Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Joke

"Emma?"
Daniel heard the classroom door opening through the phone.
Emma stepped backward.
The door swung inward.
Principal Harris appeared.
Emma almost collapsed with relief.
"Are you all right?" the principal asked.
Emma nodded.
Daniel exhaled on the other end.
For the next twenty-four hours, they debated whether to go to the restaurant.
Daniel wanted police involved.
Emma wanted answers.
Eventually they compromised.
They reported everything.
Then they went together.
Michael was already waiting.
He sat at the exact table where Emma had been humiliated.
Daniel felt anger rise.
Emma squeezed his hand.
"Don't."
He nodded.
They approached.
Michael looked thinner than in the video.
Tired.
But he smiled.
"Daniel Carter."
Daniel remained standing.
"Why Emma?"
Michael glanced at her.
"Sit."
"No."
Emma pulled out a chair.
Daniel looked at her.
"I want to hear him."
They sat.
Michael folded his hands.
"You ruined everything."
Daniel almost laughed.
"You organized a public humiliation because I reported fraudulent documents three years ago."
"You took my career."
"You did that yourself."
Michael's jaw tightened.
Emma interrupted.
"Why me?"
Michael looked at her.
"Because Rebecca loves you."
Emma felt sick.
"And?"
"And Carter was predictable."
Daniel leaned forward.
"You didn't know me."
"I knew your type."
Emma watched Daniel's expression.
Michael smiled.
"Handsome. Successful. Surrounded by shallow friends. I knew exactly what you'd do when they put her in front of you."
Emma stiffened.
Daniel's voice became cold.
"Say that again."
Michael shrugged.
"I expected you to laugh."
"You expected wrong."
"Obviously."
For the first time, Michael looked genuinely irritated.
"That was the problem."
Emma stared.
"You wanted him to hurt me."
"I wanted him to reveal himself."
"No."
Emma's voice became steady.
"You wanted him to become the person you needed him to be."
Michael's smile disappeared.
"You needed Daniel to be cruel because then you could tell yourself you were right about him."
Michael said nothing.
Emma continued.
"You didn't know me either."
"I knew enough."
"No. You knew my dress size."
Daniel looked at her.
Emma didn't look away from Michael.
"You saw a picture of me and decided my humiliation was guaranteed."
Michael shifted.
"You were useful."
Daniel started to rise.
Emma touched his arm.
"No."
She turned back to Michael.
"That's what this was really about."
"What?"
"You thought everyone would see me the way you did."
Michael's expression tightened.
"As disposable."
Silence.
"And when Daniel didn't, your entire plan collapsed."
Michael leaned back.
"You think this is some fairy tale?"
"No."
Emma smiled faintly.
"I think you made one mistake."
"What?"
"You thought kindness was weakness."
Michael stared at her.
Emma stood.
"We're done."
Michael laughed.
"You came for the truth."
"I got it."
"You haven't heard everything."
She paused.
Michael reached beneath the table.
Daniel immediately stood.
But Michael only removed a folder.
He slid it across the table.
"Ask your boyfriend why his company bought my old firm last week."
Emma looked at Daniel.
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
Michael smiled.
"He didn't tell you?"
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"Your company acquired Crane & Foster."
Daniel shook his head.
"My company is negotiating several acquisitions. I'm not on that team."
Michael's smile widened.
"Convenient."
Emma looked between them.
Daniel opened the folder.
Inside were corporate documents.
His firm's name appeared everywhere.
Daniel understood what Michael was trying to do.
Create doubt.
Divide them.
Again.
Daniel closed the folder.
"You really haven't learned anything."
Michael's smile faded.
Daniel pushed it back.
"You still think Emma's waiting for a reason to believe the worst about me."
Michael glanced at her.
Emma took Daniel's hand.
"I'm not."
They walked away.
Michael called after them.
"This isn't over."
Emma stopped.
Daniel looked at her.
She turned.
"For you, maybe."
Then she left.
Outside, she started shaking.
Daniel wrapped his coat around her shoulders.
"You okay?"
"No."
"Good answer."
She laughed weakly.
"I hated every second of that."
"So did I."
"But I'm glad I went."
Daniel looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because I've spent my whole life imagining what people say about me when I'm not in the room."
She looked back through the restaurant window.
"Now I know."
Daniel waited.
"And?"
Emma smiled.
"It wasn't as powerful as I thought."
Daniel kissed her.
It was their first real kiss.
Slow.
Gentle.
When they separated, Emma stared at him.
"Historic moment?"
Daniel smiled.
"Definitely writing that one down."
She laughed.
For several weeks, life became almost normal.
Michael faced an investigation connected to the old corporate fraud.
Ryan apologized publicly.
Ben did too.
Emma accepted neither apology immediately.
Forgiveness, she decided, was not something people could demand simply because guilt had become uncomfortable.
Chloe became different.
She volunteered at Emma's literacy program.
At first Emma suspected it was guilt.
Maybe it was.
Then Chloe kept showing up.
Month after month.
One Saturday, Chloe sat beside Emma after the children left.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"Do you hate me?"
Emma considered it.
"No."
Chloe looked relieved.
"But I don't trust you yet."
The relief vanished.
Emma touched her hand.
"That doesn't mean I never will."
Chloe nodded.
"I can work with that."
Daniel and Emma continued dating.
He met Rebecca properly.
Emma met Daniel's sisters.
They adored her.
His mother asked Emma for embarrassing childhood stories about Daniel after knowing her for twenty minutes.
Daniel protested.
Nobody listened.
One evening, six months after the restaurant, Daniel and Emma returned to the same neighborhood.
Not the restaurant.
A bookstore nearby.
Emma was browsing mysteries when Daniel found her sitting on the floor between two shelves.
"You know there are chairs."
"The floor has character."
"The floor has dust."
She held up a novel.
"You've become very judgmental."
Daniel sat beside her.
She smiled.
They stayed there for almost an hour.
No cameras.
No jokes.
No audience.
Daniel realized it was one of the happiest evenings of his life.
Then his phone buzzed.
He checked it.
His smile disappeared.
Emma noticed.
"What?"
Daniel turned the screen toward her.
A news alert.
Michael Crane had been arrested.
Emma exhaled.
"For the fraud case?"
Daniel read further.
"No."
"What then?"
He scrolled.
His face changed.
Michael had been arrested after investigators discovered evidence of multiple online harassment campaigns.
Emma wasn't the first person he'd targeted.
There were others.
Several others.
Emma stared at the article.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered cautiously.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice spoke.
"Is this Emma Collins?"
"Yes."
"My name is Sarah Mitchell."
Emma looked at Daniel.
The woman continued.
"I think the same man who targeted you destroyed my sister's life."
May you like
Emma's grip tightened around the phone.
"And I found something in his files with your name on it."
