough to what?”
Adrian hesitated.
Gabriel stepped nearer.
Evelyn lifted a hand.
No.
This was hers.
She stared at Adrian.
“What did Richard want from my family?”
Adrian swallowed.
“Something your mother hid.”
Evelyn’s heart stopped.
Their mother, Isabella Moretti, had died seven years earlier.
Six months before Evelyn met Adrian.
“What?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I swear.”
Luca looked up from the computer.
“I got into the drive.”
Everyone turned.
A single folder appeared.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
And one video.
The oldest photograph showed Evelyn’s mother standing beside Richard Vale.
They were much younger.
Maybe thirty.
On the back of the scanned image were four handwritten words.
HE KNOWS ABOUT EVELYN.
Evelyn stared at her mother’s handwriting.
Then Luca opened the video.
Isabella Moretti appeared on the screen.
Alive.
Terrified.
May you like
She looked directly into the camera.
“If my daughter ever sees this,” she whispered, “it means Richard Vale found her.”
