Chapter 9 - The Night Someone Broke In
Emily printed the contract.
Daniel stared at it for a long time.
“You’re thinking about going after Caleb.”
“I’m thinking about calling my attorney.”
“That isn’t what your face says.”
Daniel looked at her.
“My face has never been especially cooperative.”
She almost smiled.
They sent the contract to federal investigators already reviewing the forgery allegations.
Then Daniel did something Emily did not expect.
He went home.
No confrontation.
No threats.
No revenge.
At 2:13 a.m., their alarm sounded.
Glass shattered downstairs.
Daniel woke instantly.
Emily grabbed her phone.
Security was already responding.
A shadow crossed the hall.
Daniel moved his wheelchair between Emily and the bedroom door.
“Don’t.”
He looked back.
“Don’t what?”
“Turn yourself into a shield because you think I need one.”
A strange smile touched his face.
“Then stay beside me.”
They waited together.
Security found the intruder downstairs.
Marcus Reed.
He was bleeding from his forehead.
He had not broken in to hurt them.
Someone had been chasing him.
“I have the server,” he gasped.
“What server?”
“The archive.”
He held up a small encrypted drive.
Carter Development maintained a hidden backup of executive communications.
Marcus had discovered it years earlier.
He had finally accessed it.
The drive contained emails going back more than a decade.
One chain involved Daniel.
Robert had tried repeatedly to force Hale Urban into a joint venture.
Daniel refused.
Caleb, then working in finance for Monroe Consolidated, helped Robert arrange a pressure campaign.
But there was no order to cause the crash.
Instead, they found something else.
The truck that struck Daniel had been scheduled for maintenance that morning.
Its brakes had been reported defective.
A Carter executive ordered it returned to service anyway.
The executive was not Robert.
Not Caleb.
Emily stared at the name.
Harrison Cole.
The board director who had mocked Daniel.
Daniel read the email.
His face went blank.
“He knew.”
Emily remembered Harrison standing when Daniel revealed himself.
Not respect.
Fear.
Marcus nodded.
“Harrison was running operations.”
“Did my father know?”
“Afterward.”
Emily’s stomach turned.
“After?”
“Robert found the maintenance report. Harrison convinced him that exposing it would destroy Carter Development. So they buried it.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Seven years.
Seven years believing his crash might have been deliberately arranged.
The truth was somehow both less sinister and more disgusting.
Negligence.
Then concealment.
A preventable accident buried for money.
Emily touched his shoulder.
Daniel covered her hand with his.
Marcus said, “There’s another folder.”
It contained communications about Emily.
Her relationship with Caleb had indeed been encouraged by Robert.
But Caleb’s earliest emails showed genuine affection.
Then the tone changed.
After discovering Emily’s future shares, he began discussing marriage as “the cleanest route.”
Emily read the phrase twice.
Six years of memories rearranged themselves.
Daniel tried to close the laptop.
She stopped him.
“No.”
“You don’t need to read everything tonight.”
“I need the truth.”
They kept reading.
At 4:06 a.m., they found a message sent by Caleb three days before the failed wedding.
Once we’re married, Emily’s voting rights become manageable.
Robert replied:
Just get her through the ceremony.
Emily leaned back.
Daniel said nothing.
There was nothing to say.
At sunrise Marcus went into protective custody.
Emily and Daniel prepared for the shareholder meeting.
Before leaving, Emily opened the front door.
A package sat outside.
No courier.
No label.
Inside was a black flash drive and a note.
THE SERVER MARCUS GAVE YOU IS MISSING ONE FILE.
Daniel inserted the drive into an isolated laptop.
A video appeared.
Harrison Cole sat across from Robert Carter.
The timestamp was six years old.
Harrison said, “If Hale ever learns what happened with that truck, we’re finished.”
Robert leaned toward him.

“Then make sure Emily never learns why Hale was on that road.”
